📰 In the news
A heartwarming new arrival: UnityPoint Health introduced Siouxland’s first baby of 2026. Baby Mateo was born on January 1 and weighed 1 lb., 11 oz., as the family kept other details private — read the full story.
Keep pets legal and healthy: Sioux City Animal Adoption and Rescue Center will host vaccination clinics January 11 and February 8. 2026 licenses are available now, with late fees after March 1. By appointment only — see clinic and licensing details.
Household energy squeeze looming: A report says U.S. heating costs are expected to rise about 9% this winter as electric and natural gas prices climb, with efficiency tips and LHEAP assistance available for households — see tips and assistance options.
Compare rates for free: The national average for car insurance is around $175 per month. Paying more than that? Same, so I did some shopping around and ended up cutting my premium in half. If you haven’t checked in a while, you’re probably overpaying too — here’s the comparison tool I used.
Protect your nest egg: Savvy investors are turning to gold amidst today’s inflation, national debt, and market uncertainty for a reason. It holds its value when everything else feels shaky. Case in point: it’s up ~62% since this month last year. If you’re curious about adding it and other precious metals to your portfolio, American Hartford has a super helpful guide that covers everything you need to know. It’s free, and definitely worth a read — check it out here.

Highlights this week:

🫶 We got your back
Sustain local trails this winter: Through January 18, the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center in Iowa is accepting Christmas trees to be turned into wood chips for its trails. All decorations must be removed before drop off. Trees can be left any time during the collection window. Staff will inspect donations. See how and when to donate.
Low-key STEM magic: If cabin fever hits, LaunchPAD Children’s Museum serves up just enough science-y chaos to burn energy and spark curiosity. Think water table tinkering, Bernoulli blowers, and a make-it-yourself lab, without wrecking your living room. A tidy reset for kids, and your sanity.
Burrito craving, solved: When only a warm, hefty tortilla stuffed just right will do, La Fogata Taqueria SC keeps burritos rolling, with tacos and sopes for backup. Pickup or delivery is there when leaving the couch feels extra optional, and dinner arrives wrapped, toasty, and satisfying.
Thinning hair? Same: I’ve been shedding a lot, and recently noticed my ponytail feeling thinner. After way too much panic-Googling, I discovered Keranique’s hair regrowth system. Everything with them is surprisingly easy: no quizzes, no pills, no choosing between dozens of products. Just grab the kit and follow the instructions. The best part? It’s $75 off right now, you’ll get three free gifts, AND you’ll get your money back if you don’t love the results.

Once owned by Judge Iddings, this two story brick residence blends preserved character with practical updates. A columned porch introduces glass sidelights, chandeliers, and an open staircase. Main level includes living and dining opening to a back porch, a 2011 kitchen, a den, and a three quarter bath. Upstairs brings three bedrooms, a shared sunroom, and an updated bath. The laundry room links to a third floor family room, once a ballroom.
Added in 1975, a 2,744 square foot office wing brings reception, four offices, a conference room, two baths, and a largely finished lower level. Dual HVAC, a two car garage, and three Morningside Avenue parcels.
