📰 In the news
Aiming to match S&P 500: UNK finance students are managing a $400,000 investment fund, gaining real-world experience pitching stocks and making decisions as part of a program launched in 2014 with an initial $100,000 gift — see how the fund works.
Caring for pets and people: UNK’s pre-veterinary program helps Kearney students prepare for Nebraska and Iowa’s cooperative pathway, pairing coursework and experience with advising and Iowa State resident tuition once they advance to veterinary school — see how the program works.
Women’s voices take center stage: Mosaic of Mothers will bring music and storytelling to the University of Nebraska at Kearney on March 6. The free SALT quintet performance is the No Limits Conference keynote — get all the details.
Trace your family story: Kearney Public Library will host genealogy workshops and a roundtable for National Genealogy Day, led by genealogist Marcia Stewart. Sessions cover practical research skills, with the roundtable on March 5 — check out the full lineup.
Gold & silver are hot: Coming off gold’s best year since 1979, the momentum is carrying well into 2026 with silver remaining one of the most talked-about assets. Curious why precious metals are back in focus? American Hartford Gold has a free guide that explains what’s happening and how people are approaching it today. It’s free – and definitely worth a read.
Compare rates for free: The national average for car insurance is around $175 per month. Paying more than that? Same, so I did some shopping around and ended up cutting my premium in half. If you haven’t checked in a while, you’re probably overpaying too — here’s the comparison tool I used.
Nothing prepares you for a pet emergency: I learned that the hard way after charging $10k to a credit card for life-saving surgery on my cat, Miss Stache. As soon as we got home, I signed up for Spot. It’s super affordable – and reimburses up to 90% of the bill.

Highlights this week:

🫶 We got your back
Low-density housing taking shape: In January, Kearney City Council approved the Marlatt 4th subdivision, clearing the way for a Habitat for Humanity neighborhood east of Avenue M near East 17th Street. The plan creates 48 lots, with 45 for Habitat homes, vacates some alleys, rezones to R-1D, and adds two stormwater-detention lots. Get all the approval details.
National nod for Kearney’s arts: Kearney’s flood protection effort took a step forward. On January 22, the Central Platte NRD adopted a $52 million Elm and Turkey Creeks flood risk reduction plan. It outlines two diversion channels to move water south and lessen damage, pending future funding and design. See Kearney’s arts ranking.
Date-night upgrade, unlocked: Skip the Omaha drive and dig into Coppermill Steakhouse & Lounge, where Nebraska beef meets scratch-made sides, all sourced close to home. A confident wine and bourbon lineup rounds it out, delivering the kind of comforting, celebratory meal your Tuesday secretly deserves.
Stir, whisk, repeat: Part kitchenware haven, part from-scratch bakery, Central Mercantile Feat. Ktown Cakery invites you to browse quality cookware, bakeware, and registries while lemon bars test your resolve. A very Kearney way to make dinner, and dessert, more fun this week.
What do people see when they search your name? Search results can surface past mistakes or outdated information that no longer reflects who you are. BetterReputation helps remove and clean up unwanted content so your online presence matches your real life today. Not worried about yourself? Doesn’t hurt to mention it to family or friends who might be.
Take control of your credit card debt: High interest can keep you stuck paying more than you need to. A balance transfer card with 0% intro APR until 2027 and no annual fee gives you time to pay down what you owe without interest working against you. By transferring your balance, more of your payment goes toward the principal so you can actually make a dent in what you owe.
