Advertising terms
These terms cover every ad you book with BaseLocal, in our newsletters or on our website. We've kept them short and plain. By paying for an ad, you agree to them. We keep a note of the version you agreed to. If we change these terms later, that version still covers the ads you've already booked.
The short version
What people ask about most. The sections below give the details.
- You pay once, for the emails and days you pick. Nothing renews.
- Readers are the people signed up to get each location's newsletter, not the number who open it. Your price is set when you book, and it doesn't change.
- We write your ad, and we check every version before it runs. If we can't run it, you get all your money back.
- Change or cancel any day up to 2 days before it runs, for a full refund.
- Every ad is marked with *, so readers know it's paid.
- The chat is automated, not a live person. To reach our team, email ads@baselocal.com.
1What you're buying
In the emails you pick, and on our website. Each location gets three free emails a day: the morning newsletter, Local Daily News and the Daily Top 10. They all go to the same people. Your ad runs in the emails you pick, in each location you pick. On the same days, you're shown at the top of that location's page on our website, marked “Pinned *”. It shows 2 at a time, and the day's advertisers take turns fairly. Events go in each email's featured spot, and at the top of our events page, taking turns the same way.
We put your ad in front of readers. We can't promise how many will visit, call or buy.
2Prices and payment
$2 for every 1,000 readers, for each email your ad is in, each day it runs. Being at the top of your town's page comes with every ad. It isn't sold on its own. The smallest price is $5 a day for each email, however few people get it.
The price we show you is held for 7 days. You pay it all when you book, by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. The price you see is the whole price. We don't add fees, and it doesn't change after you pay. It shows on your statement as BASELOCAL ADS.
Taxes. If sales tax ever applies in your state, we'll show it on your order before you pay.
Each town takes at most 3 local businesses and 3 events in each email, each day. If an email is full on a day you pick, your ad still runs in your other emails and towns that day, and you don't pay for the full one. We tell you before you pay.
3Writing and checking your ad
Who writes the ad? We do, in our newsletter's voice, using what's on your website. Tell us what you'd like changed and we'll rewrite it. We check every version before it runs.
You let us use your business name and what's on your website to write and show your ad. That includes the copies of our newsletters we keep online.
We email you when your ad is approved. The earliest it can start is 3 days after you book.
If you ask for a change after your ad is approved, your current words keep running until we've checked the new version.
If we can't run your ad, we'll tell you why and suggest a better version. If it still can't run, you get all your money back.
4Changes, cancellations and refunds
Change or cancel any day up to 2 days before it runs, for a full refund.
The exact deadline is the end of the day, 2 days before. So to skip a Saturday, tell us by the end of Thursday. The day ends at midnight in that town's time. Once an email has gone out, it can't be refunded. If it went out with a mistake of ours in it, tell us through Help in your account, and our team will put it right.
If we can't run your ad, or an email doesn't go out, you get that money back automatically. Refunds go to the card you paid with. They show up in 5 to 10 business days.
5How we count readers and visits
Readers are the people signed up to get that location's free newsletter by email. It's the total number of people signed up, not the number who open it.
We count each location's readers on the day you book, and round down to the nearest hundred. We leave out email addresses that bounce, and people who pay for an ad-free newsletter.
Your price uses the number of readers we show you when you book. It stays the same for every day you picked, even as people sign up or leave.
After each email, your report says how many people it was sent to, like “Sent to 17,380 people.” That can be a little different from the number you booked. Your price stays the same.
Visits are taps on your ad that reach your website. We count one per person per email. We don't count links opened automatically by email security software.
6Your account and saved cards
Your account. There's no password and no sign-up. Your account is made when you pay. To check on your ad, tap See my ad in any email from us. Or sign in with your email, and we'll send you a Sign in button and a 6-digit code.
The main button in our emails opens your account with no password. It works for 30 days, or 10 minutes in a sign-in email. So anyone who can read your email can see your ad and receipts. Paying with your saved card, changing your sign-in email, removing your card or adding an email for receipts always needs one more check that it's you.
Saved cards. We save your card only if you check the box when you pay. Our payment company keeps it. We only ever see the last 4 numbers.
We charge a saved card only when you book or say yes to a change in your account. You can remove it any time on the Receipts page.
7What we won't run
Nothing false, and no claim we can't check, like “the best bakery in Sarasota.” Nothing against the law where the newsletter goes.
We also keep prices, deals and swearing out of the ad itself. Your address, hours and phone number go in the line under it.
When you book, you're telling us that you run the business or event in your ad, or have its permission, and that what your ad says is true.
If an ad breaks these rules, or the business closes, we may stop running it. You get back the money for any days that didn't run.
8Your chat and your information
We keep your chat so we can help you later. Our team may read it to check your ad and to make the chat better.
We use your email to send your receipts, reports and sign-in emails. Our Privacy page says what else we keep, and why.
9If something goes wrong
If we make a mistake, we'll fix it, or give back the money for the days it affected. We aren't responsible for sales you lost or other indirect losses. The most we'll ever owe you is what you paid for that ad.
If you're unhappy with us, email us first at ads@baselocal.com. We'll try to sort it out within 30 days. Michigan law applies to these terms. Either of us can use small claims court.
10Contact
While you book, ask in the chat. Once you've booked, tap Help in your account, or reply to any email from us. You'll reach the same automated chat, not a live person. It answers right away, and in your account it changes a booking only when you say yes.
Want a person? Just ask the chat, and our team will email you within 1 business day. Some things always go to our team, like a bank dispute or a business changing owners.
