Butterfly Walk

Explore the xeriscape garden around the San Pedro House on a relaxed butterfly walk, taking time to look for butterflies and other pollinators among the plants. The route remains within the garden so the distance is short, but it can be sunny and hot, so a hat and water are recommended. Expect the outing to last about an hour. Bring binoculars, and a camera if you would like to take photos. Participants meet at the front porch of the San Pedro House. The San Pedro House is about seven miles east of Sierra Vista along Highway 90 on the south side and can be found in Google Maps.

Faro Demonstrations

At Tombstone Courthouse, visitors can explore the classic Wild West card game of Faro through an interactive, educational demonstration. Volunteer dealers walk participants through the rules and gameplay while highlighting the tricks that made Faro notorious in its heyday. Participants may receive a commemorative America250 Arizona Faro chip celebrating the nation’s 250th anniversary, available while supplies last. Sessions are scheduled on Sundays, with George Howison leading on first and third Sundays and Steve Kokx on second and fourth. There is no extra charge beyond regular park entry, and real-money betting is not allowed since the program is for educational purposes only. This activity is part of Outdoors250, a celebration of America’s 250th and Arizona’s natural heritage, and participation provides an opportunity to enter Outdoors250 prize drawings by signing up. Once the dominant game of Western gambling halls for nearly a century, Faro spread with the nation’s growth and was widespread even in Washington, D.C. during the Civil War. In Tombstone, tables were common in saloons of every size, and Wyatt Earp briefly dealt Faro at the Oriental Saloon.

Parking Lot Movie - "Beasts of the Southern Wild"

An outdoor parking lot screening presents Beasts of the Southern Wild, a 2012 American magical realism drama directed by Benh Zeitlin. The story centers on a courageous six-year-old who lives in a remote bayou beyond a massive levee, using her vivid imagination to cope with life on the edge of losing her parents. When a powerful storm reshapes everything she knows, she struggles to restore stability, care for her ailing father, and keep their home above water. Set in the fictional Isle de Charles Doucet, known locally as the Bathtub, the film draws inspiration from isolated fishing communities in Louisiana’s Terrebonne Parish that face erosion, hurricanes, and rising seas, notably Isle de Jean Charles, and it was filmed in Montegut. Admission is free. Attendees are encouraged to bring a comfortable chair. Refreshments will be available for a voluntary donation. If high winds or bad weather occur, the film will be shown inside the theater. These free screenings are supported by The Arizona Commission On The Arts and the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona.

Hummingbird Banding

Volunteers are needed to help monitor and band hummingbirds, offering close-up views while contributing to a regional biodiversity study that spans the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Participants support a multi-year project by the Hummingbird Monitoring Network that investigates distribution, migration, and diversity, with findings used to guide conservation efforts. No prior experience is required, since training is provided at the start of each session. This is a scientific program that follows mandatory protocols. Four or more volunteers are needed per session, with roles such as recorder, trapper, and feeder and releaser. These roles call for skills like clear handwriting and accurate data entry, good hand–eye coordination, and confident, careful bird handling. Volunteers must be U.S. citizens to enter Fort Huachuca and be at least 18 years old, or be accompanied by an adult if under 18. Visitors are welcome to observe throughout a banding session. Monitoring typically takes place every other Saturday, beginning before sunrise and running for several hours to allow for equipment setup, trapping, and breakdown. Additional help is also needed to care for five feeders at the PAO monitoring site, which are cleaned and refilled on a regular twice-weekly schedule, and those available weekly or every other week are encouraged to get in touch. To reserve a volunteer opportunity or request the latest details, contact Birgit Johnson at kyanve@gmail.com or Laura Clawson at laura_clawson@yahoo.com. Gal in Sierra Vista with the biggest heart PIN UP CONTEST

O'Dochartaigh Peer Support Incorporated presents a vintage-themed pin-up competition alongside a community car show to raise funds for its non-clinical peer support work and its mission to prevent suicide. The organization offers eight free, peer-led programs in Cochise County that help people facing depression and emotional challenges with hands-on support, including building home hygiene and daily routines, one-on-one sit-in support, and reintegration techniques. It is founded and operated by a state-certified Peer and Recovery Support Specialist. Pin-up contestants may select a favorite Americana era from the 1930s through the 1970s. The focus is compassion, confidence, community spirit, and classic style, with an emphasis on heart, personality, and community involvement rather than appearance. Those who serve the community through care, education, safety, military service, or volunteer work are invited to share what drives them to give back. Looks must stay true to the chosen retro decade and remain family friendly, and modern styles are not allowed. The car show is open to classic vehicles up to model year 1999. Registration fees are $50 for pin-up contestants, $30 for cars, and $25 for vendors, and all proceeds benefit O'Dochartaigh Peer Support programs. Highlights include awards, raffles, vendors, music, and a welcoming community atmosphere. Businesses can support the pin-up competition with items such as grab-bag goodies, sashes, trophies, water, and similar contributions.

It also notes local history, including John and Ila Healey, residents of the meadow below Carr House from 1936 to 1972. A monthly women’s healing circle at MYCC offers an intentional space for sharing, growth, and genuine connection grounded in trust and spiritual awareness. Participants are welcomed to speak openly, be compassionately witnessed without judgment, and reconnect with inner wisdom, intuition, and feminine energy. The gathering emphasizes gentle healing of emotional and ancestral wounds through presence and care, celebrates the power, beauty, and natural cycles of womanhood, and invites a renewed relationship with the wisdom of the Earth, the Moon, and the stars. It also affirms a sense of solidarity, reminding everyone that they are not alone... women rise together. This circle meets each month, and the fee is $15.

Reiki Training Level 2 (August 22-23)

Deepen Reiki practice and expand energy work in a two-part Level 2 practitioner training designed for those who have completed Level 1. The program spans two half-day sessions that weave together teaching, conversation, and hands-on experience to build confidence and clarity. The first session introduces traditional symbols and mantras, showing how they can focus intention, support emotional and mental healing, and make distance sessions possible. It also looks at how client work can evolve at this stage, along with professional considerations and ways to strengthen intuition and energetic awareness. The second session emphasizes application. Participants receive the Level 2 attunement, practice using the symbols in partner exchanges, send Reiki across distance, and explore techniques that encourage emotional and mental balance, all with guidance and feedback to help integrate the new tools. By the end, practitioners are better prepared to use Reiki intentionally and may feel ready to begin offering sessions in a professional context. The training includes the Level 2 attunement, instruction in traditional symbols and their uses, methods for distance practice, guided practice time, course materials, and a certificate of completion. Prerequisite: completion of Reiki Level 1.
