Youth Hip-Hop Classes

Young dancers can build core fundamentals, self-confidence, and a strong sense of rhythm through structured hip-hop training in a fun, supportive setting. Classes at The Lab are offered for ages 4–7, 8–12, and teens, making space for both newcomers and those ready to advance. The cost is $17 per class, and capacity is limited.

The Sanctum Pokemon Pinball Launch Party!

A launch celebration for Stern Pinball’s Pokemon features a full day of competition and free play on all machines with a $25 entry that covers both. Giveaways and prizes include Pokemon LEGO sets, trading cards, and Stern Pinball translites, swag, and other promo items, plus payouts and custom trophies for the top three finishers. Qualifying uses Pace Matchplay. Four-player groups play a single game per round scored 7, 5, 3, 1. After seven rounds the pace target is 24 and anyone under that mark is eliminated. The target then increases by 6 points each round, so being below 30 after round eight means elimination. Rounds alternate between classic and modern games, and play continues until 16 players remain for finals. Ties on the cut line are settled with a single game of Stars. Finals are a head to head bracket, best of five, with randomly selected games that alternate between classic and modern. The event is expected to grade at about 150 percent TGP. A Stern-provided translite will be raffled at the start. Side activities include an Insider Connected high score leaderboard on Pokemon. There is also a themed twist for participants. Each player is randomly assigned a Pokemon card at sign-in that is revealed later, and before play begins everyone also chooses a Pokemon to represent them. Once selections are set, the assigned cards are revealed and become the ones to root for. If the Pokemon a player chose finishes in the top three, that participant also earns a prize. Wearing a costume adds 1 point to the starting total for Pace Matchplay qualifying.

Take part in a free foraging walk at Tyler Mill Preserve in Wallingford, CT, designed for participants with some foraging experience and a desire to learn from one another. The group will meet at the parking area near Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park, beyond the community gardens and soccer fields, gathering at the final lot. During the walk, participants can point out plants and mushrooms they recognize and share how they have used them in the past. Native plants will not be collected on this outing.

Reboot Eco hosts a monthly Repair Cafe with volunteer fixers, including Mister Fix This and Jon’s Repairs, offering help with household items and clothing so they stay in use and out of the landfill. This free community gathering emphasizes hands-on learning and sustainable habits, giving attendees a chance to understand repairs and how to keep belongings working longer. To reduce wait times, reserving a time slot in advance is encouraged, and sharing a brief description of the item helps the team prepare the right tools and expertise. While not every item can be brought back to life, every effort will be made and practical skills are often gained along the way. Simple fixes are performed during the event at no charge, with the cost of any needed parts paid by the owner. If a repair requires more time or specialized tools, a recommended next step will be provided, which may include taking the item off-site for completion and return. More complex work may involve a negotiable fee to cover labor and overhead. Typical projects include small appliances such as vacuums, blenders, lamps, and fans, as well as garments and gear with issues like rips, broken zippers, frayed edges, or torn straps. The goal is to extend the life of what you own, reduce waste, and support a culture of repair.

Live music fills the West Ballroom with a café-style acoustic duo blending soul and rock and roll. On the terrace, Blue Moon Raptors presents live birds of prey while sharing its work rehabilitating injured and orphaned raptors and explaining the vital role these species play in the ecosystem, along with practical ways to support wildlife and healthy habitats. Everyone Outside leads a hands-on nature exploration at the vernal pool on the east side of the mansion, with viewing scopes available and a chance to spot seasonal life such as frogs, salamander eggs, tadpoles, and insect larvae. Visitors can also learn about letterboxing or pick up a scavenger hunt. Representatives from Middletown’s Pollinator Pathway are on hand to discuss creating connected habitat with native plants and organic yard care, offering free seeds and an opportunity for children to plant some. The Children’s Entrepreneur Market brings youth vendors to the vista, showcasing an award-winning program that teaches entrepreneurship, innovation, and leadership through experiential learning. Throughout the afternoon, docents from the Friends of Long Hill Estate offer guided tours that share the history of the estate, and furniture donated by the Wadsworth family is displayed in the History Room. Kite flying on the vista is encouraged, and the 103 acres of parkland provide plenty of space to wander and enjoy the spring blooms.

Kath Bloom & David Shapiro, Mountain Movers at Best Video Sat., May 16

Kath Bloom and David Shapiro share the stage with Mountain Movers at Best Video Film & Cultural Center. The cover is $10. Connecticut based singer songwriter Kath Bloom is known for a wavering soprano and a blend of country, blues, and folk. She made very limited edition albums in the 70s and 80s with guitarist Loren Mazzacane Connors. After time devoted to raising a family, working with problem horses, and teaching special music programs to kids, her song Come Here appeared in Richard Linklater's film Before Sunrise, which brought renewed attention. Since then, older recordings and new material have resurfaced, including a tribute album featuring Josephine Foster, Bill Callahan, Devendra Banhart, Meg Baird, and Scout Nibblet. Since 2017 she has been recording and performing with New Haven guitarist David Shapiro. Mountain Movers, a long running New Haven band, features guitarist and vocalist Dan Greene, bassist Rick Omonte, guitarist Kryssi Battalene, and drummer Ross Menze. This lineup has played together for over a decade, first appearing on a series of singles from 2011 to 2013. Their album Death Magic arrived in 2015 on Safety Meeting, followed by a self titled release on Trouble In Mind that same year, Pink Skies in 2018, and World What World in 2020, written and recorded before the world shut down. Their ninth album, Walking After Dark, balances Greene's lyrical songwriting with the group's long form improvisations.

Fighting Carbine 1

At Blue Trail Range, this Fighting Carbine 1 course builds practical defensive carbine skills through focused live-fire training. Instruction covers stance and aiming to boost accuracy and speed in self defense situations, along with sling management, reload techniques, clearing stoppages, working from cover, and engaging multiple targets. The session begins by confirming zero, then moves directly into shooting. The curriculum centers on the defensive use of a semi-automatic, shoulder-fired long gun such as an AR-15, and other suitable platforms are welcome. Examples include MP5, AK types, Fight-Lite SCR, Mini-14 or 30, PC Carbine, Regulator, and fixed magazine rifles. Participants should bring a semi-automatic modern sporting rifle with a modern two-point tactical sling, at least five magazines or magazine loaders for fixed-mag rifles, a method to carry a spare magazine such as a belt-mounted pouch, a pistol or revolver with a spare magazine or speed loader, 500 rounds of rifle ammunition, 50 rounds of pistol ammunition, a belt-mounted strong-side holster, spare batteries for optics, gun oil or firearm lube, lunch, water, weather-appropriate clothing, a chair, and note-taking materials. The instructor can provide guidance on setting up and optimizing rifles for performance and can assist with obtaining magazines, optics, slings, and related accessories.

Spirits Alive returns with auditions for performers ready to bring Cheshire’s past to life. Those cast will portray one of eight lingering spirits tied to local history, delivering a monologue that runs 14 times each performance night at stations throughout Historic Hillside Cemetery. Actors ages 14 and up are encouraged to audition. This is a cold reading, with scripts provided on arrival. Please plan to arrive a little early to review the material, and be punctual because the schedule is tight. Expect five to seven rehearsals over the summer with flexible scheduling, plus one to three group rehearsals shortly before the event. Callbacks may be required. Farm Open Play and Market Day

A hands-on day of exploration invites children to rotate through creative stations at their own pace. Options may include water tables, a mud kitchen, painting, playdough, and sensory bins. Staff will be on hand to support animal encounters. A student-run market features Oak Hill participants selling seedlings they started and eggs they collected. These students take part in a vocational training program that develops agricultural job skills, and purchases by cash, Venmo, or PayPal help fund the program and animal care. A Talk In The Woods: Barnyard Babblers (12-24 months old)

A gentle, play-centered communication group welcomes toddlers ages 12 to 24 months to build early language in an outdoor play space. Guided by licensed speech-language pathologist Kristi Bianchini, each session blends nature, movement, and purposeful interaction to support emerging talkers. Through sensory play and farm-themed activities, children practice early sounds and gestures, begin using first words, strengthen back-and-forth interaction, and grow confidence sharing wants and needs. Caregivers learn practical strategies to encourage communication at home while little ones deepen understanding of language through real experiences. This is an active setting where children are free to move, explore, and engage at their own pace with gentle support. It is well suited for toddlers who use few or no words, are working on imitating sounds or gestures, or would benefit from a bit more help with communication. Cost is $30 per child. A caregiver is required to participate, and families complete a brief intake form so sessions can be tailored to individual needs.

Beyond Six Lakes: The Hidden History of America's Kettle Lakes and Ponds

Dr. Robert Thorson presents an exploration of the history and ecological importance of kettle lakes and ponds, the same type of ecosystem found at Johnson Pond, Servoss, and Mather and within the Six Lakes properties. The talk highlights why these distinctive waters matter to Hamden and connects them to a wider American story. Thorson, a UConn professor and author of Beyond Walden Pond on the history of America's kettle ponds, has been featured on PBS and in the Washington Post for this work. The presentation takes place in the Senior Center at Miller Library, and attendees should use the rear entrance rather than the main library entrance.

At CNTR, landscape designer Kathy Connolly explores how meadows and other naturalized plantings can echo nature’s patterns and support local ecology, while still fitting comfortably into places people use every day. The Paradox Organ Alliance brings its organ trio sound to Best Video Film & Cultural Center for a live jazz performance. The group celebrates more than seven decades of the classic Hammond organ, guitar, and drum set tradition, moving from blues and bebop to Latin grooves, funky boogaloo, and favorites from the Great American Songbook. Guest soloists are featured when possible. There is a $10 cover. Founded by Dr. Gary Grippo, Dr. Gary Novick, and John McGuire, the ensemble has worked together for several years. Dr. Grippo has been part of the Connecticut and New Haven jazz community for over 20 years. He studied music at Rutgers with Bucky Pizzarelli and Harry Leahey and has performed with Gerry Mulligan, Louie Bellson, and Clark Terry. He also hosts a weekly jazz radio show on WNHU. Dr. Novick, a recent addition to the Connecticut scene, studied with Noah Baerman and Ben Patterson and is delving deeply into the Hammond B-3 tradition. John McGuire has performed in a range of musical styles for more than 40 years, studied privately with Ed Soph, Gary Chaffee, and Joe Morello, and has played with Lew Soloff, Joe Roccisano, Archie Shepp, and Shelton Lester.

Expect a family friendly atmosphere with a community walk, chances to connect with and support local families, and plenty of activities such as food trucks, a DJ, a balloon artist, face painting, and a component featuring goats. Local advocacy partners and trusted resource organizations will be present to share information and build connections, reinforcing a shared commitment to inclusion and support. The Meriden-New Britain-Berlin YMCA hosts the sixth annual Night of Stars at Mountain Mist Day Camp, a fundraising celebration that supports the Y’s community mission through its Annual Campaign. The route moves from shaded forest paths to open meadows, offering a varied run with plenty of challenges along the way.

Matches are played on 9-foot tables in a true double-elimination format with races to 7 on both sides. This all ages show features the Southern California quartet of Stacey Dee, Linh Le, Myra Gallarza, and Alex Windsor, whose fourth album Lighten Up was released in 2025 on Fat Wreck Chords and Hopeless Records. The record explores perseverance and gratitude through personal storytelling, with songs like Strugglinh and See Me Now from Linh Le, Straight Out of Detox and Note to Self from Stacey Dee, and the long-in-the-works Dead Friends. Note to Self includes a collaboration with LA underground rapper 2Mex. Lighten Up grew out of close Sunday writing sessions and was recorded at the Compound in Long Beach with producer Antoine Arvizu along with Miguel, following earlier singles Shattered and Safe and Legal tracked there in 2023. The band then devoted intensive days to vocals with John E. Carey Jr., adding third harmonies from Gallarza. Windsor’s guitar work and music theory background helped elevate arrangements, including the end section of I4NI. The album also expands their melodic punk into new textures, touching jazz in Las Ventanas, a dub-leaning feel in Note to Self, and a reimagined version of Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros’ Johnny Appleseed.

Digging Deeper into Ecological Horticulture with Uli Lorimer

This in-person and Zoom program explores ecological horticulture, a nature-centered approach that contrasts with mainstream gardening. The session unpacks core ideas and questions familiar routines, including the importance of genetic diversity, when cultivated selections of native species may be appropriate, and how climate change should influence plant choices. The goal is practical guidance for creating and caring for gardens that function in step with the environment. Uli Lorimer leads the program. He is Director of Horticulture for the Native Plant Trust, a nonprofit focused on the native flora of the Northeastern United States, where he oversees Garden in the Woods in Framingham and Nasami Farm in Western Massachusetts, centers for native plant propagation and research. His experience includes positions at the National Arboretum and Wave Hill, and service as Curator of Native Plants at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. A lifelong student of biodiversity, he studies regional ecosystems, collects seed in the wild, and introduces new plants to curated collections. An author and speaker known throughout the horticultural community, his books include Tough Natives for Tough Places, A Native Plant Reader, and The Northeast Native Plant Primer. Expect science-based insights on choosing plants that increase the ecological impact of gardens while celebrating the beauty of native species. White Castle Slider Search - Meriden, CT

The White Castle USA Luge Slider Search brings wheeled luge to Meriden, CT, identifying promising young athletes for the national program and future Olympic teams. White Castle, the nation’s first fast food chain, is the exclusive sponsor and supports the team’s off-season recruiting tour that travels nationwide through the summer and fall. Clinics are free, and every participant receives a White Castle USA Luge Slider Search T-shirt. The program focuses on boys and girls ages 10 to 13. Each participant registers for a single clinic online, and if plans change, cancellations are requested at least 48 hours in advance so another athlete can take the spot. Arrive before the clinic begins with a parent or legal guardian. Wear long, close-fitting pants, a long-sleeve shirt, and sneakers, with shorts and a T-shirt allowed during the physical testing portion. For safety, a clinic may be canceled in the event of rain and will not be rescheduled. Founded as a grassroots effort to develop future talent, the search feeds the USA Luge Junior Development Team, with many graduates moving on to the National and Olympic Teams. Alumni include Olympic medalists Erin Hamlin and Brian Martin, as well as sliders who later represented the United States at the Winter Games, including Marcus Mueller, Ansel Haugsjaa, Chevonne Forgan, Zack DiGregorio, and Jonny Gustafson.

2026 Northern Exposure Next Level Softball Clinic

At Dunn Sports Complex, this softball clinic brings together college coaches for skill instruction, a roundtable discussion, and simulated game play led by the coaching staff. A t-shirt is included with registration. Registration is $170, with a discounted $145 rate available for players who are also registered for the Recruiting Camp. Programs expected this year include AIC, University of Hartford, University of Bridgeport, Eastern CT State University, Kutztown University, Stonehill, Fordham, St. Anselm College, University of Rutgers, Newark, and College of the Holy Cross, with more to be announced.

2026 Northern Exposure Individual Softball Recruiting Camp

Softball athletes gather at Dunn Sports Complex for an individual recruiting camp built around verified metrics and direct exposure to college coaches. Every participant completes athletic testing that captures sprint times, throwing velocity, and strength results, and all players have the chance to be seen by college programs. Rather than relying on what happens in a game, the combine format creates structured fielding opportunities so coaches can evaluate defensive plays. Portions of the showcase are filmed and compiled into a virtual presentation that is shared with more than 2,000 college softball coaches. Players also have the option to purchase a personalized mini skills video from Fastpitch Online Showcase LLC. The schedule groups athletes by position, with dedicated sessions for pitchers, catchers, infielders, and outfielders, and participants may choose multiple sessions for an additional fee to highlight a wider range of abilities. If weather becomes an issue, activities can move indoors. Enrollment is intentionally limited to keep groups small and maximize visibility. Registration is $145 for one position or $230 for two positions.

Top professional and amateur players converge at Yale Billiards in Wallingford, Connecticut for The McDermott Open, returning with $10,000 in added prize money. Hosted in one of the premier pool rooms in the Northeast, the event showcases high-level competition throughout the tournament. 2026 Northern Exposure College Coached Exposure Games - Softball

At Pragemann Park, athletes take part in softball exposure games guided by college coaches. Each matchup runs eight innings, and every participant remains in the batting lineup for the full game. Pitchers and catchers work four defensive innings. Other position players see seven to eight innings, with seven guaranteed at their primary spot and efforts made to provide time at a secondary position. Umpires will officiate, and players should wear their own team uniforms. All games are available on demand through Fastpitch Online Showcase and are shared with more than 2,000 college coaches. USA Elite will place players on teams by age and graduation year. Registration is $149 per player. No additional tournament activities are scheduled at this time, and being on a tournament team is not required. If weather becomes an issue, the site may move indoors.
