Dungeons & Dragons One-Shot

Designed for players seeking a higher-level challenge, this adult Dungeons & Dragons one-shot drops the party into Corwin’s Bay after a calamity on the mudflats. The community is torn, with influential families defending what happened and the devout calling it a curse. Bodies keep appearing along the tidal flats as if the sea itself has rejected them, and the party must uncover why. Alliances are crumbling, powerful houses are tightening control, and zealots cry heresy while urging a return to strict faith. Beneath the harbor’s rough waters, an ancient force is waking and no longer content to act through faint signs and relics. The Black Wake is underway, and this adventure pushes the party to confront it head on. Consultation with the Dungeon Master is available. This program is intended for adults, and registration is not required. For more information, email adref@dkpl.org or call (815) 756-9568 ext. 2150.

Crosstown Showdown

The second annual Crosstown Showdown brings the Sycamore vs. DeKalb rivalry to River Heights Golf Course, inviting golfers to represent their community in a friendly, competitive atmosphere. Teams of two face a mixed-format challenge. The front nine is a two-person scramble, where both players tee off, the preferred shot is chosen, and both hit from that spot until the hole is completed. The back nine switches to a two-person shamble, where both tee off, the preferred drive is selected, then each player finishes the hole with their own ball and the better of the two scores counts. Team honors are decided by combining the top 10 gross scores from each course, with the lower total earning the Crosstown Showdown Traveling Trophy for the year. If there is a tie, each course’s lowest scores in the men’s, women’s, and mixed divisions are added together to break it. If a tie remains, each course’s single lowest round goes to a scorecard playoff using hole difficulty from hardest to easiest. Partner prizes are also on the line. The top team in each division at each course receives a certificate for a twosome good for 18 holes at the opposing course, cart not included. Entry is $100 per team and covers 18 holes, a cart, and lunch.

20th Annual Let's Dance Big Band Weekend

Fans of live swing, latin, waltz, and foxtrot can look forward to a couple-friendly big band weekend featuring three bands and three themed dances. Presented by Just Make It Happen, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit recognized as a “Go To” organization by American Profile magazine for four years, the event highlights classic variety in an elegant setting. Expect ensembles ranging from 8 to 17 musicians with one or two vocalists, drawing on Chicago, Midwest, and national big band traditions. The music evokes timeless favorites such as In the Mood, Fly Me to the Moon, Take the A Train, Moon River, Sway, and Sing, Sing, Sing, celebrating more than a century of American ballroom, stage, and film music performed live with care for sound quality and the social dance floor. Held at Northern Illinois University in the Duke Ellington Ballroom, the experience centers on a smooth 13,000-square-foot wood floor and controlled acoustics. The space is fully accessible and avoids flashing lights. Dancer-friendly food is available, there is an on-site hotel with additional lodging nearby, and parking is free with convenient access from major highways. A Welcome Desk will be located at the west entrance to the ballroom, and tables for groups of ten can be arranged with paid registrations. Registration paths are available for both experienced dancers and those getting started. Intermediate and advanced participants use General Registration, while newcomers or returning dancers can choose the First Steps option, which may be completed as a couple or by two friends. First Steps includes guidance from a professional team to build confidence on the floor, asks participants to attend three lessons and two dances, recommends wearing broken-in leather-soled shoes, and is limited to 20 couples. At-the-door purchases are offered for dance-only admission without food, along with a listen-only balcony section set with 200 theater-style seats. Event listers are welcome to display brochures at the event at no charge. Additional access includes professional advice and display sales. Dance Shoes of Atlanta will be on site to assist guests with their dance shoe needs. The gathering is designed for social ballroom enjoyment and provides an easy way to meet new friends in a classically elegant atmosphere.
