Inform Encounters: Introduction to Self Defense for Teens

Painted Reed Diffuser Class with Vuur Lont Candle Co

Carrie leads a creative class at Vuur Lont Candle & Fragrance Bar where participants decorate the glass container for a reed diffuser. April Deaf Trivia at Fatty's

Deaf Trivia returns to Fatty’s Pub and Grille with a relaxed night of brain teasers and tasty fare. The evening centers on a friendly trivia competition in a lively setting where great food and good times go together.

2026 Food Truck Wednesdays

Latino Dinner

The Latino Resource Center and Campus Dining Services are partnering to host a Latino Dinner. The dinner will spotlight cuisine from Haiti, Paraguay, and Honduras. There will be food, music, and trivia.

End-of-Year Career Fair for All Majors

Current students, alumni, and community members are invited to connect with employers. Opportunities include internships, full-time positions, part-time positions, and student employment. All majors are welcome, there is no fee to attend, and reservations are not required. Attendees should bring multiple copies of their résumés. Belonging in Community: Interactions Between Identity and the Queer Community

Experience a community celebration at the NIU Convocation Center where more than 80 local businesses and organizations gather under one roof. Explore hands-on demonstrations and interactive exhibits, pick up a snack from the concessions, and take part in giveaways with chances to win prizes. The event is designed for all ages with plenty of family friendly activities. It also offers opportunities to meet local employers and learn about current job openings. LEGO Club

At DeKalb Public Library, LEGO Club offers a creative space for builders to experiment with LEGO blocks. Participants can take on the themed build or spend the time crafting their own designs. Selected creations may be showcased in the children’s department. This program is free, intended for ages 5 to 14, and does not require registration.

Teen Art Club

Student Care Package Prep and Pizza Party - DeKalb

At Barsema Alumni & Visitor Center, volunteers decorate uplifting cards and assemble care packages that will be delivered to students during spring finals. Pizza is provided while participants work alongside NIU alumni and staff. This hands-on effort centers on sharing encouragement with students during spring finals.

The Trouble with My Hair

Storyteller and solo performer Dr. Ada Cheng presents an intimate work that delves into gender, sexual, and racial identities, tracing how boundaries are formed through a changing relationship with hair and the stylists who shape it. The performance takes place at First Congregational Church. Tickets are $40, and the event serves as a fundraiser for the Legacy Wall Project. Aquatics Easter Egg Hunt & Roller Skating Night

At Kishwaukee Family YMCA, this family event combines an aquatic egg hunt in the pool with roller skating. Admission includes a designated time slot for the pool egg hunt and access to skating, along with pizza and water. A concession stand will be open for additional purchases. Skates are available to use, or you can bring your own. Admission is $5 per person for members and $13 per person for nonmembers. Advance registration is required.

Trivia 4 Troops

Paint and Sip at Shellys Gaming and Lounge

Settle in for a relaxed paint and sip at Shelly's Gaming & Lounge. In preparation for May Day and Mother's Day, participants will create a floral piece with guidance from Kristy of Buttercup Paints, with drinks served by SqUiRrEl, also known as Sarah. The cost is $35 per person and includes an 11x17 canvas and all necessary supplies. Food and snacks will be provided during the event. Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale

National Library Week Tattoos @ DeKalb Tattoo Company

DeKalb Public Library and DeKalb Tattoo Company are partnering for a National Library Week celebration featuring a one day flash tattoo event at DeKalb Tattoo Company. Explore a selection of library themed designs created and applied by local artists to celebrate books and libraries. This event is designed for adults. Prices start at $100, with exact amounts posted on the flash sheets beside each design. All forms of payment are accepted. Walk ins are welcome and will be served in the order of arrival. Drum Club Sessions 2026

Percussion sessions at The Music Connection, LLC in Sycamore, IL provide hands-on training for students. Participants receive expert guidance from staff on rudimental percussion, drum set, mallet percussion, and related techniques. Music and instruments are supplied, and attendees should bring drumsticks and earplugs. Yerkes Observatory Tour

NIU Observatory is organizing a visit to Yerkes Observatory in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Participants will travel together for a 90 minute guided tour of the historic building and its grounds, which house the world’s largest refracting telescope, then have time to explore downtown Lake Geneva before returning. Tickets are $25 per person and transportation is provided by the NIU Observatory. All minors must attend with an adult. The plan includes meeting at NIU, heading to Yerkes for the tour, some free time afterward, and a return to DeKalb.

SOLD OUT Past Times at Glidden: Dutch Tulip Barn Quilt Workshop

Create a tulip-inspired barn quilt during a hands-on session in the Past Times at Glidden series, part of America250 programming that highlights the crafts and artistry that helped shape the nation. Each participant works on a primed, pre-lined 17-inch square wooden shiplap panel while learning a short history of barn quilts, practicing painting methods, and getting help choosing a harmonious color palette. The workshop runs about three hours, and everyone departs with a finished piece ready to display. Instruction is led by Courtney Sliga. Open to both beginners and experienced painters. Cost is $75 per person. Space is limited and advance registration is required. A portion of proceeds supports museum operations.

Take Back the Night

Take Back The Night is a worldwide movement to stand against sexual violence. Join a vigil and march created to uplift and support voices of survivors. Doors open at 5:30 PM, followed by a march around the block. The vigil and survivor speak out begins at 6:00 PM, where survivors are welcome to share their story, poem, or song. This event is free and appropriate for ages 18 and older.

Grief Support Group

Adults navigating grief from any type of loss can find a safe, confidential space in a support group facilitated by Licensed Clinical Social Worker Lee Scott from Elder Care Services. The ongoing group provides time to share experiences, hear perspectives from peers and the facilitator, and learn about the grieving process. It is free to attend and no registration is required. Teacher in the Library

This free library program offers homework support in all subjects for students in grades 3 through 6. Appointments are 30 minutes and require advance registration, which can be completed at the Youth Services desk or by calling 815-756-9568 ext. 3350. A parent or guardian needs to stay in the library throughout the appointment. At the end of the session, a small preprinted note is placed on the homework so classroom teachers know the student received library assistance. Tuesday and Thursday sessions are led by Ms. Ager, a media specialist at Huntley Middle School. Totally Tabletop Tuesdays

Totally Tabletop Tuesday at Affinity for Gaming - Dekalb highlights head-to-head play with an April theme of two-players. The usual emphasis on group games shifts to one-on-one matchups, and there is still room to socialize with neighboring tables. Attendees can bring favorite two-player titles that do not often make it to game nights, and there will be options available such as 7 Wonders Duel, Patchwork, Hive, Octi, Tah-Kalar, Riftforce, Trench, Paco-Sako, Shobu, and more.

Preschool Story Time

Nellie Bly for the DeKalb Public Library

At DeKalb Public Library, a program highlights the life and work of Nellie Bly, born Elizabeth Jane Cochran, a journalist known for groundbreaking investigations that included revealing conditions at the New York City asylum on Blackwell's Island and a record-setting trip around the globe inspired by the fictional journey of Phileas Fogg in Jules Verne's novel Around the World in Eighty Days. Set inside the U.S. Embassy in Paris after the end of the Great War, Bly looks back on reporting in the United States and Mexico and on her experiences as a war correspondent while she awaits permission to return home. Nellie Bly: Around the World in 72 Days

During this presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to meet Nellie Bly in the US Embassy in Paris in February of 1919. Nellie will recount her adventures as a reporter in the US, Mexico, and as a war correspondent. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session and photo opportunities. Pop- up: American Tales, Legendary Heroes and Heroines

A pop-up storytelling program spotlights legendary figures from American history, with adult services librarian Elizabeth Hallaron sharing tales of Johnny Appleseed, Belle Starr, Annie Oakley, Wild Bill Hickock, Davy Crockett, and others. The session is intended for audiences from upper elementary age through adults, and registration is not required. Playing Cards Club

5th Annual Lancer Links Golf Outing

Community Naloxone Training

This free, adult-focused training shows how to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose. Learn the common warning signs and how to administer naloxone, also known as Narcan. The session is designed to be straightforward, offering step by step instructions on what to do until emergency professionals arrive. Participants receive a box of naloxone upon completion. The program also reviews basics of opioid use and risk factors, and points to local services that support people facing substance use. "Art in Bloom" Opportunity House Art Exhibition 2026

Blumen Gardens hosts Opportunity House’s annual spring exhibition, showcasing artwork by staff and the individuals the organization supports. Since 2012, this event has provided participants with opportunities to explore varied art forms, build confidence, and share their creations with the community. Attendees can browse a wide collection that includes painting, sculpture, photography, fiber arts, mixed media, and additional media. This year introduces Art in Bloom, where original pieces are reimagined through fresh floral design. In partnership with Willrett Floral Company, a floral arrangement inspired by client artwork will be created on site and offered through a silent auction. Turn of the Century Tea Party @ Ellwood House

Experience a tea party inspired by the turn of the twentieth century at the historic Ellwood House Museum with Dekalb Public Library. Families will start by decorating whimsical hats and crafting accessories to complete their outfits, then settle in for tea, juice, and sweet treats while playing etiquette themed games. Weather permitting, the fun moves to the lawn in the courtyard, otherwise activities continue indoors, followed by classic party games and a final stop at the Ellwood Dollhouse. Costumes and dress-up are encouraged. Seating is by order of arrival, so coming early is helpful. Registration is not required. This program is designed for families with children ages 6 to 11, and younger participants may need extra assistance with crafts and activities.

A Brother's Revival

A Brother’s Revival channels Southern rock with a concert rooted in the Allman Brothers Band tradition. The group is led by David “Rook” Goldflies, former bassist for the Allman Brothers Band, with Mike Kach on vocals and keyboards from his years with Dickey Betts & Great Southern. Eric Cohen, recently featured in an Ed Sheeran Netflix special on pedal steel, appears as well. The set features classic Allman Brothers songs such as Ramblin’ Man, Melissa, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, Southbound, Whipping Post, Blue Sky, One Way Out, Soulshine, and Revival, along with original material. With direct ties to the source, the band focuses on authenticity and that familiar sound. Goldflies also played bass on the hit Black Betty, and he performs it live. This is a show for all ages and welcomes fans of Southern rock, the blues, and American music.

Dekalb Back Alley Market -Mother's Day Weekend edition

A one-day Mother's Day weekend market fills downtown DeKalb with more than 150 vendors, food trucks, live music, and demonstrations. Shoppers can explore glass blowing, custom hats, suncatchers, dreamcatchers, woodworking, and art, with selections that range from whimsical and cheeky pieces to farmhouse, vintage, and antique finds. Admission is free, and families and well behaved pets are welcome. This event offers a distinctive shopping experience in downtown DeKalb.

ACO Regional-Sycamore, IL

An ACO Season 21 Regional cornhole tournament arrives in Sycamore, Illinois at The Regale Center, welcoming players across World Singles, Doubles, Seniors, Juniors, Coed, and a Blind Draw. The entry fee will be announced. Payouts return eighty percent after ACO fees, with awards determined by field size, first and second for groups of ten or fewer, first through third for eleven or more, and winner take all when five or fewer compete. ACO memberships are available for every level. The free Starter Membership pays full retail for tournament tickets and still qualifies players for all ACO divisions at Regionals and Majors along with standings points, prize money, and trophies. DeKalb A&S: Intro to Doublets

This introductory workshop focuses on drafting and fitting a doublet, with attention to patterning and improving fit. Admission is free. Participants are encouraged to bring muslin for pattern work, straight pins, and permanent markers for marking. If you already have a doublet, bring it to get help refining the fit, and if you have a pattern you have been using, you can bring that as well. The session takes place at DeKalb Public Library. Faith Now is an ecumenical community for young adults roughly 18 to about 40 in DeKalb County. Past Times at Glidden: Beeswax Candles Workshop

Explore 19th century beeswax candle making at the J.F. Glidden Homestead & Historical Center as part of the Past Times at Glidden series. The experience begins with a look at how candlelight influenced everyday life in early American homes, then instructor Courtney Sliga leads a hands-on session where participants craft their own set of candles. Each person creates four beeswax candles to take home. The cost is $55 per person, with a portion of proceeds supporting the Homestead’s mission. This program is part of the site’s America250 offerings, celebrating traditional trades and connecting them to the property’s history as the home of Joseph F. Glidden, who invented and first manufactured his barbed wire here in the 1870s.
