CarbonRail

CarbonRail honors the first train’s arrival in Carbondale in 1854 and also marks America’s 250th. The Historic Preservation Commission of Carbondale, the City of Carbondale, and The Varsity Center present a welcoming mix of history, film, music, theater, and dance. The program begins at the Southern Illinois Multimodal Station with a city proclamation and a brief performance by cellist Bill Cernota of the Lyric Opera of Chicago and SI Music Fest. Activities then move to the historic Varsity Center for classic silent train films, live music, an educational panel and a demonstration on the tradition of contra and barn dances, and the debut of the new play Full Steam Ahead, which tells the story of the first train arriving in Carbondale on July 4, 1854. The films on the bill are The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat by August and Louis Lumière, The Great Train Robbery by Edwin S. Porter, and The General by Buster Keaton and Clyde Bruckman. Admission to the film screenings is a nickel per viewer as a nod to the nickelodeons where such movies were once shown. The three titles run back to back in two viewing blocks, and guests may come and go during the screenings. Live entertainment at The Varsity features a clawhammer banjo set by local musician Max Senteney, the world premiere of Full Steam Ahead written by Ramsey Uhter and directed by Jim Phillips with three performances, and programming from the Southern Illinois Community Contra Dance group that includes a panel on the history of barn dances followed by a demonstration accompanied by live music from Max Senteney. The celebration also recognizes The Varsity’s 86th anniversary. Troy Thunder Baseball Tryouts (8u-10u)

Troy Thunder Baseball is holding player evaluations at O'Fallon Family Sports Park to build select teams for the Spring 2027 season. The session focuses on 8U, 9U, and 10U athletes, with eligibility based on birth dates after May 1, 2018 for 8U, after May 1, 2017 for 9U, and after May 1, 2016 for 10U. The organization operates as a 501(c)(3) dedicated to youth baseball and gives each team the freedom to set its own path. Existing teams already compete at these ages, and additional teams may be formed if there is enough interest. Coaches, parents, and players collaborate on key decisions, including fee structures and whether to play league games, tournaments, or a mix of both. New teams receive comprehensive support that includes help with evaluations and practices, guidance from experienced coaches, assistance with uniforms and scheduling, access to a pitching machine at no cost, starter baseballs and equipment, and ongoing mentorship from board members. The board includes representation from each team so every program has a voice. Most games are scheduled close to home in Troy, O'Fallon, and Edwardsville, and turf fields help reduce weather-related cancellations. The approach is family friendly for multi-sport athletes, and programs are also available for 11U and older for the 2027 season.

Body As Guide: Awakening through Feeling

A gentle, body-led immersion invites highly sensitive women into a somatic, breath, and sound journey where sensation and inner listening guide the way. The circle emphasizes shifting from constant mental effort into curiosity and presence, supporting emotional expansion, a felt sense of home in the body, and appreciation for finely tuned sensitivities shaped by life experience. Participants are encouraged to honor personal pacing and boundaries at every step, with full permission to move, rest, observe, write, or engage as feels supportive. The experience unfolds with grounding and shared intentions, followed by simple nervous system tools such as humming, grounding practices, tree imagery, physiological sighs with two short inhales and a long exhale, gentle hip rocking, and optional light touch or essential oils near vagal access points to help return to safety and awareness. A heart-centered pause with optional cacao welcomes journaling, quiet reflection, and voluntary sharing. Guided somatic movement invites exploration through gentle shaking, rebounding, breath awareness, and music, focusing on sensation rather than performance. A breathwork journey deepens connection with the body and emotions, with optional hands-on support for grounding and diaphragmatic ease, or alternatives like continued journaling, trance-like movement, or self-Reiki. Rest and integration follow through a nourishing sound journey, with options such as child’s pose, restorative shapes, soft swaying, or simply receiving in stillness, and the gathering concludes with grounding and reflection. The timing coincides with the close of the Pisces North Node and Virgo South Node chapter within Cancer season, encouraging release of overdoing, self-criticism, emotional suppression, and survival habits, while opening pathways to authenticity, feeling, expression, intuition, and heart-led embodiment. The group is intentionally small, limited to 4 to 6 participants, with a sliding scale of $111 to $144 and one supported discount available for every three tickets. Advance RSVP is required. The facilitator is Jennifer Leigh Smith, a licensed massage therapist and founder of the Holistic Journey Healing Collective, as well as a certified feminine embodiment coach, sound healing practitioner, breathwork facilitator, and Reiki instructor.
