At Simpson’s Harley-Davidson, riders can take part in a free slow-speed motorcycle skills practice designed to build confidence and control. All experience levels and all motorcycle makes and models are welcome. The focus is precise use of the clutch, throttle, and rear brake while navigating cone layouts, with exercises that can be set up to target specific challenges. The practice includes balance work and controlled low-speed maneuvers, along with elements from the Illinois DMV test such as cone weaves, right turns, and left U-turns. For newer to intermediate riders, patterns feature tighter U-turn boxes of about 18 to 22 feet in both directions, a keyhole circle starting near 30 feet across, a figure eight around 24 feet wide, a W course with lanes roughly 9 to 12 feet wide, and an intersection layout 18 to 24 feet across that strings together multiple U-turns each way. Additional cone weaves place markers about 10 to 15 feet apart in line, sometimes offset by roughly 2 to 12 feet. As skills improve, participants can try intermediate to expert police patterns or continue refining existing drills. Safety guidelines follow an MSF-style approach. A DOT helmet and over-ankle boots or shoes are required, long sleeves and gloves are preferred, riders use their own motorcycles, and a waiver is required.
