Cone killing aka slow speed motorcycle skills practice

At Simpson's Harley Davidson, this free slow speed motorcycle skills practice welcomes every rider and every make and model. The focus is on building confidence and control at crawling speeds using the clutch, throttle, and rear brake while navigating cone patterns. Coaching is tailored to individual needs, so riders can work directly on the maneuvers that give them the most trouble. Practice includes elements found in the Illinois DMV test such as a cone weave, a right hand turn, and a left hand U turn. Additional drills develop tighter U turns in both directions within roughly 18 to 22 feet, a keyhole circle starting near 30 feet wide, a figure eight around 24 feet across, a W pattern with lanes about 9 to 12 feet wide, and an intersection layout near 18 to 24 feet wide that strings together four U turns one way and four the other. Cone weaves vary with spacing typically 10 to 15 feet apart and can be offset by about 2 to 12 feet to increase difficulty. As riders progress, they can explore more advanced police style patterns or continue polishing fundamentals. Requirements are similar to an MSF safety class. A DOT helmet and over ankle boots or shoes are required, with long sleeves and gloves preferred. Participants use their own motorcycles, and a waiver is required.
