Bookish Book Club • Book Of Doors • Gareth Brown

A discussion group for readers who are especially drawn to stories about books, bookshops, and libraries. This session centers on Book Of Doors by Gareth Brown, following Cassie Andrews, a New York City bookseller whose quiet routine is upended when a cherished regular dies before her eyes, leaving behind the last book he had been reading. The mysterious volume is filled with cryptic inscriptions and drawings, and it hints that any doorway can become all doorways if one knows how to open them. Soon Cassie meets Drummond Fox, a rumpled figure with a Scottish accent who serves as a librarian guarding a rare collection of powerful books. He warns that the book now in her possession is highly sought after by those who collect such volumes. With only her roommate Izzy to confide in, Cassie must decide whether to help Drummond protect the Book of Doors and the other magical texts in his hidden library from people who would use them for harm. Drummond alone knows where that library is, and only Cassie’s book can lead them to it.

Queen of Hearts Raffle

Take part in the Queen of Hearts Raffle, a weekly drawing that supports VFW Post 3106 programs and veterans. Tickets cost $1 and are sold in the Canteen all week, and there is no limit to how many you can buy. Each ticket must include your name, phone number, and an envelope number from 1 to 54, and sales close 30 minutes before the drawing. During each drawing, one ticket is selected. The envelope number written on that ticket is taken from the sealed board and opened to reveal the card. Revealing the Queen of Hearts pays half of the total jackpot when present or 40 percent if not present. Revealing a Joker awards $50, and any other card does not pay. Opened cards remain out of play, and the jackpot increases from week to week until the Queen of Hearts is found. Players must be 18 or older. Prizes must be claimed within 30 days or they return to VFW Post 3106. Winnings of $600 or more require IRS income tax reporting and completion of Form W2-G before payment. The game uses a board of 54 sealed envelopes that contain 52 standard cards and two jokers, and it is conducted under Louisiana charitable gaming laws.

Thriller Book Club: The Caretaker • Marcus Kleiwer

This story centers on Macy Mullins, who accepts a three-day caretaking job after a run of unsuccessful interviews leaves her juggling bills and the care of her younger sister. The work places her alone in a stranger’s house in the wilds along the Oregon Coast, and unease builds quickly. What starts as an odd side gig turns into a living nightmare as signs suggest an unfathomable presence is tied to the property. Isolated and under pressure, Macy may be all that stands between a hidden threat and everyone beyond the house, while a persistent, cryptic directive urges her to follow unsettling rites.

Historical Fiction Book Club: The Calamity Club • Kathryn Stockett

The Historical Fiction Book Club dives into The Calamity Club by Kathryn Stockett, a story set in Oxford, Mississippi in 1933. The novel follows Meg Lefleur, left by her mother on Christmas Eve and now finding her way as one of the older girls at the Lafayette County Orphan Asylum. It also traces Birdie Calhoun, a single, plainspoken woman who travels to ask her well-connected sister for help, only to uncover a polished life built on deception, and Charlie, whose luck has run thin and who has few options left. When their paths converge, a bold plan takes shape to reclaim their futures, yet in a place marked by deep hypocrisy and fragile freedoms for women, even small acts of resistance can carry serious consequences. AUDITIONS - "Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike"

Auditions are being held for Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike in the lobby of the Kress Theater. The production is directed by Diane Falcone and is a Tony Award winner for Best Play. The story follows middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia, who share their late parents’ home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and spend their days clashing over unfulfilling routines. Their sister Masha, a globe-trotting movie star, arrives with her much younger boyfriend, Spike, stirring up old grudges and talk of selling the house. Also in the mix are Cassandra, the housekeeper who issues ominous forecasts that others dismiss, and Nina, a sincere and starry-eyed neighbor’s niece eager to act. A cast of six is sought, with roles for two men and four women. Vanya is a man in his fifties who has settled into a quiet life. Sonia, his adopted sister of a similar age, struggles with insecurity and regret. Masha, another sibling in her fifties, is glamorous, successful, and financially supports the household. Spike, her mid-twenties boyfriend, is an ambitious performer who soaks up attention. Nina is a lovely, enthusiastic young woman with big acting dreams. Summer Camp: Outside the Lines

AMoA’s summer art camps welcome children ages 6 to 12 from central Louisiana for a focused week of creativity. Guided by Cindy Blair, campers explore projects inspired by contemporary artists highlighted in AMoA’s 38th September Competition. Time in the galleries fuels learning about working artists and experimentation across multiple media, culminating in original pieces made by each participant. Sessions are offered over two separate weeks and are organized by age group to create a meaningful experience for every camper.
