Diversify Whitewater & Calleva River Day!

Calleva teams up with Diversify Whitewater, a nonprofit dedicated to sharing the joy of paddlesports with Black, Indigenous, and other people of color and their allies, for a celebratory river day at Riley's Lock in Poolesville, Maryland. With rafts and guides provided by Calleva, participants will paddle the Class II Seneca Breaks stretch of the Potomac River. Kayakers with Class II experience can bring their own boat or contact the River School about borrowing one. After time on the water, a shuttle and a picnic style lunch are included. Participation is free, no prior paddling experience is required, and beginners and first timers are welcome. Registration is required. The day is supported by Diversify Whitewater, a nonprofit that promotes inclusion and belonging in paddlesports, and those who wish may support the organization through its fiscal sponsor, American Whitewater. To ensure safety and comfort, the registration form includes a few personal questions for proper outfitting, and registrants will receive an email closer to the event with suggested items to bring.

Flying Buddha Kids Camp June 22-26, 2026

Flying Buddha Kids Camp offers a week of mindful movement and creative play for children. Campers explore aerial yoga, aerial arts such as lyra and aerial dance, acrobatics, and gymnastics, along with calming practices like breathwork and meditation. Outdoor time weaves mindfulness into hands-on art, including tie-dye and chalk mandalas. The program welcomes participants starting at age 6, including older children. Space is limited to 15 campers, so early registration is encouraged. The weekly fee is $450 and includes a camp T-shirt and healthy snacks. Hammock rental is not included, and hammock kits can be purchased. Payment plans are available, and details are provided at the front desk. After registering, email your child’s T-shirt size so enough shirts can be ordered for the tie-dye activity.

Practice your reading skills with Kiwi, a trained and certified therapy dog! Kiwi is bilingual and understands both English and Spanish. Read to a Dog programs provide elementary-aged children with a chance to practice reading aloud, and to build their confidence during one-on-one reading sessions with a certified therapy dog. Bring your own book or choose one from the librarys collection! You can read an English or Spanish language book. There are a limited number of available time slots. Each reader will have ten minutes to read one-on-one with Kiwi. This program takes place in Group Meeting Room 5 and is sponsored by Pet Partners. This is for grades Kindergarten to 5th Grade. Space is limited to 25 participants per age group, and advance registration is required. Participants can also enjoy special perks. Active BSS students who attend receive a beach towel, and non-BSS participants who take part and enroll in ongoing lessons on the day of the event can access a buy one, get one month offer that includes one month free.

SummerFest at Bohrer Park

SummerFest brings free, family friendly fun to the grounds of Bohrer Park as Gaithersburg celebrates Independence Day. Enjoy live music, a variety of food trucks, local breweries, and activities for all ages, all building toward a dazzling fireworks show and the SummerGlo After Party. The fireworks will illuminate the night with colorful bursts that climb up to 500 feet. The best views are in the park, and there are additional viewing options in the surrounding area. After the display, the SummerGlo After Party features live music along with LED hoop performances, juggling, and stilt walkers. Blue Crab Bolt 5K/10K Trail Running Race - Seneca Creek

Now in its 16th year, this Blue Crab Bolt trail running event brings 5K and 10K courses to Seneca Creek State Park. Inspired by the Backyard Burn races, the routes blend twisty singletrack, creek crossings, open grassy sections, and very little pavement. Participants can take on one race, two, or the full three-race series. Seneca Creek offers lake scenery, flowing streams, and miles of wooded trails, and the course links many of the park’s highlights for a spirited run through the forest.

Eye of Maelstrom

With the campout cancelled, the focus shifts to Eye of Maelstrom, a dynamic scenario built around a bridge, a river, and fortified keeps. The objective is to take and hold key positions. Capture forts with a 10-count and the bridge flag with a 5-count, then watch forts generate points over time. The central Maelstrom flag is worth 5 points and can turn the tide. Water rules are in effect, so heavy armor is not allowed, lightning counts as an area-of-effect, and lurking dangers may appear. Sorcery can open portals across the river for one player at a time. Touch and go rez is in play. Expect a spirited mix of forts, bridges, and magic swords.

Join a group to explore stories by authors of African, Caribbean, and African American heritage. This group meets to discuss "Women of the Post" by Joshunda Sanders. Summer astronomy STEM Camp in Greater Washington DC

Students in grades 3 to 8 can dive into hands-on space science designed for curious minds. Participants design and launch water rockets, study authentic meteorite slices under powerful microscopes, and create their own star maps, sundials, and celestial globes. Baby Lapsit Storytime

This storytime is for our youngest library visitors and their caregivers and is designed for children ages 0 to 18 months. These storytimes last for 20-30 minutes and include books, songs, rhymes, and bounces that are developmentally appropriate for babies from birth to walking. This is a great way to introduce your child to the joys of reading in a positive atmosphere. During the storytime, babies will sit in their caregiver’s lap, and grownups are actively involved in the program.

Read to a Dog

Elementary-aged children can practice their reading skills with Kiwi, a certified therapy dog that understands both English and Spanish. This program provides an opportunity to practice reading aloud and build confidence during a one-on-one reading session. Bring your own book or choose one from the librarys collection. Each reader will have ten minutes to read with Kiwi. This program is for grades Kindergarten to 5th Grade and takes place in Group Meeting Room 5.

Rock Creek Regional Park – Lake Needwood

2026 Rock the Heat 5k/10k

Set along the trails of Rock Creek Regional Park, this 5k and 10k features a scenic route with rolling hills that blends about one mile of paved path with roughly two miles of trail per out and back. The 5k completes the course once, and the 10k covers it twice. Runners receive chip timing, a technical drifit event shirt, and a finisher medal, with medal designs varying for this event. The race supports Medals4Mettle, and participants may bring previously earned race medals to donate. With each finisher, an old race medal is donated to Medals4Mettle, which gifts endurance medals to children and adults facing serious illnesses as a symbol of courage and resilience. Series points are awarded toward the Year-Long 5k, 10k, and Back of the Pack Series, as well as the Summer Series. A virtual option is available for those who prefer to run remotely. The Back of the Pack program is not a cutoff, it groups runners with similar paces so they can earn points alongside peers. Course support includes water stations on the 10k near miles 0.8, 2, 3.1, 3.9, and 5.1, and on the 5k near miles 0.8 and 2, with water and Gatorade available at select stops. Restrooms are located within the park. Packet pickup takes place on-site, and race day registration is offered, though shirt sizes are not guaranteed for race day registrants and prices increase that morning. Live results are available during the event with on-site QR code access, and final results with series points are posted shortly afterward. Optional runner tracking by text message is available at registration. Awards recognize the top three men and women overall, plus first and second place male and female in the following age groups, 19 and under, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and over. Overall podium finishers are not eligible for age group awards. Photos taken by event staff are shared on social media after the race. A weekly social media challenge highlights a favorite post from the previous race weekend, and the winner receives 50% off a future race. Volunteers receive their assignments on race morning. The event follows an all-weather policy, and any schedule changes or delays due to conditions are communicated by email and social media. Parking directions, course maps, shirt and medal previews, refund and transfer guidelines, and additional series details are provided through the organizer’s channels.

Friday Night Swing with the CRAIG GILDNER TRIO

Aerial Yoga Foundations

Aerial Yoga Foundations at Flying Buddha Studio welcomes beginners who want a clear and supportive introduction to practicing with the aerial hammock as a yoga prop. The session covers essential skills and safety, including key vocabulary, proper wrist wrapping, correct hammock placement, beginner-friendly inversions, and best practices to keep you secure. It also explains how the studio’s various aerial yoga class formats differ so you can choose your next step with confidence. Completing this workshop is required before enrolling in any aerial yoga class on the weekly schedule. Capacity is limited to 12 participants, so early registration is encouraged. The workshop costs $55 without a hammock rental or $65 with a rental. A new student package is available that combines this workshop with two additional aerial classes for $95, and this option does not include hammock rental. For cleanliness and safety, a hammock rental is required to cover sanitization after each use. There is also an option to purchase your own hammock. If you plan to bring a hammock that was not purchased from the studio, let the instructor know so the equipment can be checked, and only climbing grade gear is permitted. If the listed workshop times are not workable or if a private one on one or private group session is preferred, arrangements can be made.

Blue Crab Bolt 5K/10K Trail Running Race - Schaeffer Farms

Now in its 16th year, the Blue Crab Bolt Trail Running Series brings 5K and 10K trail races to the Schaeffer Farms course, with event staging at The Button Farm Living History Center. The routes balance fun with challenge and link winding singletrack, stream crossings, grassy fields, and only a small amount of pavement. Participants may choose to race in one event, combine two, or complete all three in the series. This Schaeffer Farms edition features twisty trails, open field sections, stream crossings, and several steep hills. Please note that the staging area is a private farm that is not regularly open to the public.

Blue Crab Bolt 5K/10K Trail Running Race - Little Bennett

The 16th annual Blue Crab Bolt Trail Running Series returns to Little Bennett Regional Park with 5Kish and 10Kish options on courses designed to be both fun and challenging. Runners travel along meandering singletrack, cross streams, and cover grassy sections with minimal pavement. The routes at Little Bennett include hills and ample streamside running for a rewarding trail experience. This race is one of three in the Blue Crab Bolt series, which is similar in spirit to the Backyard Burn events. Little Bennett Regional Park in Montgomery County, Maryland spans about 3,600 acres and offers more than 20 miles of trails, scenic streams, and camping. It is located off Interstate 270, approximately 30 miles west of Washington, DC.

Breaking Barriers: A BIPOC intro to Whitewater Kayaking

Calleva River School, in collaboration with the Canoe Cruisers Association of Greater Washington, D.C., is hosting a two-day introduction to whitewater kayaking created for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color ages 15 and up. Focused on reducing barriers to participation in paddlesports, the weekend features accessible, high quality instruction on the Potomac River with time on rapids to practice reading currents and controlling a kayak. The course weaves the rigorous training style of Calleva’s Zero to Hero program with a welcoming, culturally inclusive atmosphere so participants feel represented, safe, and ready to build skills, confidence, and meaningful connections.

Flying Buddha Kids Camp August 17-21, 2026

This kids camp helps children explore mindful movement through activities such as aerial yoga, aerial arts including lyra and aerial dance, acrobatics, gymnastics, and breathwork and meditation. Time outdoors blends mindfulness with creative projects like tie dye and chalk mandalas. It is open to ages 6 to 11 and older, and enrollment is limited to 15 students. The program runs for one week. Tuition is $450 for the week and includes a Flying Buddha t-shirt and healthy snacks, while hammock rental is not included and hammock kits are available for purchase. Payment plans are available through the Front Desk. After registering, families are asked to share the child’s shirt size so the correct number of shirts can be ordered for the tie-dye activity.

The event features 12,000 pound, 1,500 horsepower blown alcohol machines rolling on 66 inch tires as drivers tackle a series of competitions for points and bragging rights. Expect high energy, family friendly entertainment, with each show running about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Friday Night Swing with the ROCK-A-SONICS

Enjoy an evening of live swing dancing with The Rock-A-Sonics, delivering rockabilly, vintage country, and atomic-age rock and roll with an old-school flair. A beginner swing lesson led by Gottaswing instructors is included with admission so newcomers can pick up the basics before the social dancing begins. Admission is $20, payable at the door or by purchasing tickets in advance through BlackRock Center for the Arts. Hindi Language Classes - VHPA

VHPA’s Balvihar Hindi classes at Rocky Hill Middle School PTSA open enrollment for the 2026–27 academic year, offering a child-centered program that blends language learning with culture, heritage, and values. A dedicated team of current, former, and new teachers, academic scholars, and extracurricular specialists leads interactive sessions that include games, storytelling, conversations, hands-on workshops, art and craft, cultural presentations and performances, festival celebrations with music, activities, and food, educational temple visits and havan workshops, and an annual sports day influenced by Indian traditions. Middle and high school students can earn Student Service Learning hours throughout the year. While children are in class, parents can take part in yoga or Zumba, personal finance workshops, and other wellness and educational activities. Inspired by programs at Mangal Mandir and ISKCON, the plan also includes one family dinner each month to give caregivers a break from meal preparation. The program focuses on building strong roots in language and culture while fostering community and lasting friendships.
