Peaks Island Lions ClubCasserole + Serving Dish Workshop
Explore functional pottery with Julie Cunningham in a hands-on session focused on creating a simple oval serving or casserole dish from high-fire clay. Use slab-building techniques and helpful templates to shape your piece, practice rolling even slabs by hand, and get familiar with the studio slab roller. Design a fitted, flat, or gently domed lid and experiment with different handle styles to add both utility and character. Stamps and texture tools will be available to personalize the surface. This workshop welcomes beginners and those with prior clay experience. All clay and tools are included, and participants may bring their own tools if they prefer. Finished work will stay at the studio for bisque firing, which hardens the clay and prepares it for glazing, and can be picked up later. For an additional $10, participants may select one glaze color and studio staff will complete the glaze firing. Please bring snacks, something to drink, clothing or an apron that can get messy, and a hand towel.

Materials are provided, including a compass, protractor, rulers, pencils with erasers, practice sheets, templates, blank paper, and coloring tools such as colored pencils, markers, and crayons. Portland Unlocked is a new annual spring fundraiser benefiting Greater Portland Landmarks, set inside the historic Masonic Temple in Portland, Maine. The program features a 3D presentation of rare stereograph images from the 1800s and early 1900s, led by Maine State Museum Director Bernard Fishman. Attendees ride vintage elevators made by the same manufacturer as those on the Titanic to reach the upstairs theater, then explore Maine’s industries, cities, landscapes, and domestic life through a custom production. A limited VIP option with 50 tickets includes a 30-minute guided tour of rarely seen spaces, a private reception with Bernard Fishman in the Billiards Room with hors d’oeuvres and refreshments, and reserved premiere seating for the 3D program. A raffle offers a July 4 fireworks experience from the top of the Portland Observatory for a group of eight, with celebratory cocktails and appetizers. Attendance is not required to win.
Cove Run Tuesday
A regular Runaways Run Club group run follows Back Cove Trail, a predominantly flat loop on easy-to-navigate gravel, covering about 3.6 miles and beginning and ending at the same spot. People of any pace can take part, but there are no designated pace groups, and participants should be comfortable running 1 to 2 miles continuously. For community health and safety, those who are unwell or have Covid should not attend. By participating, runners acknowledge the inherent risks associated with running.

Port Veritas hosts a hybrid open mic at Double House Arts Collective, with KB Brookins appearing as the featured guest online. KB Brookins is a writer, educator, and cultural worker from Texas whose poetry collection Freedom House received the American Library Association Barbara Gittings Literature Award and the Texas Institute of Letters Award for Best First Book of Poetry. Their memoir Pretty earned the Lambda Literary Award in Transgender Nonfiction, the Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award, and the Dorothy Allison/Felice Picano Emerging Writer Award. Their writing has appeared in Teen Vogue, Poetry Magazine, and HuffPost, and they serve as an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at Santa Clara University. Attendees can sign up to read upon arrival at Double House Arts or through the online chat. Automatic captions are available for the virtual audience, and a transcript of the feature’s set list will be provided for those who need it. Masks are required inside the building for in person attendees, and readers may remove masks only during their turn. The venue offers a ramp at the back entrance and four low steps with railings at the front, and those who need the ramp are asked to contact the organizers in advance. Monty Python’s “Spamalot”
At Merrill Auditorium, the Broadway National Tour of the Tony Award-winning musical comedy Spamalot brings the irreverent spirit of Monty Python to the stage. A $30 fee applies for non-members who need to rent a kayak or SUP, and rentals should be reserved in advance. No advance sign up is needed if you are using your own vessel. At The Point Community Center, a community blood drive addresses a severe national shortage declared by the Red Cross, with recent donations down nearly 35 percent while hospital demand outpaces supply. The effort helps ensure blood is available for trauma patients, people receiving cancer treatment, and those undergoing surgeries in Maine. All blood types are urgently needed, and Power Red donors are especially important during shortages. Participation from South Portland and neighboring communities plays a key role in rebuilding the supply. Even one hour can contribute to lifesaving care for a neighbor, a parent, a child, or a sibling.

The Philadelphia-based artist leans on pop-forward melodies and quick-strike guitars to carry spare, clear-eyed stories, his voice reaching for innocence even as it brushes against darker corners. Beauty Land, his full-length for Dead Oceans and follow-up to a 2023 self-titled breakthrough, was recorded mostly solo straight to tape in a small Philadelphia home studio. The album moves through grief, love, and addiction with lucid detail, often in songs under three minutes, folding toy-piano sparkle and organ shadows into a warped, bittersweet twist on classic sunshine harmonies, with fragile arrangements that find rare flashes of redemption in shared voices. Scarlet Rae, born in Los Angeles and now based in New York City, brings a blend of understated acoustic elements, shoegaze haze, and breathy, effects-laced vocals shaped by years of performing that began in her teens. She fronted the indie folk trio Rose Dorn, whose debut Days You Were Leaving arrived on Bar None Records in 2019, then relocated to Brooklyn in 2020 to focus on solo work. Since then she has appeared live with bar italia, toured with Sedona, and shared stages with Fantasy Of A Broken Heart, Bloomsday, and CFCF. After signing with Bayonet Records in 2024 she released the single Bleu and developed the EP No Heavy Goodbyes from TikTok sketches and home demos, refining the songs with producer Jordan Lawlor in Los Angeles and playing most of the parts herself, drawing on influences that include Placebo. The collection pairs airy melodies with serrated distortion while tracing acceptance, solitude, and loss. Pine Point in Scarborough, Maine celebrates with an annual community parade and kids fun runs centered around the Engine 4 fire station and Hurd Park. Registration for the fun runs takes place at the fire station, with two age groups participating. Children ages 8 to 12 run from the fire station to Hurd Park, followed by a second run for ages 3 to 7 along the same route. The first finishers in each group carry American flags at the front of the parade, and every child receives a gold medal. The parade travels from Hurd Park back to Engine 4. Families decorate children, bikes, wagons, and dogs, then gather at the fire station for prizes recognizing uniquely and creatively decorated entries. Winners of the runs and the Grand Marshal are announced, and a special 250th gift is part of the celebration. Activities include an Audubon table, time to visit with and thank Veterans from the Maine Veterans Home, and a chance to admire the decorated entries. Complimentary strawberry shortcake is served inside the firehouse, with kids and Veterans served first. Donations are welcome at the shortcake tables. A rain date is planned, with any postponement updates shared on the event’s Facebook page. If the rain date must be canceled due to weather, strawberry shortcake will still be available for pickup at the fire station, and attendees are asked to bring something to carry the bowls so none goes to waste.

Drawing on ancient sources, artworks, and contemporary writing, it lifts up the revolutionary message preserved in her Gospel, a text once buried and lost for centuries. The story unfolds in seven apparitions, with Milo embodying distinct archetypes while Davis's score blends hammered dulcimer, harmonium, sand, water, and field recordings from places connected to the legends. Visual design by Monica Duncan, movement direction by Janice Orlandi, and choreography by Natalie Lomonte and Joanna Kotze broaden the experience and invite a deeper understanding of this essential narrative. Blending theater and ritual, the work offers a resonant, spiritual encounter that challenges troubled histories in search of transcendence. Summer Camp: Under the Sea Adventures!
Plunge into a seaside-themed gymnastics journey where Super Kids set out across the seafloor to find a long-lost Mermaid and Merman palace. Along the way, participants practice flips, tumbling, and balance while imagining coral reefs, sea caverns, and shimmering waves. The quest includes discovering hidden treasures and creating memories as big as the ocean. Participants must be restroom independent. Membership is not required.
Street Photography Retreat with Barbara Peacock
A three-day street photography retreat in downtown Portland, Maine led by award-winning photographer Barbara Peacock focuses on candid portraits and visual storytelling through on-the-street practice and hands-on critiques. West End Photo Headquarters serves as the home base for introductions, a street photography talk, image submissions, review sessions, and a relaxed BYOB social. Photo walks thread through city routes to local spots such as the Farmers’ Market at Deering Oaks Park and the Old Port, with opportunities to shoot throughout the day and into the evening. The plan includes optional meals and meetups, such as lunch at Honeypaw, a group lunch at Octillos or time on your own, an optional group dinner at Little Tap House, a group lunch at Ugly Duckling or time on your own, and a closing dinner option at Eventide Oyster Co., followed by lodging checkout the next day. The schedule features dedicated deadlines for submitting images, in-depth group reviews, and a final showcase highlighting the top three photographs from each participant. This is a PPA Merit Class with only six spots available. Pricing is $399 for MPPA members, $449 for PPA members, and $499 for the public.

A candlelit tribute to Fleetwood Mac takes place at St. Nicholas Episcopal Church in Scarborough, featuring a string trio performing classical arrangements of the band’s hits. Presented by Lumos, the program highlights songs like Dreams, Rhiannon, The Chain, Landslide, Go Your Own Way, Little Lies and Songbird. Seating is first come first served within tiered zones designated Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. The concert is presented in two separate sittings. It is open to guests aged eight and older. The venue is wheelchair accessible, though specific seating such as the front row cannot be guaranteed. Lumos also donates to a different charity each month.

Geared toward beginners and those with limited experience, this two-day weekend workshop builds a strong foundation in sea kayaking. It combines the material from a two-part introductory course with instruction from an introductory rescues class, and the extended format allows more time to dig into core techniques. Participants will put new skills into practice during a day paddle to an island destination. It offers a practical start for becoming a sea kayaker, a chance to experience Casco Bay from the water, and opportunities to connect with fellow paddlers.

Sip a coffee, wander the parking area, and share conversations about cars before continuing with the day. The atmosphere is easygoing and inclusive, with room for daily drivers, weekend fun cars, classics, imports, exotics, and many other styles. Admission is free and the event is open to the public, with everyone welcome. During the gathering, the club will be open for tours, membership information, and exclusive promotions.
Maine Lighthouse Coastal Cruise with NEBN
Hosted by Northeast Bronco Nation, this coastal cruise offers a relaxed drive through Southern Maine with stops at notable lighthouses and seaside landmarks. The route begins in South Portland and concludes in Kittery, with the final plan announced on the day of the event. Potential highlights include Bug Light, Portland Head Light, Kettle Cove and Dyer Cove, a sweet stop at The Holy Donut, Old Orchard Beach, Biddeford Pool, Wells Harbor, Nubble Light, and the historic forts at Foster and McClary. Expect plentiful photo opportunities, ocean views, and chances to explore on foot. A signed waiver is required to participate. GMRS radios are required for communication. Bring sun protection, sturdy shoes for walking and climbing, a full tank of fuel, and snacks for the ride. Fuel and coffee are available nearby.

Campers learn choreography inspired by both worlds, create art projects and themed crafts, and take part in music, movement, and character-based activities. The fun continues with outdoor water games, bounce houses, and open play, plus a giant inflatable movie theater showing favorite Zombies and Descendants films. Throughout the camp, participants rehearse for a live showcase, then wrap up with a glow party and a final-day performance for friends and family. No dance experience is required, and the program emphasizes confidence, creativity, and teamwork. Half day and full day options are available at $145 and $260, with financing and aftercare offered.
Women at Sea Expedition on Casco Bay
A women-focused edition of the popular Casco Bay Traverse, this three-day sea kayaking journey invites female-identifying paddlers to travel the Maine Island Trail by moving from island campsite to island campsite. Participants can develop technique and confidence with guidance from experienced instructors in an encouraging small-group setting. The itinerary weaves in conversations about the region’s human and natural history while leaving time to take in the scenery of the Maine coast alongside a close-knit group of fellow paddlers.

Experience an animal-themed gymnastics adventure where Super Kids move and create through play. Children will crawl, swing, climb, and leap through challenges inspired by creatures like puppies, guppies, chickens, and ducks, with creative games and themed crafts included each day. The activities build both body and mind while encouraging appreciation and respect for the animals in their world. Participants must be able to use the restroom without assistance. No membership is required.

RSVP is free for a chamber program featuring lutenist Timothy Burris, baroque violinist Sylvia Schwartz, and baroque cellist Raffael Scheck. The evening highlights early music specialists who couple performance with teaching and scholarship. Timothy Burris has appeared widely across Europe and the United States, often collaborating with leading figures in historical performance. His ninth and latest recording, Ciaccona, includes his own lute version of Bach’s celebrated Chaconne for solo violin. A Fulbright alum, he trained at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and earned a Ph.D. from Duke University. He taught lute at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Music in Antwerp and now serves on the faculties of the Portland Conservatory of Music and Colby College, while also tutoring French and Spanish at Waynflete School. Reviewers have praised the refinement and depth of his artistry, along with a richly nuanced sound. Raffael Scheck, originally from Freiburg im Breisgau, is the Gibson Professor of modern European history at Colby College, where he has taught since 1994. Before turning fully to academia, he studied cello for several semesters with Claude Starck at the Zurich conservatory and later focused on baroque cello. He has performed with numerous Maine-based early music ensembles, and with theorbo player Timothy Burris he co-founded ScheckMate, presenting baroque repertoire on period instruments alongside later works for modern cello and guitar. He has contributed frequently to the Portland Early Music Festival and performs with the Colby Symphony Orchestra. His baroque cello playing has been singled out for its expertise by a former New York Times music critic. Sylvia Schwartz, a Dalcrozian violinist inspired by the interplay of music, movement, and dance, is an active chamber musician in both historical and modern styles. Motivated by music’s capacity to heal and connect, she has performed in venues ranging from a vaccine clinic in Scarborough to Shostakovich Hall in St. Petersburg. Her collaborations include Guts Baroque, which she co-founded, as well as the Baroque Orchestra of Maine, Portland Bach Experience, Classical Uprising, Newton Baroque, Arcadia Players, North Star Baroque, and the Portland Symphony Orchestra. She has also appeared on the Noonday, Quietside, Bagaduce, Vigorous Tenderness, and BEMF Fringe series. She holds an M.Mus. in Violin Performance from the Longy School of Music and a B.S. in Engineering from Olin College, and she teaches at the Portland Conservatory of Music and Palaver Music Center.
