Galactic Toys & Games - AlpineRefugia | Experimental Art Installation
This experiential art installation turns attention to loss, grief, adaptation, and hope in a world that has shifted in ways not yet fully understood. In biology, a refugium is a place where life endures through difficult conditions, and that idea shapes the heart of the work. Using ceramic frogs alongside elements from the artist’s own refugia, the installation creates space to listen for signals of change and to make room for the emotions that accompany grief. The process may feel challenging and different, yet the cycles of nature suggest continuity and renewal. An open mic invites participants to share a poem, song, prayer, or wish, fostering a setting where people can sit with hard feelings together. The artist, Rine Wakeman, is a Calvin University alumnus with majors in fine arts and interdisciplinary sciences, including biology and geology. His practice engages with lasting impacts and future anxieties and encourages others to reflect as well, drawing inspiration from the planet’s vast biodiversity, the patterns of natural history, and the joy of creation.

Spend a few minutes stepping outside for light trash pickup and a bit of fresh air, whenever it fits your day. Tidy up in front of your home, along your block, or elsewhere in the neighborhood based on the time you have. Dog walkers can carry a larger bag to collect wrappers, cans, and other discarded items along the way. Families can use the outing to show kids how small actions make a difference. New residents can wave or say hello, since it is a friendly place. Those mindful of property values may appreciate that regular upkeep helps. Please bring your own supplies such as bags, gloves, or a picker stick, stay on sidewalks and the parkway between the sidewalk and curb, and use caution when crossing or approaching streets. Thanks in advance for helping HPNA keep Highland Park a great place to live.
