Full Moon Family Trivia Night
Celebrate July’s full moon with an outdoor trivia evening at Blandford, featuring general knowledge questions with a nature-inspired twist. Take part solo or form a team with family and friends. Bring a picnic or snacks along with a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy a relaxed summer night of friendly competition, with a few prizes in the mix. Admission is $10 for non-members, $8 for members with a 20 percent discount, and free for children ages 2 and under. The program is recommended for adults and children ages 6 and up. Younger children are welcome but must be registered and supervised. No alcohol is permitted on the property. Pre-registration is required due to limited capacity. Online registration closes on the day of the program, and if it sells out you can register to be added to the waitlist and will be contacted if space becomes available. The event takes place entirely outdoors, so please dress for the weather. In the case of severe weather, the program will be canceled and refund options will be provided. Cancellation requests received at least seven days in advance are eligible for a 50 percent refund, excluding the credit card processing fee. Requests made within seven days are not refundable. If Blandford cancels, participants may reschedule or receive a refund. All community programs require a minimum number of registrants, and if that minimum is not met, Blandford Nature Center will reach out with information about refund options.

The Ultraview Effect with Deana Weibel
At Schuler Books in Grand Rapids, Deana Weibel, Ph.D., presents her new book, The Ultraview Effect: What We Can Learn from Astronauts About Awe, Humility, and Exploring the Unknown. Drawing on interviews with astronauts and others in the space community, the book explores how vistas of the cosmos from space can inspire profound humility that reshapes perspectives on humanity and fuels the urge to discover. Expanding the well known overview effect into what she calls the ultraview effect, Weibel connects spacefarers’ experiences with themes of pilgrimage and reflects on insights that bridge science, cognition, and spirituality. Weibel is a professor of anthropology at Grand Valley State University who also teaches in Religious Studies. Her ethnographic research with astronauts and space professionals spans NASA centers, spaceports, and the Vatican Observatory. She chairs the Chicago/Great Lakes Chapter of The Explorers Club and co-organizes Grand Rapids’ annual Roger That! celebration of space exploration and STEM. The Ultraview Effect is published by University of California Press, May 2026.

Fulton Street Market’s midweek edition offers a calmer pace than the Saturday rush, with a wide range of farm fresh foods and locally made goods. You will also find staples like eggs, meat, milk, cheese, honey, and maple syrup, plus fresh bread, cookies, and croissants. Concessions and coffee are available, including a cup from Runyon House Roasts, and the Wednesday lineup often features new food vendors getting their start before moving into the Saturday market. Artisan Alley highlights a rotating group of makers with handmade pottery, jewelry, soaps, candles, crochet, and more. Food Truck Fridays returns for its 10th season in Grand Rapids with a family friendly weekly gathering. Each week features around 20 food trucks, an artisan village, a beer tent, and live music. Public parking is now available on the grass next to the event area, increasing accessible and handicap spaces and adding more spots close to the venue. Bicycle parking is located at the southern entrance for those who prefer to ride. The Food Truck Fridays Almanac is available at the Creston Neighborhood Association office, Community Cat Crew in Grandville, Underground Cookie Club in Kentwood, and on site, and includes weekly truck and band lineups along with other details. A free Frequent Fridays Card is available at the GR8 Food Trucks tent. Attendees can collect a stamp each week they attend and submit their cards at the end of summer for entry into prize drawings, with no purchase necessary. The beer tent returns weekly as well, partnering with nonprofits to help raise funds.

Parking is available at the farm, or at the main Nature Center with a short walk to the farm. Port-a-potties and a hand washing station are on site. This outdoor program welcomes all ages, and every registered child must be accompanied by a registered adult. Pre-registration is required because payments are not accepted at the farm. Online registration closes ahead of the program. If it sells out, online registration can still be completed to join the waitlist, and participants will be contacted if space opens. Pricing is $16 for non-members, $12.80 for members with a 20 percent discount, and free for children 0 to 24 months. Kroupa, a self-published writer whose work is released through the Chapbook Press located inside Schuler Books, presents 30 Storeys, a high-stakes tale in which Carlton Wolverton’s elevator plunge frames a cascade of memories, one for each floor, as he contemplates the stories that brought him to that moment. VanderZyden, a licensed clinical social worker with decades of experience, offers Sorrow’s Apprentice: Becoming a Student of Grief, and the Lessons on Love, Loss, and Living, a memoir that blends personal loss with professional insight to suggest that grief has lessons to teach. Build on the fundamentals from Blacksmith 101 in an intermediate forge class led by an experienced blacksmith. Registration requires successful completion of Blandford’s Blacksmith 101 within the past three years, specifically 2024, 2025, or 2026. The forge is indoors in an unheated, drafty building, so dress for the weather with long sleeves, long pants, and sturdy closed-toe footwear. Designed as a friendly way to prepare for the LMCU Bridge Run 10 Miler, the Brian Diemer Family of Races is hosting a 10-mile relay on a paved one-mile loop at Pinery Park. Teams can include 6 to 10 runners, 3 to 5 runners, or pairs, and there is also a solo option. Divisions are available for male, female, and coed teams. Every team member is required to complete at least one loop, and a coed team simply includes runners of mixed genders. Creativity is encouraged, from costumes and themes to inventive team names. At check-in, teams receive a baton with a timing chip to track laps. To keep entry fees affordable, shirts are not provided. Information about team awards will be shared, with awards presented after the final team finishes.

Parking is available at the farm or at the main Nature Center with a short walk to the barns, and there are portable restrooms plus a handwashing station on site. While children take part, adults may explore the Nature Center at no charge. Pre-registration is required, and registration closes the day before the program. If it fills, submitting the form adds a name to the waitlist and notifications are sent if space opens. Allergy and emergency details are required for all registrants. Cost is $60 for non-members, with a 20 percent member discount for a $48 rate. In the case of severe weather, the program will be canceled and participants will receive information about refund options. Cancellation requests made at least seven days in advance are eligible for a 50 percent refund of the registration cost, not including the credit card processing fee. No refunds are available within seven days, and refunds for weather are not issued unless severe conditions lead to a cancellation by Blandford.
