2026 Vertical Mile Challenge Trail Race

The 12th Annual Vertical Mile Challenge trail race takes place at Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area and features two demanding options. The signature Vertical Mile covers eight loops, totaling approximately sixteen miles, while the Half-Vertical Mile spans four loops for roughly eight miles. Both races start together at the base of the mountain on a nearly two-mile circuit. After leaving the start and finish area, runners follow a paved stretch along the rock face where drop bags are conveniently placed and some participants set up pop-up tents. The route then heads about a half mile on trail to the Stairway to Heaven Trail, a steep climb on open rock, followed by about a mile of downhill back to the steps and the start and finish line. An aid station at the start and finish provides water, sports drink, soft drinks, and a mix of salty and sweet snacks, including pickles and pickle juice. Participants are encouraged to carry a water bottle. Online registration is available for $40 for either distance, and it closes ahead of race day. There is no race-day registration. Entrants in the Vertical Mile must complete all eight loops to receive credit and an official time, and entrants in the Half-Vertical Mile may participate only in that event. Awards recognize Overall Male and Female finishers as well as Overall Alexander County Male and Female in both distances. In the eight-loop competition, additional honors are given for the Overall Fastest First Lap for Male and Female and the Alexander County Fastest First Lap for Male and Female. The Half-Vertical Mile does not include Fastest First Lap awards. Packet pickup is available on race morning at Rocky Face Mountain Recreational Area.

Glass Garden Angel Workshop

Create a one-of-a-kind garden angel using a mix of glass and glass elements under the guidance of instructor Diane Enger. The session begins with a patterned base, then you will personalize the design with your own touches. Instruction in glass cutting is included, with practice glass available, and glass enamels can be added for extra color and detail. The finished piece is approximately 4 by 10 inches and mounts on a stake that can be placed in the ground, ready to watch over a garden through the season. Space is limited. Enger brings more than 30 years of fused glass experience. She began in stained glass, transitioned to fusing, and earned a master’s degree in art. Her teaching background spans the Illinois public school system from kindergarten through junior college, including gifted classes, over 26 years. Now based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, she works as a full-time artist and fused glass instructor. Fusing involves combining glass and components, then heating them in a kiln; by adjusting time and temperature, different depths and surface effects emerge. Her work focuses on reflection and contrast, using texture and flow to express observations of the inner and outer world, with the hope of inspiring moments of contemplation. Cost is $45 for BAC members and $55 for non-members, plus a $15 materials fee paid to the instructor.

All materials are included in the $45 registration fee. This workshop is for ages 18 and up. Attendees should bring up to three prints or photos, each no larger than 5 by 7 inches. Professional prints are not required and copies are fine. Space is limited and registration is required. NoCo ARTS members receive a discount code to apply at checkout. Harvey Auditions

Auditions are being held for Mary Chase’s classic comedy about Elwood P. Dowd, a genial bachelor whose steadfast companion is Harvey, an invisible rabbit of unusual height. When Elwood cheerfully introduces Harvey to everyone he meets, his sister Veta and her daughter Myrtle Mae seek help at a sanitarium. A clerical mix-up commits Veta instead, setting off a run of misunderstandings as family and doctors try to locate Elwood and make sense of his singular friendship. The story celebrates kindness and individuality in the face of social pressure to conform. Directed by Steven Bailey and stage managed by Dalton Ryder, auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. All are welcome. Foothills practices non-traditional casting, and no prior experience is necessary. In a cold read, performers receive short selections from the play with only a few minutes to prepare, creating multiple chances to be seen and to be considered for different roles. A broad ensemble is sought, including Elwood, his status-conscious sister Veta and her marriage-focused daughter Myrtle Mae, the Dowd family maid Miss Johnson, society figure Mrs. Chauvenet, family ally Judge Omar Gaffney, caring nurse Ruth Kelly and the reserved Dr. Lyman Sanderson, the sanitarium orderly Duane Wilson, its exacting director Dr. William Chumley and his more sociable wife Betty, and the plainspoken cab driver E. J. Lofgren. Roles are open to male, female, and male or female presenting performers across a range of adult ages. Character descriptions indicate type rather than strict requirements, and casting decisions are made by the directing and artistic team.

Sacred Stone Baronial Birthday & Investiture - Ancient Embers

At Burke County Fair Grounds, the Barony of the Sacred Stone gathers to mark another year with a theme of renewal inspired by the ancient tale of a great bird that builds a fragrant nest, is consumed by fire, and rises again. The celebration honors what has been created together and includes a rare passing of the nest as new wings kindle for the first time. Event fees include on-site camping. Adult members pay $20, and children ages 6 to 17 pay $10. The feast is an additional $15. Cash and checks are accepted at the gate, and checks should be made payable to Barony of The Sacred Stone, SCA, Inc. Encampment registration is separate from SCORES. Those who plan to camp and wish to be placed in a specific Quarter or near their household should complete the Camping and RV Registration form. Travelers who register via SCORES without submitting a land petition may be placed by the Site Steward in the open fields. Site guidelines follow the Mandates of the Ancient Embers. Personal hearths and open ground fires are not allowed, and all flames are communal. The grounds are dry, so alcohol is prohibited within the fairgrounds boundary. Refund requests must be submitted in writing no later than five days after the event ends. No refunds will be issued until the event books are closed and all obligations are met, and only when doing so will not hinder fulfillment of those obligations. No refunds are available to those who have checked in at gate. Approved refunds are issued minus any processing fees. The policy will be posted on baronial event websites. Refund checks must be cashed or deposited within 90 days of the date on the check or they will be forfeited and the funds returned to the General Fund.
