Fisherman Tiki Band brings a transportive blend to Pele Utu, floating from lush tropical lounge to surf rock swagger, vintage jazz cool, and island grooves that make the room sway. The group centers on Brian “Fisherman” Lease, a standout vibraphonist, explorer of exotica, and longtime figure in the psychedelic punk underground, with Bridget “Birdie the Tiki Girl” McCracken driving the percussion and pulse. Expect shimmering vibraphone lines that glow like lantern light and jungle-tinged rhythms reverberating through bamboo, delivering midcentury exotica as it was meant to be experienced, live and loud. Seasoned by appearances from the Burlesque Hall of Fame to tiki events around the globe, the band arrives with a finely tuned soundtrack built for stylish mischief and immersive island escape.

Shelf to Shelf: Book Swap Wildflower on 7th Reno

Bring stories you have finished and find fresh ones to love at a community swap with the Swap Society at Wildflower on 7th, a women-owned cooperative and community space in Reno founded by six women that nurtures connection, creativity, and wellness. Trade gently used books in good condition that are clean, complete, and free of major damage. All genres are welcome, and participants are asked to skip items that are moldy, heavily worn, or incomplete. The swap also includes clean, gently used clothing in good shape. For easier outfit changes, consider wearing a fitted tank top or shorts underneath, which is optional. The first portion of the gathering is set aside for check-in and mingling. Swapping then continues throughout, with wrap-up beginning about a half hour before the event concludes. Arriving on time offers the best selection. A ticket allows one-for-one exchanges, while Swap Society members can use a shopping pass for unlimited swapping at all locations along with additional perks. Items left at the end may be saved for a future swap or donated to Safe Embrace or St. Vincent. Previous swaps have directed fifty nine pounds to St. Vincent, helping extend the life of garments and supporting neighbors in need. Operated by Catholic Charities of Northern Nevada, St. Vincent’s Donation Drop Off in Reno supports programs such as dining room services, a food pantry, immigration legal services, and housing benefits enrollment. With multiple drop-off sites in Reno and Sparks, all profits from donated items are reinvested into these local assistance programs.

DangerForce5

Surf and tiki energy swells beyond the breakers as DangerForce5 brings an instrumental onslaught to Pele Utu. Hailing from Sacramento and corralled by Professor Jimi Chimichanga, Esq., this supergroup trades polite beach tunes for reverb-drenched intensity that feels like brewing weather. Expect rapid-fire tremolo runs, spaghetti western suspense, and space-age oddities circling drums that pound like open-water surf against a smuggler’s hull. The sound nods to Dick Dale, The Challengers, and The Astronauts, with the interstellar mischief of Man or Astro-Man and the widescreen tension of Ennio Morricone’s film scores. One moment echoes a quiet cocktail beneath bamboo lights, then it flips into a headlong chase along the Baja coast in a speeding boat. No brakes, no lifeguards, no promises, only instrumental surf pushed past respectable volume.

Participants can create a 6x6 or 4x6 piece, choosing either a hanging suncatcher or a small tabletop artwork. A grouting demonstration is included, and grout is provided so you can finish at home or return to the studio for help with that final step. For safety during glass cutting, wear closed toe shoes and clothing suitable for crafting, since shards can be sharp and the silicone adhesive used in class is permanent. Suitable for ages 15 and up. Prices include processing fees. To avoid fees or if you prefer not to pay online, you may register in person at the studio with cash or check. Artown Closing Night: Playing for Change - Free Event

Artown wraps up at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park with a free evening centered on Playing For Change, a global music initiative built on the belief that songs can connect people across distance and culture. Sparked by travels that brought its founders face to face with remarkable street and local musicians, the project brings artists from many countries together to record and perform, celebrating diversity while highlighting what people share. The Playing For Change Foundation, launched in 2007, extends this work by providing music and arts education for children in marginalized communities around the world, with an emphasis on places with fewer resources. Through creative learning, mentorship, and cultural exchange, these programs help young people grow, honor local traditions, and strengthen their communities through the power of music.

Resin Plank

A participant favorite that concludes Artown, this hands-on Resin Plank workshop is led by studio artist Donna Smit and centers on a calm, creative approach to turning reclaimed wood planks into distinctive layered wall art. Planks are painted with acrylics in advance so they are dry and ready to work with. Participants can build their mixed media piece on an approximately 5 by 18 inch plank or choose a 12 by 12 frame for a different look. Learn to break bottles, vases, and cups to shape a custom design, then experiment with texture and layering using a wide selection of materials that can include crash glass, stained glass, plastics, and vintage jewelry. Personal baubles from home are welcome to incorporate. A clear coat of resin seals the entire piece, and each finished plank includes alligator bracket hardware so it is ready to hang. This class is suitable for ages 15 and up. Online prices reflect processing fees, and in-person registration with cash or check is available for those who prefer to avoid them. The cost is 105 dollars when paying by cash or check and 112 dollars when using a credit or debit card. All ticket purchases are final, though they may be transferred.
