CROSS ISLAND in Concert at Port Washington Public Library

At Port Washington Public Library, the chamber trio CROSS ISLAND, a collaboration of clarinetist Joseph Rutkowski, cellist Suzanne Mueller, and pianist Elinor Abrams Zayas, offers a program that connects eras, styles, and cultures. The performance begins with Mendelssohn’s Song Without Words, Op. 38, No. 2 in C minor, followed by the Allegro from Mozart’s Kegelstatt Trio with the cello taking the original viola line. Burt Bacharach’s Anyone Who Had a Heart appears in a custom arrangement by Mark McCarron, introduced by a brief Bacharach Name That Tune led by Joe. Ellie and Joe then share two Gerald Finzi bagatelles, the lyrical Forlana and the lively Fughetta. Suzanne and Joe continue with Morton Gould’s Calypso Serenade, Benny’s Gig No. 6, and David Burndrett’s Blues Duet. Suzanne and Ellie join for First Ride by Eugene Friesen and Paul Hally, balancing serenity and exuberance. The trio reunites for Max Bruch’s Nachtgesang, a nocturne featuring the cello in the role originally written for viola in a transcription by the composer, then Suzanne and Ellie offer the Largo and Menuetto Allegro from Boccherini’s Sonata No. 2 in G major. The program also features Cole Porter’s So in Love in an arrangement created for CROSS ISLAND by Josh Redman and concludes with Mischievous Spirits, Masks No. 2 by Venezuelan composer Elisenda Fabregas.
