The NeonWoodland Historic Tour
Explore Woodland, established in 1841 and counted among the oldest rural cemeteries in the United States. This guided walk visits the graves of the Wright Brothers, Paul Laurence Dunbar, Erma Bombeck, James Ritty, the Stanley family, the Mead family, George Newcom, and many other renowned and notorious Daytonians. Meet at Eichelberger Plaza by the cemetery’s main gates. Parking is available inside and outside the gates. Comfortable walking shoes are encouraged, and a water bottle is recommended. Tours proceed in rain or shine, pausing only for thunder or lightning. Reservations are required, with a suggested $5 donation. Contributions support the Woodland Arboretum Foundation and its restoration, preservation, horticultural, and educational efforts that help keep Woodland a cultural resource for Dayton and Ohio.

Practice runs take place on private property and are open to both members and non-members in good standing with Gem City Dog Obedience Club and Gem City Rat Rompers. Please arrive no more than fifteen minutes before the listed start time. Volunteer dogs receive priority and may be run before, after, or in between non-volunteer dogs, and the running order follows the order in which you sign up. The cost is $5 per run with a maximum of two runs per dog. Cash or check is strongly preferred, and PayPal is accepted. Each session is limited to 18 dogs, and each run allows up to 4 minutes of ring time. If you are attending for the first time, leave your dog in the car, come inside to sign up, let them know you are new, bring plenty of treats, and bring belly bands if needed. The LandFree Dance & Tumbling Trial Week!
Kids ages 3 and up can sample free dance and tumbling classes during a trial week at Stags. The studio offers a welcoming way to try different styles and find a good fit without commitment or pressure. Options include toddler-friendly dance, ballet, tap, hip hop, and tumbling, along with combination classes that blend ballet with tumbling or tap. The schedule features Tiny Tumblers and Mini Movers for ages 3 to 4, Combo Ballet and Tumbling for ages 4 to 5 and 6 to 8, a Back Handspring class for ages 6 to 14, Acro Tumbling for ages 6 and up, Tumbling Level 1/2, Combo Ballet and Tap for ages 4 to 6, and Hip Hop for ages 5 and up. A six week summer skills and strength blitz is also listed. Spots are limited.
Gem City Pinball League - Season 17
Gem City Pinball League returns for Season 17 at Canal Street Arcade and Deli. A $20 per session fee applies, with coin drop each week. Participants are placed in groups of three or four to play four randomly selected machines, earning points based on placement. The season features eight weeks of regular play followed by two finals nights, and each player competes in one final determined by overall standings. A cutoff separates A and B finals, and formats may be adjusted according to league needs and the number of players. Consistent attendance is important. There are no makeup weeks, but the lowest scoring week is dropped at the end of the season. Players are asked to check in each week to confirm whether they will be present. Missing three weeks results in removal from season rankings and ineligibility for that season’s finals, though special circumstances may be considered at the discretion of league operators if communicated promptly with valid reasons. If removed, players may continue to participate for the rest of the season without their scores being recorded, and they can register again at the start of the next season if space allows. A respectful environment is required. Disrespectful conduct or arguing with league officials over rulings can lead to disqualification or removal. Mechanical issues are part of pinball, and related rulings, including potential restarts or game shutdowns, are handled by league directors.

Build a foundation in archery with a five-week training program that meets once a week for a one-hour session. All equipment is provided, and outside gear is not permitted. Participants must be 8 years of age or older and able to take part safely. Attendance during the first week is required or the registration will be cancelled. There are no refunds if scheduled appointments are missed, so please plan accordingly. After registration, expect an email within one week of the scheduled start date with instructions and a request for additional information. Coaches will do their best to accommodate schedule changes, although placement in a different day’s session is not guaranteed. An introductory archery component is included as part of the package.

Recovery Dharma: Inquiry Meeting
A Recovery Dharma inquiry meeting rooted in Buddhist principles offers a supportive, peer-led space to work toward freedom from the suffering of addiction. Participants engage with inquiry questions that blend recovery wisdom with the Four Noble Truths, the Noble Eightfold Path, and the Five Precepts. The gathering includes time for individual reflection through journaling and meditation, followed by conversation as a group. It recognizes that addiction can show up in many ways, including substances, food, compulsive scrolling, codependency, overspending, and more. The emphasis is on empowerment, mutual support, and discovering personal insight along an individual path. All are welcome. This is a donation-based meeting, and preregistration is not required. Parking is in designated guest areas only, and the main courtyard is reserved for those with accessibility needs and building tenants. Unauthorized parking in the courtyard may result in towing. Other local Recovery Dharma meetings are also offered at The Quaker House.
Light-Up Moon Workshop

Woodland Cemetery, members of the Dunbar Alumni Association, and Dayton Dunbareans gather to honor poet Paul Laurence Dunbar with an annual graveside tribute. The commemoration recognizes Dunbar’s legacy as the first African American poet to gain national recognition, a Dayton native whose brief life produced work that reached audiences across the country and around the world. The tradition began with an early memorial led by the President of Wilberforce University alongside the university choir, and it later became a yearly observance after a small group of admirers met at his gravesite to pay their respects. Support has continued through the Dayton Dunbar Alumni Association, the National Park Service, Woodland Cemetery and Arboretum, and community volunteers, with ongoing leadership from Dunbar scholar LaVerne Sci, a former manager of the Dunbar House. The tribute starts at the gravesite with a wreath-laying, then moves into the Woodland Mausoleum for a brief program of readings and stories shared by devoted friends of Dunbar. A processional from the Mausoleum entrance to the gravesite is included. Admission is free and open to the public, and attendees are welcome at both the graveside and Mausoleum portions of the program.

Presented by The Charity’s Children Project in partnership with Woodland Historic Cemetery and Arboretum, this gathering celebrates the dedication of Higgins Garden and the installation of a National Votes for Women Trail historic marker honoring Jewelia Galloway Higgins, made possible through funding from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation. Born in Dayton, Ohio, Higgins drew strength from a family legacy connected to early Black settlement and the Underground Railroad, and she became a suffragist, humanitarian, and community organizer. Recognized as one of the first Black Red Cross nurses in Dayton, she helped advance voting rights during a period of intense racial and gender discrimination. Through leadership in the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs and the Women’s Christian Association, known as the Colored YWCA, she created pathways for Black women and families. Together with her husband, Rev. Charles D. Higgins, a childhood friend of Paul Laurence Dunbar, she helped build institutions that supported faith, education, and social justice in Dayton’s Black community. Guests are welcomed into the Tiffany Chapel area to explore a pictorial exhibit before the formal program. The program begins with opening remarks, then continues with a guided walk sharing stories of notable individuals and historic sites. The tour ends at Higgins Garden for a brief dedication and the unveiling of the marker. The gathering concludes back at the Tiffany Chapel area with time for conversation, refreshments, and food truck service by D’Lish Catering.

This first session in a two-part, in-person series introduces the core practice of the shamanic spirit journey. Shamanism is presented as a practice that complements, rather than replaces, existing spiritual paths and is open to people from all backgrounds. Through guided journeys and gentle trance states, participants learn to focus inward and engage directly with personal spirit allies and helpers, blending the intention of prayer with the receptive focus of meditation. Instruction covers foundational skills such as grounding, centering, and shielding, along with ally retrieval, individual and group journeys, walking journeys, and dreamtime explorations. Practical integration into daily life is emphasized. By the end of the course, participants aim to understand the purpose of journeying, enter and conclude journeys with confidence, use rhythmic sound to support the work, connect with at least one spirit ally, retrieve an ally and healing insights for themselves or another, explore the layers of the shamanic landscape, and gain perspective on the history and anthropology of this practice across cultures. Benefits can include a direct relationship with allies, tools for personal healing and guidance, expanded spiritual awareness, clearer boundaries, and added depth to existing practices. Journeying is offered as support for the mind, body, and spirit and does not replace science-based or other healing modalities. The series includes two in-person learning and practice sessions, a recorded informational video, and a small amount of homework between meetings to help integrate the skills. Instruction is led by Michelle Sampson, who has practiced journeying since 1998, completed advanced study with Bekki and Crow at Dragonwaters in 2000, and finished teacher certification training with Bekki in 2019. Her learning has also been shaped by teachers including the late Miss Beatrice Waight, Wendell Humphrey, Sarangarel, and Ramón López. Experience in theatre design and technology and in both elementary and post-secondary education informs her teaching approach. With roots in a Midwestern blue collar upbringing and ancestry that includes Welsh, Irish, Orcadian, and Hebridean lineages, she practices core shamanism and works within those cosmologies as well as those of the individuals she serves.

ORRRC Wingman 10k
Presented by the Ohio River Road Runners Club, an all‑volunteer 501(c)(3) Ohio nonprofit that supports the running community in and around Dayton, this 10K welcomes runners and walkers of all abilities on a flat, paved course along the Creekside Trail at EJ Nutter Park in Beavercreek. Expect a friendly atmosphere powered by volunteer support, a well thought out route, chip timing, and post‑race refreshments. As one of the club’s small races, members participate at no cost, ages 14 and under are free, military personnel and veterans with appropriate ID are free, and non‑members ages 15 and up pay $10. There are no shirts or finisher medals, but small age group awards may be available, and additional awards go to the first 25 runners overall and to the top color team of runners and the top color team of walkers. The WingMan 10K emphasizes camaraderie and teamwork. Participants are randomly placed on color teams to keep group sizes balanced. Runners are assigned to yellow, green, blue, orange, red, or purple, and walkers to black or gray, with wristbands to match. A staggered start based on age and sex helps level the competition across teams, and chip timing records each participant’s actual race time. Registration is available online, with race day options also provided if needed. Minors must be registered by a parent or guardian and have a signed liability waiver, and pre‑registered entrants pick up timing chips at the green table. Because of the staggered start, late registrations cannot be accepted. Members who do not register online must show proof of membership to receive member pricing. For safety and insurance reasons, animals are not permitted except for service dogs, and verification may be requested. Created by race director Eddie Weaver in memory of his friend Joshua Shepherd, one of six service members who lost their lives in a B‑52 crash near Guam, the event honors their legacy by celebrating friendship, pursuing goals, and looking out for one another.
