Fast Laps 4

MVMBA’s FAST LAPS returns to the John Bryan State Park Mountain Bike Trails with a free training ride that now requires a current MVMBA membership. Weather and trail conditions will shape the day, and a make-up week may be used if an activity is canceled. This season features a one-time series registration and reusable bibs with RFID timing. The first bib is included, replacement plates carry a small fee, and riders can choose a specific number in person for a nominal charge. Start by completing the series sign-up to confirm membership, provide contact and emergency details, and sign the season waiver, then use the same email to register for this activity. Bring your permanent number plate. A helmet and a digitally signed activity release are required at check-in, and participants under 18 need a parent or legal guardian signature. Early online registration is strongly encouraged since on-site sign-ups are limited and can be slowed by spotty connectivity. Check-in must be finished before the start to ensure you are on the start list. Riders set off by self-seeded groups, waves by category, or individual time trial starts, and a short double-track prologue may be included on a taped course. Lap count and total distance depend on trail conditions. The full course typically covers about 10 to 12 miles and runs roughly 40 to 75 minutes for most riders, with about half that effort for beginners and juniors. A prologue-only option is available for kids and non-pedal classes. Calling out your bib number at the lap line helps the timing crew. Categories for the full course include Advanced or Expert, Fatbike with tires 3.8 inches and wider, Masters 50 plus, Grand Masters 60 plus, Sport, Tandem, High School under 18, and Recreational. Short course options include Beginners or Novices, Juniors under 14, and a Recreational short course. A very short loop is offered for Kids and for Striders or balance bikes. Start order may be influenced by prior results. Overall top three men and women may be recognized, and top overall finishers may be excluded from category podiums. The committee may move riders to a different class when appropriate. Courtesy and safe riding are expected, and unsafe conduct can result in removal from the series. Categories and format may be adjusted based on turnout and demand. Volunteers are needed, especially for timing, as well as for check-in, setup, spotting number plates, course marshaling, sweep riding, results, podium support, teardown, and packing. Donations support MVMBA activities. To suggest improvements or volunteer, contact mvmbafastlaps@gmail.com. For sponsorship inquiries, contact mvmba.bike@gmail.com.

Victorian SoFo Walking Tour

Take a relaxed, guided stroll through Springfield’s SoFo neighborhood to explore how a remarkable 1875 residence shaped the avenue’s character. Frank and Mary Bookwalter commissioned a grand French Second Empire home, designed by local architect Franklin H. Penfield, at a time when many cities were discouraging wood construction. That bold choice helped make South Fountain Avenue one of the city’s most fashionable places to live. The walk is led by Kevin Rose, former national president of the Victorian Society. It is part of the Summer Tour Series he launched in 2004 to highlight Springfield’s architectural heritage, which has grown from eight neighborhood walks to well over a dozen guided tours across the Greater Springfield region under the guidance of a volunteer committee. Mobility Level 1, with about six blocks or less on mostly flat, paved terrain. Stairs are unlikely and the route is wheelchair accessible. Tickets are $15 for the general public and $12 for members. Tours from the Westcott House and Westcott Center for Architecture + Design are planned for a broad audience and move at an easy pace with brief stops. Some inclines or stairs may be involved if a building is entered. Virtual tour options with closed captioning are available. For questions about accessibility, contact the Westcott House.

Springfield Burying Ground Hour Tour

Historian Kevin Rose leads a guided walk through Springfield’s oldest burial ground, a site bordered on two sides by the former Metallic Casket Company complex. Set aside by James Demint in 1801, this cemetery holds many of the community’s earliest residents, including Demint. Stories along the route highlight trailblazing women, Revolutionary War soldiers, and a participant in the Boston Tea Party. The tour meets outside Mother Stewart’s Brewery and wraps up with a visit inside the brewery, located in a restored section of the old casket factory, with one drink included in the $20 ticket. Rated Mobility Level 2, the route may extend beyond six blocks with some hills, mostly paved surfaces, and occasional stairs. Tours move at a relaxed pace with brief periods of standing and are developed for a broad audience, including participants with disabilities or decreased mobility.

Fast Laps 5

Fast Laps returns to the John Bryan State Park mountain bike trails with a taped course and a start format that may be self seeded, by wave, or run as a time trial. Trail and weather conditions will set the number of laps and overall distance, with shorter options for beginners and juniors and a prologue only option for kids and no pedal classes. Riders are asked to call out their bib number at the lap line to help with timing. Participation is free with a current MVMBA membership required. A one time series registration covers the season, and that same email must be used when signing up for individual activities. Keep contact and emergency information current and have a digitally signed activity release on file. Helmets are required. Riders under 18 need a parent or legal guardian to sign the release. Limited on site registration may be offered but is difficult due to connectivity and staffing, so advance registration is encouraged. Permanent number plates with RFID tags are issued; the first plate is free, replacements have a small fee, and riders may select a preferred number in person for an additional charge. If weather forces a cancellation, an activity may be rescheduled for the following week. Categories span many abilities and ages. Full course options include Advanced or Expert, Fatbike with tire width requirements, Masters and Grand Masters age groups, Sport for intermediate riders, Tandem, High School, and a non podium Recreational class. Short course options include Beginners and Novices, Juniors under fourteen, and a non podium Recreational Short Course. There is also a very short course for young riders, including Kids and Strider or balance bike groups. Start order may be set by prior results and could use wave or time trial starts. Overall top finishers may be recognized. Organizers may move riders to other classes to keep starts fair and safe, and courteous riding is expected. Unsafe or unsportsmanlike behavior may affect participation in the series. Volunteers are welcome to support timing, check in, setup, spotting number plates, course marshaling, sweep riding, results, podium awards, and course teardown and packing. Donations that support MVMBA activities are appreciated.

Reiki Level 1 Shoden | Self Reiki and Energy Awareness

Explore self Reiki and energy awareness in a four-class, in-person Level 1 Shoden series with Reiki Master Teacher Mandy Carter. The course centers on personal practice and understanding how energy flows in the body, with practical techniques to ground, calm the nervous system, and work with your own energy rather than taking on what belongs to others. Participants learn how breath supports energy movement, develop awareness of the connection between body, energy, and life, and practice hands-on techniques that encourage trust in inner light. The series welcomes everyone, including empaths and highly sensitive people, those navigating anxiety or overthinking, anyone affected by the energy of others, individuals moving through an awakening or deep inner change, people drawn to healing work for themselves and others, and both beginners and students from other Reiki lineages seeking a fuller understanding of the system. No prior experience is required, and it can also serve as a meaningful reset for those already familiar with Reiki. Tuition is $250 and includes a manual. Registration follows a simple flow this year, starting with a one time series sign up to confirm membership, collect contact and emergency details, and complete the season waiver, then registering for this activity using the same email as the series. New for the season, riders use permanent bibs with RFID tags. The first plate is free, replacements are available for a small fee, and choosing a specific bib number can be done in person on a first come basis. Pre event registration through Webscorer is encouraged so on site check in can quickly verify your release and number plate. A helmet and a digitally signed activity release are required to ride, and participants under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign. Limited on site registration may be possible but can be challenging due to connectivity and staffing, so early sign ups help ensure a smooth start. This session is a training ride on a taped course and may use a self seeded group start, waves by category, or a time trial format. Lap counts and route length depend on conditions. A short prologue option is available for kids and no pedal classes. Riders are asked to call out their bib number at the lap line to assist timing. Multiple course options and categories are offered. Full course choices include Advanced or Expert, Fatbike with tires 3.8 inches and wider, Masters 50 plus, Grand Masters 60 plus, Sport, Tandem, High School, and Recreational. Short course choices include Beginners and Novices, Juniors under 14, and a recreational short course that skips black diamond trails. A very short route supports kids and strider or balance bike riders. Starts may be ordered by prior results, overall top finishers may be recognized, and organizers may move riders to different classes to keep things fair and safe. These activities run weather and course permitting, with a make up week planned after any cancellation. Volunteers are essential and help is welcome with timing, check ins, setup, course marshalling, sweeping, results, podium awards, teardown, and packing. Horse Lords at the Foundry Theater

Horse Lords bring their distinctive instrumental music to the Foundry Theater, presenting a set shaped by intricate patterns, microtonal tuning on custom-fretted instruments, and techniques rooted in Renaissance-era contrapuntal practice. Formed in 2010, the Baltimore-rooted quartet builds long-form pieces that emphasize repetition, complexity, and evolving rhythmic interplay. Guitarist Owen Gardner and saxophonist and percussionist Andrew Bernstein first connected at Goucher College, then, through the city’s scene and the group Teeth Mountain, linked up with bassist Max Eilbacher and drummer Sam Haberman. Their varied backgrounds span global folk traditions and electroacoustic work, and together they craft music that is both methodical and exploratory. They have also interpreted compositions by Julius Eastman. A guiding thread of their approach is the question of how wordless music can carry political meaning, shaping decisions that integrate aesthetic intent with social and material concerns.

Springfield Burying Ground Hour Tour

The former Metallic Casket Company complex frames two sides of the city’s oldest cemetery, setting the scene for a guided walk led by historian Kevin Rose. Set aside by James Demint in 1801, this burial ground holds many of Springfield’s earliest residents, including Demint himself. Along the route, hear accounts of trailblazing women, veterans of the American Revolution, and a participant in the Boston Tea Party. After the walk, the group visits Mother Stewart’s Brewery, housed in a restored part of the casket factory, and the cost includes one drink there. Meet outside the brewery to begin. The cost is $20 and includes one beverage. Part of the Summer Tour Series created in 2004 by Kevin Rose, a historian with the Turner Foundation, this program highlights Springfield’s built environment and has expanded over the years to feature between fourteen and twenty guided outings across the Greater Springfield region, shaped by a committee of community volunteers. Tours move at an easy pace with brief stops, and this outing is designated Mobility Level 2, which may involve more than six blocks of walking, some hills, mostly paved surfaces, and occasional stairs.

South Center Street Walking Tour

Trace the history of Springfield’s South Center Street area on a guided walk through one of the city’s earliest Black neighborhoods, founded in the 1820s when Springfield was home to one of the largest Black communities in the northern United States. Along the way, hear about notable figures who lived there, including C.M. Patterson, Robert C. Henry, and George and Sarah Gammon. The walk concludes with a look at how community leaders today are addressing decline linked to decades of discriminatory policies. Led by Dale Henry and Kevin Rose, the tour is rated Mobility Level 2, which indicates a longer route that is mostly paved with some hills and potential stairs, and it moves at a relaxed pace with brief stops. Tours are designed for a broad audience, including participants with disabilities or decreased mobility, and virtual options with closed captions are available. Admission is $15 for the general public and $12 for members. The Summer Tour Series, created in 2004 by Kevin Rose of the Turner Foundation to highlight Springfield’s built environment, has grown from eight neighborhood walks to 14 to 20 tours across the Greater Springfield region and is organized by a committee of community volunteers.

Hills and Dales by Mail Walking Tour

Step into the era when mail order catalogs helped shape Springfield’s streetscape. Catalog house historian Cindy Catanzaro leads a guided walk through the southern portion of the Hills and Dales neighborhood, where a notable concentration of Sears kit houses sits alongside designs inspired by popular pattern books from the 1920s and 1930s. Admission is $15 for the general public and $12 for members. This outing is designated Mobility Level 1, meaning up to six blocks on mostly flat, paved terrain, with stairs unlikely and wheelchair access available. The walk is part of the Summer Tour Series, launched in 2004 by Kevin Rose of the Turner Foundation to spotlight Springfield’s built environment. What began with eight neighborhood walks has grown over two decades into 14 to 20 guided tours across the Greater Springfield Region, shaped by a dedicated committee of community volunteers. Tours presented by the Westcott House and the Westcott Center for Architecture + Design are designed for a wide range of participants, move at an easy pace with brief standing at stops, and may include occasional steps or inclines when entering buildings. Virtual tour options are available with closed captioning.
