Charter LaneLive in the Lobby Jazz with Lew Tabackin
Presented by the Koger Center and the ColaJazz Foundation, this concert is part of the new 2026 Live in the Lobby Jazz season, a partnership of the Koger Center for the Arts and the ColaJazz Foundation that brings six performances to spaces throughout the Koger Center. The series offers top tier jazz and distinctive programs in a memorable environment. This installment features Lew Tabackin, a flutist and tenor saxophonist known for a powerful artistic vision. His flute playing pairs formidable technique with deep expressiveness and cross cultural color. On tenor saxophone, he explores wide intervals, sudden shifts in mood and tempo, and an intensity that highlights the instrument’s melodic, rhythmic, and dynamic range. Rather than echoing past jazz icons, he has shaped influences into a sound that is uniquely his own. Tabackin began in Philadelphia, first studying flute and later tenor saxophone in high school. He earned a Bachelor of Music in flute from the Philadelphia Conservatory of Music in 1962 and studied privately with composer Vincent Persichetti. Following U.S. Army service from 1962 to 1965, he moved to New Jersey and then New York, performing with Tal Farlow and Don Friedman and later working in big bands led by Cab Calloway, Les and Larry Elgart, Maynard Ferguson, Joe Henderson, Chuck Israels, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Clark Terry, and Duke Pearson. In the late 1960s he led a trio at La Boheme in Philadelphia and played in smaller groups with Donald Byrd, Roland Hanna, Elvin Jones, and Attila Zoller. His credits also include work with Doc Severinsen and the studio band for Dick Cavett’s television show, as well as European solo appearances with the Danish Radio Orchestra and the Hamburg Jazz Workshop.

A monthly pack walk brings local dog owners together at Saluda Shoals Park for a relaxed trail outing. It is a chance to meet other dog lovers, socialize, and enjoy an easygoing walk while helping build a supportive dog community in Lexington. Most trails are dog friendly. Participants are encouraged to use a simple color cue on a bandana, collar, or leash to set expectations and keep interactions comfortable. Green means friendly and social with people and dogs. Purple signals a dog that may show aggression around possessions, attention, or food in certain situations, and participants are asked to let an admin know so accommodations can be considered. Yellow indicates a nervous or shy dog that needs extra space. Red identifies a reactive or not dog-friendly dog that requires distance. Shared etiquette helps make the experience positive for everyone. Keep dogs on leash in accordance with local rules, maintain safe spacing, ask before allowing dogs to greet, avoid forcing interactions, clean up after your dog, bring water for both person and pup, and stay aware of your surroundings. Geese are nesting with goslings, so do not allow pets to interact with them, as geese may hiss or give chase. Dogs should be up to date on vaccinations. If a dog is highly reactive, come prepared to manage space. If a dog becomes overwhelmed, stepping away early is acceptable. Owners are responsible for their dogs at all times. The atmosphere is judgment free and welcoming for all experience levels, with a focus on learning, connection, and growth.
