Adult Baking Class: Take ’N Bake

An adult Take ’N Bake class at The Curious Kitchen welcomes baking enthusiasts who prefer less cleanup to create bakery-level desserts they can finish or enjoy at home. Enjoy a relaxed session focused on technique as you bake, package your creations, and leave with treats ready to bake later or serve right away. The menu includes glazed shortbread butter cookies with bright citrus flavor, vanilla bean cupcakes with a chocolate ganache center and caramel buttercream on top, individual fruit tarts, and chocolate bark studded with freeze-dried fruit and nuts. It is ideal for spring entertaining or a personal indulgence. Space is limited.

Poetry Reading & Open Mic

Enjoy an evening of live poetry at Dapper Owl with a featured reading by Murfreesboro poet Wes Houp, followed by an open mic. Open mic signups take place on site when doors open, and there is no early admittance. Readers are welcome to share original poems or a favorite piece by another writer, with up to two poems per slot. Please keep material suitable for a general audience that may include younger attendees. Complimentary drip coffee and light bites will be available, and the cafe menu offers coffee, tea, beer, cider, chips, and baked goods. Writers who enjoy a prompt are invited to weave in audience-selected words such as disingenuous, cinnamon, children, patch, future, hope, trudge, calcification, grandkids, and catholic or Catholic. Admission is free, and donations of 5 dollars or more are appreciated to help offset costs, with contributions accepted on site. Overflow parking is available on the Arnold Lane side of the building; park perpendicular to maximize space and avoid blocking driveways. The featured reader, Wesley Houp, won the 2024 James Baker Hall Book Award for his first full-length collection, Strung Out Along the Endless Branch, published by Accents Publishing in May 2025. His work has appeared in Black Warrior Review, Kentucky Poetry Review, Chattahoochee Review, Kansas City Review, and the anthology Tributarias from Dos Madres Press. Support from MTSU Write and the Rutherford Arts Alliance helps make this gathering possible.

Flat Rock Wildflowers

Experience Middle Tennessee’s distinctive cedar glades and barrens on an easy to moderate hike of about four miles at Flat Rock Cedar Glades & Barrens State Natural Area in Murfreesboro. This joint outing with the Murfreesboro and Highland Rim Chapters moves at a relaxed pace to enjoy wooded stretches, open meadows, and rocky openings. Expect to see more than 30 wildflower species, including some rare plants adapted to this unique habitat. The route is mostly level with gentle rises, though certain sections can be uneven, wet, or muddy, so sturdy footwear is recommended. Bring plenty of water and snacks, and include sun and insect protection. Participants must sign a liability waiver. Contact Mark to register and receive updates. A post-hike lunch is planned at Carmen’s Taqueria in Murfreesboro.
