Lake Kokanee Waterfall Kayak Tour

A new 2026 kayak tour offers a 90 minute paddle on the clear, green waters of Lake Kokanee, also known as Lower Lake Cushman. Paddlers travel across calm water bordered by towering old growth evergreens while learning about the lake’s history, the lichen and mushrooms along its shores, and the osprey that thrive here. The route builds to a visit at the base of a tumbling waterfall. A guide brings the group close enough to feel the cool mist, take in the distinctive sounds, and capture photos or video, and can also snap pictures for participants. This outing suits those who prefer lake kayaking, first-time paddlers, families with young children, and anyone short on time who still wants time on the water in the Hood Canal area. After the paddle, Hoodsport is a short drive down the mountain with places to eat.

WesTX Burnout Battle at the Smoke Pit

WesTX Burnout Battle at the Smoke Pit presents a competitive burnout contest with cash awards for the top finishers. First place earns $6,000, second place earns $2,500, third place earns $1,000, and fourth place earns $500. Safety and equipment rules apply. A helmet, a fire suit, and a seatbelt are required, vehicles must have a full firewall and a battery disconnect switch, and turbo cars must have X bolts installed in the exhaust. Hubcaps, aluminum wheels, and wheel weights are not allowed. Judging follows a point system that awards 10 points for instant smoke, 30 points for tip-in hype, 20 points for constant smoke, 30 points for driver skill, and 10 points for crowd hype. Penalties include a 5 point deduction for each tire that does not blow and a 10 point deduction for a wall hit that changes the car’s direction, while light wall taps are acceptable. A fire that stops the run results in disqualification, tire fires reduce the smoke score, and reversing before the tires blow also results in disqualification. Reversing after the tires are blown is permitted. Additional details will be shared soon.

Rising Star — A South African Astronomy Journey

Settle in for an immersive planetarium film that traces humanity’s beginnings and the rise of astronomy research in South Africa, then looks ahead to what the future may hold. The program introduces multi-wavelength and multi-messenger astronomy and spotlights notable facilities and recent findings, including unrestricted views of the 10-metre class Southern African Large Telescope and MeerKAT, the most powerful radio telescope in the Southern Hemisphere. Accessible to all ages, this 24-minute experience is crafted to spark curiosity about South African astronomy and inspire the next generation of explorers. As the first production of its kind created in Africa, it encourages more locally produced planetarium films across disciplines and helps highlight the continent’s many scientific achievements. Directed by Telmo dos Reis and narrated by Katlego Maboe. Admission is $5 per person. Seating is limited to 70, with two wheelchair-accessible seating areas available. Tickets are available online or at the door. Recommended for ages 6 and up.

Spend a day at the track with a pre-race Test & Tune session available for anyone needing a shakedown, with a tech card required for participation. Race day follows with racer and spectator gate access, a drivers meeting before competition, and on-track action to close out the program. General admission on the spectator side is available, pit side parking for non-racers can be purchased, and RV options include daily parking without a racecar as well as spaces with power. Credit card payments include a small additional fee. The spotlight divisions feature big stakes. True Street offers a $20,000 purse with a 20 car minimum, runs off the trailer, and requires a $300 buy-in plus a $40 tech fee. Cars must be street legal with VIN, registration, and plates, and they must run on DOT-stamped radials. No wheelie bars are allowed. Tire rules include 275 radials or 28x10 non-W options, and 17 inch or larger wheels may use any size radial. Factory-style front suspension in the stock shock location is required, as are the factory dash and front glass. All factory body panels and doors must remain, with aftermarket hoods, trunk lids, and bumpers permitted. Functional roll-up windows are required. Cooling and charging systems must work. No tube chassis is allowed, although bolt-in or weld-in K-members are acceptable, as are shock relocation kits, aftermarket shocks and springs, ladder bars, and mini tubs. No added weight may extend past the rear bumper or body, and cars cannot be pushed to the lanes. Only factory-style wings are permitted, with carbon replacements allowed, and low-profile race wings are acceptable. A fire jacket and helmet are mandatory, shorts are not permitted, and an engine diaper or belly pan is preferred. Daily Driver pays $15,000 with a 20 car minimum and requires a $250 entry plus a $40 tech fee. Vehicles must be tagged, titled, and insured, with factory glass, body panels, and frame. A fiberglass hood is acceptable. The interior must be complete, although a back seat delete is allowed. Seats must be car seats with padding, and at least two seats are required. Headlights, turn signals, brake lights, and the factory charging system must function. Suspension must stay in the factory location, and if the car came with IRS, it must remain IRS. If the vehicle was built with a factory 4-link or ladder bar, it must stay stock with no aftermarket 4-link parts. Fuel cannot be alcohol or methanol as the primary source, though blends are allowed. Exhaust must exit to the rear end or out the back. Tires must be DOT radials, with 275s or 17 inch and larger wheels allowed on any size DOT radial. AWD is permitted on radials with 400 treadwear all around. No wheelie bars or exterior weight past the body line or bumper are allowed, and only factory-style or carbon fiber wings are permitted. A fire jacket and helmet are required, shorts are not allowed, and an engine diaper or belly pan is preferred. Small Tire awards $10,000 with a 20 car minimum, runs off the trailer, and has a $300 entry plus a $40 tech fee. Cars must use 28x10.5 non-W tires, be door cars that start from the driver’s seat, and have a driveshaft safety loop. Steel roofs and quarters are required unless the factory configuration differs, such as convertibles. No wheelie bars or added weight past the rear bumper are allowed. An engine diaper or belly pan is preferred. Index classes at 8.20, 7.50, 6.50, and 5.50 offer 100 percent payback, with a $150 entry and a $40 tech card per class. These classes run on a .400 pro tree, are limited to door cars, and do not allow wheelie bars or delay boxes. Parking and admission options include spectator-side general admission at $20, pit-side parking for non-racers at $50, RV daily parking without a racecar at $100, and RV parking with power at $75. Paying by card adds $5.

Design-A-Dino: Take Home Craft

Children can stop in to pick up a mini dinosaur and a set of paints for a take-home art project, then return their finished creation to the library to be included in a summer community display connected to the dinosaur-themed Summer Reading Challenge. Kids will be able to spot their artwork on exhibit alongside a colorful collection of dinos. Craft kits are available until supplies run out.

Merrill Park Renovation Project

Community meetings at the park’s large pavilion will gather ideas to guide improvements for Merrill’s park system. The project aims to assess and upgrade key features, including drainage, playgrounds, ball fields, basketball courts, walking paths, picnic spaces, bleachers, landscaping, and solar lighting, among other elements. Each session focuses on how to boost the park’s appearance and usefulness, with examples such as adding tennis courts, pickleball courts, or a splash area. Input will help create an action plan for the village council, including strategies to secure resources so the park can serve both current and future residents. Derby Day 2026

The second annual HBA Derby Day takes place at Hilton Garden Inn Abilene in support of Camp Able. Guests are encouraged to arrive in standout Derby attire, from eye catching hats to sharp suits, for a festive gathering that pairs good times, food, and charitable spirit. Expect games with friendly wagering, prize contests for best hat, most dapper man, and best couple, and a live broadcast of the Kentucky Derby. Big Country CASA Superhero 5K Fun Run

Now in its ninth year, this superhero-themed 5K takes place at the ACU Williams Performing Arts Center and welcomes walkers and runners of all ages. The event raises awareness of CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates, helps recruit volunteer advocates, and generates funds that support Big Country CASA in giving a voice to abused and neglected children in court and within the foster care system in Taylor County, with all race proceeds directed to this mission. Timed registration for ages 13 and up is $30 and includes a race shirt for those who register by the stated deadline. Timed entries for kids 12 and under are $10, with an optional shirt available for purchase when registering by the deadline. Kids 12 and under may also participate in an untimed 5K at no cost, with the option to buy a shirt. Children 11 and under can take part in the free Chase the Villain activity, with the same optional shirt purchase. After the shirt deadline, overflow shirts may be offered in assorted colors and sizes cannot be guaranteed. The atmosphere is family friendly and suitable for every fitness level. Team signups are encouraged, and a prize will go to the largest team.

Youth Powerlifting Camp

A summer youth powerlifting camp in the Lytle area focuses on safe technique and smart training. It welcomes experienced young lifters who want to sharpen their skills as well as newcomers who need a foundation in gym safety and proper form. The program runs as a single eight-week session with limited spots available. A $50 nonrefundable deposit is required to secure a place. During these two months, the regular Tuesday and Thursday class will follow an adjusted schedule.

Racers earn points across a five-event series, with the top ten in each class advancing to a championship playoff at Freedom of War. The weekend includes a Friday test and tune with a $40 tech fee, followed by the Scrambler Pro Series on Saturday with racer and spectator gates opening, a drivers meeting, and racing to follow. General admission on the spectator side is $20. Pit side parking for non-racers is $50. RV daily parking without a racecar is $100, and RV parking with power is $175. Credit card purchases include a $5 convenience fee. The points system awards 35 points for passing tech, 20 points for a competition round win, and 20 points for a bye. For the first five races, class payouts and rules are as follows. Scrambler pays $5,000, uses a random index of 5.50 to 5.80 each round, has a $250 entry and $40 tech card, requires a minimum of 20 cars, runs on a 0.400 pro tree, and is limited to door cars with no wheelie bars and no delay boxes. Baby Scrambler pays $3,000, features a 7.50 to 7.80 random index, has a $150 entry and $40 tech card, requires a 20 car minimum, uses a 0.400 pro tree, and is also limited to door cars with no wheelie bars and no delay boxes. After the fifth event, totals are calculated and the top ten in each class move on, with a finale that pays $15,000 for Scrambler, $11,000 for Lil Scrambler, and $10,000 for Baby Scrambler. 2026 Abilene Cattle Baron's Ball Golf Tournament

Enjoy a full day of play with registration and breakfast kicking things off, followed by a putting contest and the first shotgun start. This grand opening in Abilene, Texas showcases a new, advanced facility. The celebration features lunch, demonstrations of professional equipment, and special giveaways.

Scrambler Pro Shootout Series - Race 5

The final Scrambler Pro Series Shootout brings the regular season to a close, and when the points are tallied after this event the top ten racers in each class will advance to the championship playoff at Freedom of War. The schedule features a Friday Test and Tune session with tech inspection available for $40, followed by the main Scrambler Pro Series racing on Saturday. Spectator side general admission is $20. Pit side parking for non racers is $50. RV parking without a race car is $100 per day, and RV parking with power is $175. A $5 convenience fee applies to all credit card purchases. Points are awarded for key milestones. Passing tech earns 35 points, each competition round win is worth 20 points, and a bye also awards 20 points. Class payouts and rules for the first five races apply here. In Scrambler, the winner receives $5,000 with a $250 entry and a $40 tech card, a 20 car minimum, a .400 pro tree, a random index between 5.50 and 5.80 each round, door cars only, no wheelie bars, and no delay boxes. In Lil Scrambler, the purse is $4,000 with a $200 entry and a $40 tech card, a 20 car minimum, a .400 pro tree, a random index between 6.50 and 6.80 each round, door cars only, no wheelie bars, and no delay boxes. In Baby Scrambler, the purse is $3,000 with a $150 entry and a $40 tech card, a 20 car minimum, a .400 pro tree, a random index between 7.50 and 7.80 each round, door cars only, no wheelie bars, and no delay boxes. After this race decides the top ten in each class, the finale will award $15,000 in Scrambler, $11,000 in Lil Scrambler, and $10,000 in Baby Scrambler, with all classes paying out on an 80 to 20 split.

Morning Music Camp!

Start the day with song at Morning Music Camp from Chorus Abilene, hosted at Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest. Under the guidance of Children’s Chorus director Robin Davis, students entering grades K through 5 take part in singing, learning, and fun in a welcoming setting. The week concludes with a capstone performance. Tuition is $175, and scholarships are available. No prior experience is required.

The Open Championship - 2 Man Scramble

Wrap up the Abi Golf Cup Series at its Open Championship, a one-day event in a 2-Man Scramble format that highlights inventive shot-making, flexible strategy, and consistent performance. Serving as the series finale, it provides a final opportunity to secure bragging rights and enjoy a true championship atmosphere.
