At Jesse H. Jones Park & Nature Center, a Wildlife Wednesday program spotlights the Ornate Box Turtle, one of two box turtle species that may be seen in the park alongside the three-toed box turtle. The presentation explores the turtle’s range across the central United States, from western Indiana through eastern Texas and Louisiana to parts of northeastern New Mexico. Because of their small size, young turtles face many threats from predators such as crows, raptors, ravens, domestic cats and dogs, opossums, raccoons, skunks, snakes, and even adult box turtles, and their main defense is closing tightly into the shell. Individuals can live roughly three to nearly four decades, and warmer incubation conditions tend to result in more females. The program also covers diet and reproduction. Ornate box turtles eat what is available season by season, including grasses, berries, insects like caterpillars, grasshoppers, and beetles, earthworms, fruits, vegetables, and carrion, which helps reduce competition for food. Females typically lay a single clutch each year in shallow sandy nests, most often 4 to 6 leathery, elliptical eggs, with incubation lasting about 60 to 70 days and hatching by late summer. Cooler nests produce mostly males while warmer nests yield mostly females, it takes about 8 to 10 years to reach maturity, and many eggs do not survive to adulthood. A live Ornate Box Turtle will be featured, and the program is free and open to all ages.

Explore how this agile mammal is built for life in and around water, with dense insulating fur, webbed feet, a streamlined body and head, and a powerful tail that drives swift swimming. It can stay underwater for up to eight minutes. Long whiskers help locate prey in murky conditions, and clawed feet provide a sure grip on slippery catches. On land it can run near 15 miles per hour and can slide even faster. Playful behaviors like sliding in mud or snow, tail chasing, water play, and burrowing serve to build social bonds and help young otters practice hunting skills. Learn about size and appearance, with adults reaching 3 to 4 feet in length including the tail and weighing 11 to 30 pounds, males typically larger. The tail accounts for roughly one third of total length. Fur is generally dark brown above with lighter coloring on the belly and face. The session also examines range and habitat across most of Canada and the United States, with occurrences in Mexico along the Rio Grande and Colorado River delta. River otters thrive in ponds, marshes, lakes, rivers, and estuaries in a wide range of climates as long as food is abundant and water is clean and relatively undisturbed. They often share landscapes with beavers. Dens sit along the water in abandoned burrows or hollows, with underwater entrances for easy access. Predators can include bobcats, alligators, coyotes, raptors, and other large hunters. Diet and behavior topics include a varied menu of fish, crayfish, crabs, frogs, birds and their eggs, reptiles such as turtles, aquatic plants, and occasional small mammals like muskrats or rabbits. Their fast metabolism means they eat frequently. Communication involves whistles, yelps, growls, and screams, along with touch, body posture, and scent marking from glands near the tail that produce a strong musky odor. Reproduction and life history are covered as well, including breeding in late winter or early spring, litters of one to three pups that are born blind and begin swimming at about two months, a mostly solitary or small-group lifestyle, and a lifespan of eight to nine years in the wild with records up to 21 years in human care. The program also addresses conservation history. Heavy trapping and hunting for fur in the 19th and 20th centuries reduced numbers and eliminated the species from some areas, while reintroduction and protection have supported recoveries. Habitat loss and polluted waterways remain significant threats. The program takes place in the Nature Center and is free and open to all ages.

Wildlife Wednesday -- the Red-tailed Hawk
Discover the Red-tailed Hawk in an informative Wildlife Wednesday program held inside the Nature Center building. Free and welcoming to raptor enthusiasts of all ages, this session focuses on one of North America’s most familiar hawks, sometimes called chickenhawk in the United States. The Red-tailed Hawk breeds across most of the continent, from western Alaska and northern Canada to Panama and the West Indies. It thrives in deserts, grasslands, coniferous and deciduous forests, agricultural areas, and cities, while avoiding unbroken forest and the high arctic. It is protected in Canada, Mexico, and the United States under the Migratory Bird Treaty. Attendees can expect an overview of identification and natural history. Adults have a sturdy build with broad wings and a tail that is brick red above and pale buff orange below. Typical measurements range from 18 to 26 inches in length with a wingspan of about 43 to 57 inches, and females are larger than males. Immature birds show a banded tail and yellowish eyes that gradually deepen to reddish brown as they mature. The program highlights the hawk’s varied diet that centers on small mammals, especially rodents, but can include birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates, with occasional scavenging. Mated pairs usually remain together for life, building stick nests high in trees and sharing incubation and care of a small spring clutch. There are 14 recognized subspecies that differ in appearance and distribution. Because of their abundance and trainability, these hawks are widely used in falconry in the United States, and their feathers and other parts are considered sacred by many American indigenous people. Background on the name will also be shared, including that Buteo comes from Latin for buzzard and jamaicensis refers to Jamaica, derived from the Taíno word Xaymaca meaning land of woods and water.

Meet Lincoln, a live ambassador snake, and learn how to recognize this species by its broad beige or pink body marked with 13 to 20 dark brown bands that narrow across the back into an hourglass pattern, a design that blends perfectly with fallen leaves and pine straw in Harris County. The session covers when copperheads are most active, including their tendency to soak up warmth on roads, trails, and other heat-holding surfaces during cool evenings, and explains why sightings peak in spring and autumn. Expect clear guidance on behavior and safety, including how these snakes typically rely on camouflage rather than confrontation, why most bites happen when people try to kill or handle them or accidentally step on one, and the importance of seeking prompt medical care if a bite occurs.
