Childbirth Classes

South Texas Health System offers a comprehensive childbirth education class that guides expectant parents through the changes that occur during pregnancy, the phases of labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery. The session covers breastfeeding basics, core anatomy and physiology, nutrition, relaxation and breathing techniques, and newborn care. Participants also view videos of both vaginal and cesarean births and take a tour of the delivery suites. The class is held at The Women’s Corner at South Texas Health System Edinburg, with a virtual option available and access details provided before the session begins. Palm Valley Animal Society is preparing for kitten season with a Kitten Shower at the Laurie P. Andrews location. The program also introduces the role of kitten fosters who offer lifesaving care, comfort, and socialization until the animals are ready for adoption. One unspayed female cat and her offspring can produce more than 400,000 cats over a lifetime, so spaying and neutering pets makes a meaningful difference.

Compete in a Commander tournament at The Pocket featuring the Bracket 2 EDH format. Entry is $5, and custom software will be used. Top finishers receive 125 percent store credit. Deck construction and play follow Bracket 2 guidelines. Cards on the Game Changers list are not permitted. Intentional two-card infinite combos and mass land denial are prohibited. Extra turn effects should be included sparingly and are not meant to be chained or looped, and tutors should be kept to a minimum. The official banned and restricted list is in effect. Standings use a point system. First place earns 4 points, second earns 3, third earns 2, and fourth earns 1. Tied players split the remaining points. If overtime occurs, each player takes one final turn, then any players still in the game are recorded as tied. Seating and final ranking are also influenced by how quickly players close their games compared with others who have the same point total.

5th Annual South Texas New Play Festival

South Texas College Theatre and Dance presents the 5th Annual South Texas New Play Festival, a celebration of new writing selected from 30 submissions by a committee of playwrights, theatre artists, and STC faculty and staff. Three finalists receive staged readings directed by a theatre director and performed by actors from the Rio Grande Valley, with a post-show conversation after each presentation. The festival is dedicated to nurturing fresh voices and contemporary perspectives, and also features a workshop production drawn from last year’s festival, a playwrights panel, and a playwriting workshop. Readings are scheduled in the STC Cooper Center for Performing Arts Black Box. The lineup features Ironin’ Man! by Jorge E. Rodriguez, following Don Alex, a former American basketball standout who was deported to Tijuana and now runs a dry-cleaning shop. News of an upcoming rock concert propels him into a quest for redemption as he and his two employees forge a surrogate family, tested by shifting border politics, consumer culture, gentrification along the northern Mexican border, migration, and social media dynamics that can deepen division. Waiting by Donna Kaz offers a comedic look at the pursuit of an acting career. Lucy arrives from the Midwest determined to make it onstage, but her first role is at the Great White Café, where every server is also an aspiring actor. Under a manager hostile to artists, the staff wrestle with whether the adrenaline and showmanship of waiting tables is keeping them from the parts they truly want. Set in a recent era when speaking up about harassment often came at a cost, the play asks if actor-waiters can break out of type. Wise Guys by Gabriel Diego Hernández centers on four quick-witted high school juniors and their overburdened teacher grinding through summer school, pushing one another to the brink. Years later, they look back and try to make sense of what unfolded.

Mission Crime Stoppers presents the 21st Annual Community Golf Tournament, a fundraiser that supports local programs including scholarships for students, toy drives for children in need, community policing initiatives, National Night Out, and more. Since 2000, the organization has given back through donations, scholarships, and outreach that benefits families across the Mission area. Team registration is open and community sponsors are welcome. Competing teams will play for gift certificate prizes of $600 for first place, $400 for second, and $200 for third. Celebrate a first-ever pet fest filled with shopping, tasty bites, entertainment, and more. Browse pet-focused shops and more than 40 local vendors, then stop by food and drink stalls. Meet adoptable animals and spend time in the petting zoo. The event welcomes all pets and is designed for families as well. Admission is free. Water stations will be available throughout the market to help pets stay cool. The first 100 pet lovers in line will receive door prizes.

6th Annual City of Edinburg Triathlon

Offering options for various ages and experience levels, this event includes three divisions with clearly defined swim, bike, and run segments. The 12-and-under division consists of a 100 meter swim, a 4.5 mile bike ride, and a 1 mile run. The recreational division for ages 13 and up follows the same distances. The competitive division increases the challenge with a 200 meter swim, a 9 mile bike leg, and a 2 mile run.

Texas Strong 5k/10k

Get ready for a high energy 5K and 10K that celebrates Texas spirit, strength, and grit. Runners can choose between two distances, with entry fees of $30 for the 5K and $35 for the 10K. Participants receive a custom finisher medal, an event bib, and chip timing. An event shirt is available for those who register by the posted deadline. The experience features a stage and music, and age group awards are presented for both distances. Award categories include 9 and under, 10 to 15, 16 to 20, 21 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and over.

Lunadas del Valle: August: RGV Womens Poets Society at Vellichor

Lunadas del Valle brings an evening of poetry, storytelling, music, and art to Vellichor Books and More in downtown Mission. This edition spotlights select members of the RGV Womens Poets Society as featured readers, with Paola Carrasco as emcee. Each writer will have 7 to 10 minutes to share their work, followed by an open mic, time permitting, with 5 minutes per participant. The featured musician and featured artist will be announced. Presented by the Seven To Eight Poetry Project, the gathering reflects the tradition of the Mexican lunada while adjusting to Rio Grande Valley heat by meeting indoors and at times outdoors. Admission is free, and guests are invited, though not required, to donate new or lightly used books to support Mission’s only independent bookstore.
