At Old Church Winery, the afternoon pairs a hands-on poetry workshop with a featured reading. The workshop is led by Trier Ward, a poet and animal caretaker at a wildlife rescue in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and invites participants to look closely at the native species in their own ecosystems to deepen their connection with nature and fuel new poems. The session includes conversation about animals found in New Mexico and the Rio Grande Valley, time to read animal-themed works, and space to write. The program then shifts to a poetry reading with featured poet Luivette Resto and special guest Amada Puryear El, the poet laureate of Pharr.

Blast Zone (Weekly Smash Ultimate Tournament) @ Kaboom Games - McAllen

A weekly Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tournament hosted by Kaboom Games features bracket play with a $5 venue fee and a $5 entry fee. Side brackets may run before or after the main competition, and friendlies setups sometimes appear for Rivals of Aether 2, Project+, Smash 64 Remix, HDR, or other titles. The first and third Saturday of the month also include a Melee tournament. The first Saturday event is usually called Knock Out FGC Roundup and can include a special side bracket. Tierra y Té : an Earth Day Celebration

Tierra y Té is a two-hour Earth Day experience centered on ritual, movement, creativity, and connection. It opens with a calming tea ritual to help everyone arrive, continues with restorative yoga accompanied by sound healing led by Briza (@the_wet_alchemist), and concludes with a hands-on session with Josué (@fronteraflora) where participants create a seed-filled Earth globe and paint a terracotta pot to take home. The atmosphere encourages reconnection with the body, grounding in the present, and time in intentional community. All supplies are included, it is welcoming to beginners and all levels, and tickets are $33 per person. Parkinson’s Walk & Talk Community Event

Parkinson’s affects about 1.1 million people in the United States, with projections reaching 1.2 million by 2030, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This progressive neurodegenerative disorder results from the loss of brain cells and can disrupt motor control with tremors, muscle rigidity, and slowed movement, as well as cause non-motor symptoms such as cognitive changes, depression, and sleep disturbances. To help raise awareness throughout the Rio Grande Valley, South Texas Health System will host its first annual Parkinson’s Walk & Talk community event during Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month at South Texas Health System Edinburg. The gathering emphasizes the importance of staying active while living with Parkinson’s and offers a welcoming setting where individuals and families can connect, share experiences, and build community. Attendees can explore educational stations led by occupational, physical, and speech therapists who will share practical strategies for managing symptoms and supporting overall quality of life. Vellichor Books and More hosts a poetry-centered gathering presented as part of the 19th Annual Rio Grande Valley International Poetry Festival. The program begins with a Poetic Postcard workshop led by Don Mathis, inviting participants to craft brief pieces that carry vivid, expansive feeling. It then features a reading by Jeff Knorr, author of five poetry collections, including Fire Season from Flowersong Press, The Color of a New Country and Keeper from Mammoth Books, The Third Body from Cherry Grove Collections, and Standing Up to the Day from Pecan Grove Press. His additional publications include Mooring Against the Tide: Writing Poetry and Fiction, the anthology A Writer's Country, and The River Sings: An Introduction to Poetry, all from Prentice Hall. His poems and essays have appeared in journals and anthologies such as Chelsea, Poetry Northwest, New Ohio Review, The Journal, North American Review, Hamilton Stone Review, Barrow Street, and Like Thunder: Poets Respond to Violence in America. He also served as Poet Laureate for the city and county of Sacramento from 2012 to 2016. Expect an intimate bookstore setting that encourages writing, listening, and meaningful connection.

Experience a day of poetry in Edinburg at The Caffeine Library as part of the 19th Annual Rio Grande Valley International Poetry Festival. The program features a workshop led by Susan Beall Summers, followed by a reading with Gustavo Hernandez alongside registered poets. Hernandez is the author of Flower Grand First (Moon Tide Press, 2021) and Bachelor (FlowerSong Press, 2025). He was appointed Poet Laureate of Orange County, California in January 2024, was born in Jalisco, Mexico, and was raised in Santa Ana, California, where he still lives. The event offers an inviting space to learn, share, and celebrate poetry in community, and it is open to the public.

Family Workshop - Rain Barrel Workshop

Celebrate Earth Week with a hands-on family workshop at IMAS that focuses on building a take-home rain barrel. Designed for ages 5 and up, participants will attach spigots, add a mesh leaf screen, and then personalize the barrel with Earth Day inspired artwork. Take part in a Commander tournament at The Pocket using the Bracket 2 EDH ruleset. Entry is $5, the event runs on custom software, and top finishers receive a 125% store credit payout. The banlist follows the official banned and restricted list. Story Time with a Shelter Dog

Spend storytime with a shelter dog, and sometimes a cat, from Mission Animal Shelter while a children’s book is read aloud. This free, drop-in program is open to everyone. During the story, half of all sales are donated to Mission Animal Shelter. The visit gives select dogs a break from the shelter, encourages socialization, and helps highlight adoptable pets looking for permanent homes.

Alma Flamenca

Flamenco comes to life as guitarist Kurt Martinez and percussionist Marco Guerra perform selections from the forthcoming Alma Flamenca recording. Community First Responder Training

RGV CPR offers a hands-on training that helps adults build confidence in emergency response while keeping lifesaving skills accessible. Registered participants who are 18 or older will practice key techniques that include performing CPR, operating an AED, assisting a choking person, controlling severe bleeding with a tourniquet, and using naloxone in the event of an opioid overdose. A complimentary two-dose box of naloxone is provided. Instruction is led by a Texas Registered Nurse who holds CPR and First Aid instructor credentials from the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross. This session is for educational purposes only and does not provide certification, and it is independent of the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross. Anyone needing recognized credentials should pursue an official certification course.

100 Mile CHILD ABUSE Child Abuse Awareness Ride 2026

This 100 mile group ride brings together motorcyclists to raise awareness of child abuse and support the B.A.C.A. Rio Grande Valley mission. Participants gather at JABALI The Bikers Store/Stoggie’s Motorcycle Garage for a relaxed, no-fee ride with a few planned stops, including the Stripes gas station in Rio Grande City and Los Mesquites Biker Bar. The focus is on solidarity, purpose, and amplifying the voices of children who need support. Riders for Christ will be blessing motorcycles.

Young Adventurers - Outdoor Classroom

An outdoor classroom session at IMAS invites young explorers to take a closer look at nature using magnifying lenses. Freddy Gonzalez Legacy Run 5k in Honor of Derek Hernandez

The Freddy Gonzalez Legacy Run 5k at Edinburg Municipal Park honors Lance Corporal Derek Hernandez, a Marine from Edinburg, Texas who was 20 years old. He served with the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, within the 1st Marine Division and I Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Pendleton, California, and lost his life while supporting combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. This run is dedicated to his service and sacrifice.

Tinker Imagineers (2nd-3rd Graders) - IMAS Summer Camp

Geared toward incoming 2nd and 3rd graders, this hands-on experience centers on collaboration, creative thinking, and a variety of design challenges. Participants use everyday materials, with plenty of cardboard, to tinker, test ideas, and build their own prototypes. Projects range from creating a playscape and cars powered by rubber bands to bridge construction, marble runs, and more.

Participants tackle a two day ride from Edinburg to San Antonio, covering up to 260 miles in the South Texas heat. Funds are raised through sponsorships and donations, and all profits support families affected by spina bifida and Spina Bifida Texas.

37th Annual Gala - Benefiting Comfort House

Hosted at McAllen Convention Center, the 37th Annual Gala benefits Comfort House, where each person is known by name and story and end of life care is provided at no cost. This elegant evening raises funds so families can receive compassionate, dignified support in their final days. Community support, including the purchase of gala tables, makes this mission possible and helps keep care free.

Guac & Roll 5K

Retro vibes take center stage at the second annual Guac & Roll 5K, presented by OpenSky Racing. Participants are encouraged to wear 80s-inspired outfits for a high-energy run with music. Each runner receives a custom bib and a finisher medal, and those who register by May 14 receive an event T-shirt. The race includes official chip timing, with awards presented on stage and within age groups. Age group recognitions are planned for 9 and younger, 10 to 15, 15 to 20, 21 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and older.

6th Annual Juneteenth “Perfecting Unity” Celebration

Village in the Valley (ViVa), in partnership with the City of Edinburg Cultural Arts, presents the 6th Annual Juneteenth “Perfecting Unity” Celebration at Edinburg Cultural Arts, honoring the nation’s oldest commemoration of the end of slavery. The program centers on community, culture, and remembrance, and includes a VIP Black Carpet experience. Attendees are encouraged to wear attire that reflects their heritage and personal expression. The event raises funds to support ViVa’s year-round initiatives, with proceeds benefiting the Community Closet for families with urgent needs, Thanksgiving meals for seniors, scholarships for youth, and programming such as the MLK Jr. Day of Service, Black History Month activities, and other cultural and community events. Multiple sponsorship tiers and tickets are available, and the gathering highlights themes of freedom, unity, and lasting legacy.
