Learn how Indigenous communities across Texas and the southern United States drew on native plants for healing in a talk at Mount Pleasant School led by Ricky Linex. The program highlights 45 Texas species, from forbs and shrubs to trees, with an explanation of how each was prepared and the conditions it was used to address. Participants will also be shown research tools that help link particular plants to the tribes that used them. The presentation places this tradition in context by noting how long-standing plant knowledge was often set aside with the rise of synthetic medicines. Ricky Linex retired in 2021 after 38.5 years with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, where he served as a wildlife biologist across 52 counties in north central Texas that include the Rolling Plains, Cross Timbers, Blackland Prairie, and Post Oak Savannah regions. He now works as a range and wildlife consultant and is the author of “Range Plants of North Central Texas, A Land Users Guide to Their Identification, Value and Management,” a Texas plant identification book recognized in 2015 by The Wildlife Society Texas Chapter, the Native Plant Society of Texas, and the Texas Section Society for Range Management. This event is free and open to the public.

Southern Daisy hosts a semi-glitz pageant at Central Christian Church that celebrates confidence, personality, and natural beauty. Contestants participate in Beauty Wear, Theme Wear inspired by All Mixed Up where each person selects a personal theme, and an Outfit of Choice that reflects individual style. Talent is optional. The day flows from registration through judging and a prize drawing, then concludes with crowning. Age divisions are based on age on pageant day and include Infant 0 to 12 months, Baby 13 to 23 months, Tot 24 to 35 months, Toddler 3 to 4, Tiny 5 to 6, Mini 7 to 9, Little 10 to 12, Junior-Teen 13 to 15, Teen 16 to 19, and Ms. 20 and older. Each division competes separately in all categories except People’s Choice, Overall Mega, Overall Ultimate, and Overall Grand. Titles awarded in every age group include Mega, Ultimate, Grand, and Supreme, determined by Beauty Wear scores with ties settled using combined Beauty and Photogenic scores. Additional recognitions in each division include Theme, Outfit of Choice, Talent, and Photogenic, with side awards for Radiant Smile, Dazzling Eyes, Gorgeous Hair, Beautiful Dress, and Miss Personality. Beauty Wear welcomes any formal style dress with no limits on bling or accessories. Age-appropriate makeup is permitted, and hair bows, adornments, wigs, and hairpieces are allowed. Theme Wear follows the All Mixed Up concept, and Outfit of Choice can be any look that showcases personality. For Photogenic, bring one photo for judging. Music is provided, modeling formations are up to each contestant, and dressing rooms are available with access limited to women. People’s Choice goes to the contestant with the most votes, which are $1 each, and the winner receives half of the pot. Overall accolades across all ages include Overall Mega for the highest combined Beauty Wear and Theme Wear score of the day, Overall Ultimate for the second highest, and Overall Grand for the third highest, and these double crowns do not remove winners from their age divisions. The entry fee is $225 and covers Beauty Wear, Theme Wear, Outfit of Choice, Talent, People’s Choice Jackpot, Overall Mega, Overall Ultimate, and all side awards, as well as Photogenic. An afternoon centered on learning, inspiration, and community connection brings local businesses, practitioners, and resources together at North Side Baptist Church to support whole person wellness across physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional health. Hosted by 3 Nurses on a Mission, the expo highlights practical ways for individuals to take charge of their wellbeing through education, lifestyle choices, and holistic approaches that nurture the body’s innate capacity to heal. Attendees can explore holistic health vendors, discover useful educational tools, learn about natural products and services, and connect with practitioners and community businesses in a welcoming, family friendly setting. Vendor opportunities are available for wellness focused businesses, practitioners, nonprofits, educators, artisans, and organizations that align with the mission. Each vendor is required to provide a complimentary educational resource at their booth and may also offer products and services. Accepted participants receive promotion through event marketing and social media, and vendors are encouraged to help spread the word. Submitting an application does not guarantee acceptance, since all entries are reviewed for alignment with the goals of the expo. The event seeks to help build a stronger, healthier, and more informed community.

Food Park Lounge Night 2026 brings a relaxed evening of live music, tasty food, and casual games to Heritage Park Food Park. This edition features Texas Accent Trio on stage.
