Intro to Brazilian Zouk Workshop

Explore Brazilian Zouk in a beginner-friendly, two-hour workshop that introduces the flow, close connection, and expressive head and body movement that define this partner dance. The music spans contemporary and Latin styles, creating a smooth, inviting atmosphere for learning. Guided by instructors Sarah Epling and Emilia Ferme Giralt, you will work on the basics of steps and timing, lead and follow technique, fluid weight transfers, body movement, and your first turns, all with a focus on comfortable, clear connection. No partner or prior experience is required. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes that allow you to spin. All levels are welcome, and partners rotate so everyone practices with multiple people. The workshop takes place at Inspira Dance inside Ballston Quarter, and a class and social hosted by Zouk Fire follow at the same location. Sarah began dancing Brazilian Zouk in 2019 with no previous dance background and has since devoted thousands of hours to developing her skills. She joined District Zouk in 2022 and emphasizes connection, energy management, and body awareness built on solid fundamentals, treating dance as a way to translate inner experience into movement.

The Perfect Figure for $1: Why the Past Was More Body Positive Than We Are

Fashion history expert Emma Rowland leads a lecture on how earlier centuries crafted the ideal silhouette with garments instead of expecting a particular body shape. Drawing from the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, she explores techniques such as padding, boning, stays, flat-front corsets, and well-placed ruffles, and touches on the beginnings of ready-to-wear sizing. The talk connects these historical practices to the way people think about bodies today, offering context for how clothing has long shaped ideas about appearance.

Ohio Players

The Birchmere hosts a night with the Ohio Players, pioneers of street funk and underground R&B whose sound helped define the 1970s and beyond. The current ten piece lineup features three original members, James “Diamond” Williams on drums, Billy Beck on keyboards, and Clarence Willis on lead guitar, and the group continues to play their music live without computers or samplers. Their breakthrough run with Mercury Records delivered consecutive platinum albums including Skin Tight, Fire, and Honey. Hits such as Fire and Love Rollercoaster topped the pop charts, and Funky Worm, Sweet Sticky Thing, Love Rollercoaster, Fire, and Who’d She Coo reached number one on the R&B charts. Across more than a dozen albums, the band earned 14 gold and platinum awards and appeared on national television with figures like Dick Clark, Don Kushner, and David Letterman. Their influence stretches across genres, with music sampled or covered by artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Salt-N-Pepa, Puff Daddy, Sound Garden, Too Short, Paul Jackson Jr., Alex Bugnon, Aaliyah, and Beyoncé, and their story highlighted in films and documentaries like Standing in the Shadows of Motown, Soul Train: The Movie, and Superfly. They have toured the world for decades, drawing large crowds at events from Fourth of July festivities in Louisville to the Carter Barron in Washington, D.C., casino stages, and Indianapolis 500 celebrations. More than fifty years on, they continue to set stages on Fire and ride their own Love Rollercoaster with the melodic grooves that made them legends.

2026 Be the Good 5k/10k

Enjoy a 5k or 10k through Ben Brenman Park in Alexandria on a mostly flat, paved route with views of the pond and the Holmes Run waterway. The course follows the Ben Brenman East layout, and the 10k completes the out and back section twice. This event supports Be the Good, a 501(c)(3) serving the Washington, D.C. region by connecting volunteers with simple, safe ways to help neighbors experiencing hunger, linking efforts like making sandwiches, stocking little free pantries, and packing care kits with schools, community centers, and other frontline partners. The vision is a community working together to feed neighbors and spread goodness. Participants receive chip timing, a technical race shirt, and a finisher medal. A virtual option is available for anyone running remotely. Finishing earns points toward the Year-Long 5k, 10k, and Back of the Pack Series, as well as the Spring Series, and the Back of the Pack program gives similar-paced runners a way to compete for series points. Packet pickup takes place on site, and race-day registration is offered. Shirts are guaranteed for those who register by the stated deadline, with additional shirts available on a first-come, first-served basis afterward. Water stations are positioned on the 10k near miles 1.55, 3.1, and 4.65, and on the 5k near mile 1.55, with sports drink available at some locations. Restrooms are located within the park. Live results are available during the event with instant access via QR code, and final standings with series points are posted afterward. Optional runner tracking can share updates to a participant’s phone and to friends and family. Awards recognize the top three men and women overall, plus first and second in multiple age divisions, and overall winners are not eligible for age group awards. Staff photos are shared on social channels after the race. The Wailin Jennys

The Wailin’ Jennys, featuring Nicky Mehta, Ruth Moody, and Heather Masse, bring three distinct voices that blend into luminous three-part harmony to The Birchmere. What began as a one-time collaboration in a small Winnipeg guitar shop has grown into a widely loved international folk act known for elegant arrangements and heartfelt songs. Their debut full-length, 40 Days, earned a Juno Award for Roots and Traditional Album of the Year and, with frequent appearances on A Prairie Home Companion, helped introduce their sound to audiences across Canada, the United States, and beyond. Firecracker expanded their reach into alt-country, pop, and rock, spent more than a year on the Billboard charts, and garnered both Juno and Folk Alliance recognition. The live release Live at Mauch Chunk Opera House captured the spark of their concerts with tight harmonies, deft musicianship, and playful banter, remaining on the Billboard bluegrass charts for over a year. Bright Morning Stars, created with producer Mark Howard and co-producer David Travers-Smith, wove Americana, pop, and traditional folk and went on to win a Juno. To mark 15 years together, they recorded Fifteen with longtime collaborators Richard Moody and Adam Dobres, a curated set later nominated for a Juno. Currently on tour and road testing new songs for an upcoming studio album, the trio continues to elevate folk-roots music with clarity, warmth, and unforgettable vocal blend.
