Cool the City Tree Giveaway

Southside ReLeaf will provide up to 200 free trees to City of Richmond residents through its Cool the City campaign, focused on easing extreme heat in the neighborhoods that face it most. Planting a tree at home or at a business can cool a block, improve air quality, reduce flooding, and support a healthier, more resilient community. Each household may reserve as many as two trees. Choices will be offered in 2-gallon and 3-gallon containers. Two-gallon trees are typically about 10 inches to roughly 2.5 feet tall, and three-gallon trees are usually around 1 to 3 feet tall. Seedlings will also be available for students, renters, and households without yard space. The giveaway takes place in the parking lot of Liberation Church. Trees should be picked up in person. A small number may be available for walk-ups, but reserving in advance is strongly encouraged. For neighbors with limited mobility or transportation, volunteers can coordinate delivery and planting assistance upon request. Residents who are able to pick up are asked not to request delivery so that support can be prioritized for those with the greatest need. Because this effort addresses the urban heat island effect, first priority goes to Richmond residents in zip codes 23224, 23225, and 23234. Any Richmond resident can submit a request, and remaining trees will be allocated to other city zip codes if supplies allow.

Roots and Grains RVA Grower-Buyer Social

At Studio Two Three, vegetable and grain growers connect directly with the buyers who keep Virginia’s food and grain economy moving. Designed for farms that are organic or considering the transition, and for those looking to scale or tap new market outlets, this social bridges on-farm production with real purchasing needs. The program opens with a buyer panel featuring perspectives from distilling and milling, plus diversified vegetable buying for grocery, food hubs, and wholesale. Panelists include Evrim Dogu of Sub Rosa Bakery and Shelley Sackier of Reservoir Distillery and the Virginia Heritage Grain Project, a board member of Common Grain Alliance. They outline what they look for, the standards and logistics required to sell into their operations, and practical first steps for entering distilleries, mills, groceries, and regional supply chains. After the discussion, the event shifts into an open-floor mixer with food and drink, giving producers time to speak with buyers face to face. All farmers are welcome. The emphasis is on organic production, straightforward conversation, and useful connections, and no pitch decks are needed. Presented by Shalom Farms, the Virginia Association for Biological Farming, Rodale Institute, and Common Grain Alliance.

Our Rogue Fates with Sarah Glenn Marsh

Sarah Glenn Marsh returns for an in-store conversation with Sara Raasch about her new novel, Our Rogue Fates. The book follows former best friends Griff Sayer and Mal Pryce, now at odds, who are swept back into each other’s lives after a job Mal arranged leaves Griff badly hurt and their childhood friend Alys steps in to help. To secure his freedom and protect Griff, Mal accepts a four-week ultimatum to recover an ancient prize hidden in Rotrose Mire, a perilous swamp tied to the disappearance of Alys’s father, Rhun. Guided by Rhun’s map and a broken blade, Mal heads out with Alys and a reluctant, newly single Griff. Along the way they face eerie threats and monstrous dangers, rebuild trust as old feelings resurface, and realize a mysterious figure is tailing them with loyalties to neither their parents’ adversaries nor to would-be heroes. The result is a second-chance, spicy Achillean romance with the adventurous feel of tabletop questing, a fit for fans of Critical Role. Marsh is a devoted fantasy reader whose work spans picture books, middle grade, and young adult, and this novel marks her adult debut. She lives in Richmond, Virginia with her family and a lively collection of pets, including a turtle named Muffin. Raasch is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of multiple books for teens, including the historical romantasy duology Witch and Hunter co-written with Beth Revis, as well as romances for adults.

Horsehead

Experience a dynamic performance from Richmond’s Americana rock band Horsehead, featuring special guest Benjamin Shepherd. This all-ages event is general admission with admission set at $12.50. Recognized by The Auricular for pairing a classic spirit with a contemporary edge and standout musicianship, Horsehead delivers heartfelt hooks, finely crafted instrumentation, and lyrics that resonate. Their album Sundogs Dancing In The Early Morning Light showcases their charismatic, eclectic sound. The lineup includes Jon Brown on vocals and rhythm guitar, Kevin Wade Inge on lead guitar and backing vocals, Steve Chiles on bass, and Ricky Tubb on drums and percussion. Benjamin Shepherd opens the show, bringing songs shaped by a Nashville upbringing and influences that span Pacific Northwest indie rock, 80s post-punk, and mid-century rock and roll. His path has included time between Richmond and New York, tours across the country, and stints in bands such as The Veins, Nervous Ticks, Stake, and Southside Stranglers. His first studio LP, Eleven For The Road, was captured live in a single take at Montrose Recording. He followed with Hold the Line, a full-band album created with Kevin Guild, Tyler Williams, Charlie Glenn, and Adrian Olsen. His third studio album, This Was Supposed to Be Temporary, again features contributions from Guild, Olsen, Glenn, and others. The newest release, Near Future, was recorded in his home studio using Tascam 388 and Ampex 440 tape machines and is available.

After two years of improvements, Maymont’s Virginia Wildlife Trail reopens with refreshed habitats, more accessible pathways, new interpretive signs, and additional viewing spots for the resident animals. The trail serves as a permanent home for rescued and rehabilitated native wildlife, nestled in a forested 40 acre valley in Richmond. Interactive experiences appear at intervals along the route, including presentations at the main stage and near animal habitats, crafts like making animal masks and temporary tattoos, passport activity stations, scavenger hunts, and games. Animal enrichment sessions are scheduled across the day with bears, raptors, a bobcat, bison, otters inside The Robins Nature Center, a fox, porcupines, and elk and sika deer. Activities take place all along the Virginia Wildlife Trail within Maymont, with convenient access from Maymont Farm or The Robins Nature Center and all entrances open. & Juliet

Instead of a tragic finale, she sets out for a fresh start, pursuing life and love on her own terms. The story bursts to life with chart-topping pop anthems, including Since U Been Gone, Roar, Baby One More Time, Larger Than Life, That’s The Way It Is, and Can’t Stop the Feeling, crafted by the songwriter and producer with more number-one hits this century than any other artist.
