Central Skagit LibraryIris DeMent
Iris DeMent brings her singular voice and celebrated songwriting to the Historic Lincoln Theatre, drawing from hymns, gospel, folk, and old-time country traditions. Respected by peers including John Prine, Emmylou Harris, and Rodney Crowell, she has earned two Grammy nominations and received the Americana Music Association’s Trailblazer Award. Her 1992 debut, Infamous Angel, was singled out by Rolling Stone as a defining album of the 1990s, NPR has praised her as one of the great voices in contemporary popular music, and The Boston Globe lauded her 2012 release Sing The Delta for its grace and power. Her latest album, Workin’ On A World, confronts the challenges of today, from climate change and pandemic loss to violence and social injustice, while calling for compassion across differences. The record appeared on NPR’s Top 50 Albums of 2023, and its title track earned Song of the Year at the 2024 International Folk Music Awards, with additional acclaim from outlets such as Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, The New York Times, The New Yorker, and No Depression. Special guest Ana Egge appears as a singer-songwriter and apprentice luthier from Brooklyn, performing with the handmade guitar she built and a catalog that includes 13 studio albums. Her music is noted for honesty, vulnerability, and beauty. Born in Canada and raised in North Dakota, she has toured extensively in North America and Europe, is the subject of the documentary Bright Shadow, has been featured by Billboard, Rolling Stone, and NPR, and has been likened by Lucinda Williams to a folk-inspired Nina Simone.
