Trees take center stage in this six-week, in-person painting course at Westminster Presbyterian Church, designed for artists working in oil, acrylic, or gouache. Rather than treating foliage as background, participants learn to observe and portray trees as expressive subjects with distinct structure and character. Each session runs two hours and blends art history insights, live demonstrations, and guided studio time with hands-on feedback. Between meetings, weekly technique videos and at-home assignments help reinforce new skills. The curriculum covers the anatomy of trees for accurate, lively depictions, studies from master works to learn time-tested methods, and practical approaches for evergreens, deciduous species, and uniquely shaped specimens. Instruction focuses on simplifying complexity, strengthening observational habits, refining brushwork, and developing convincing color. Participants practice mixing natural, vibrant greens and using light and shadow to create depth and form. By the end, artists leave with greater confidence painting trees within their landscapes, along with a small collection of completed pieces and focused studies.

Olympia Family TheaterOra Cogan and more
Capcity Presents brings Ora Cogan and Precious Bane to Wild Child for an all-ages concert. Advance admission is $15, which comes to $17.34 with fees, and tickets are $20 on the day of the show. Ora Cogan’s path has been shaped by a creative upbringing on a Salish Sea island, with a photojournalist father and a mother who was both a musician and a studio co-owner. She apprenticed in silversmithing at 15, then spent time touring through Europe and the United States while immersing herself in underground music. In Vancouver she gravitated to noise and experimental circles, taught herself the fiddle, toured in a drone folk duo, and collaborated widely, always shifting her approach. A canoe trip with friends from the Heiltsuk Nation prompted a pause from music while she devoted years to environmental justice and later to human-rights focused photojournalism. After her father’s passing she moved to Nanaimo, B.C., where she built a studio and began working with Finn Smith, Nancy Pittet, and Kristopher Bowering, who now form her band. After releasing Formless in 2023, she spent a winter writing the songs that became Hard Hearted Woman. Shaped by cold-water plunges, river swims, late-night conversations about art and politics, and long drives through the Lillooet region, the album was recorded with David Parry at Dream Club in Victoria, in her Nanaimo studio, and remotely with Tom Deis, alongside her band and guests from country and experimental backgrounds. It reflects themes of resilience, community, and staying open in a complicated world.

At The United Churches of Olympia, all three of Edvard Grieg’s violin sonatas are presented in a single program, each interpreted by a different duo from around Washington. The sonatas are shared among three pairs: Amy Dodds with Jonathan Spatola-Knoll, Luke Fitzpatrick with Laure Struber, and Svend Rønning with Lisa Bergman. The program features Violin Sonata No. 1 in F major, Op. 8 (1865), Violin Sonata No. 2 in G major, Op. 13 (1867), and Violin Sonata No. 3 in C minor, Op. 45 (1887). Admission is free with a suggested donation, and RSVPs are recommended. The performance runs about 90 minutes with a brief intermission. This season is supported in part by 4Culture, the City of Bellevue, and ArtsFund, with free and reduced access supported by 4Culture, and the Seattle concert is presented in collaboration with the Swedish Club of Seattle.

Great Bend closes its 2025-26 season with I Was a Stranger, a reflective program centered on mercy, grief, and the welcome we extend to one another. The performance takes place at First United Methodist Church of Olympia. It opens with Samuel Barber’s Agnus Dei, a choral reimagining of his Adagio for Strings that shapes its familiar ache into a plea for peace and forgiveness. From that quiet center, Andrey Stolyarov’s Out of the Depths gives voice to Psalm 130 and to music shaped by personal loss, moving from lament toward hope. The finale is John Muehleisen’s Borders, an expansive multicultural cantata commissioned by Great Bend for the Chorale’s 2019 Carnegie Hall debut. This American Prize winning work begins with a traditional Salish welcome and interweaves folk melodies from around the world with poetry by Emma Lazarus, Brian Bilston, and Alberto Ríos. Heard together, these pieces form a narrative that encourages seeing the stranger not as other, but as kin.
First United Methodist Church of OlympiaCosmic Kitten at Wild Child (Olympia, WA)
CapCity Presents hosts Cosmic Kitten at Wild Child for a charged set rooted in an electrified mix of alternative, post-grunge and punk. The San Pedro quartet formed in 2016 and channels raw emotion through ferocious performances and reflective songwriting. Jay Vesper lays down nimble bass lines that hold everything in place, while John Chavez adds heft with muscular rhythm guitar. Together they fuse 90s-grunge grit with modern rock urgency. The band has released five full-length records. Highlights include You Gotta Understand, tracked with Ulysses Noriega, whose credits include The Offspring’s Smash, and Laugh of a Lifetime from 2023, recorded by Pedro Mancillas and Steve Moriarty of The Gits and mastered by Jack Endino, producer of Nirvana’s Bleach. They have shared bills with Redd Kross, The Dickies, Alice Bag, Avengers and Mike Watt, and have self-booked tours across the US and UK. Their self-titled fifth album, the first on San Francisco label Psyched! Records, explores themes of existential weight, emotional numbness, the fallout of personal choices, and using anger as fuel to push through adversity. Work on the record began after the single Your Insult in 2024. The sessions brought in producer Alex Edkins of METZ and engineer Ben Greenberg of Uniform for a focused week at Kingsize Soundlabs in Los Angeles, with a mix by Graham Walsh and mastering once again by Jack Endino.
