🌿 Medicine Drum Building Workshop & Ceremony with Fronterhouse Drums 🥁🔥

A sacred day of hands-on drum building and ceremony led by Fronterhouse Drums, centered on creativity, intention, healing, and community. Under this guidance, participants craft a personal medicine drum while honoring tradition, the land, and the purpose they bring to the process. Drawing on years of spiritual study and healing work, Fronterhouse Drums highlights how the drum’s low, steady resonance can support meditation, self-awareness, emotional healing, and a deeper connection with spirit, self, and the natural world. Each attendee receives a kit that includes a willow hoop, a buffalo rawhide drumhead, and rawhide lacing, along with time to personalize and decorate the instrument. The day unfolds as ceremony, beginning with introductions and a fire, then moving into selecting materials, decorating hoops, punching hides, and lacing drums. If time allows, a mallet is made before a closing song circle. Hot tea and snacks are provided, and an organic vegetarian lunch is included, with an optional potluck contribution for those with specific dietary needs or preferences. Participants are encouraged to bring an altar item that embodies their prayer or intention, which is returned at the end of the day. A wooden stick, pinecone, or other burnable offering is welcome for the fire ceremony. Comfortable clothing suitable for Pacific Northwest weather is recommended. This is an all-day ceremonial experience devoted to sacred craft, so allow unhurried time for the creation of each drum to unfold naturally. Drum and song circles interweave pagan, folk, native, and contemporary traditions to create a welcoming space for healing, self-discovery, and connection.

Boundary Bay Brewery returns to Taproom at Bayview Corner for a brewers night tap takeover. Over the last year, the original owners retired and passed the brewery to a young couple. To keep favorite beers available during a move, the new team arranged for Black Raven Brewing to brew the original recipes while they set up a new nanobrewery and refreshed their food and cocktail offerings. They are opening a new spot on State St in Bellingham. This gathering highlights their ongoing transition and celebrates their return to the Taproom.

Joys of Plein Air Painting in Watercolor Workshop with Geoff Allen

Explore plein air watercolor with Geoff Allen while learning to capture the moment, color, and mood of Whidbey Island. The workshop emphasizes essential techniques that help you work faster, paint with more freedom, and achieve stronger results outdoors. Each day features focused practice on moisture control in paper, managing paint mixtures on the brush, and timing your applications to create the effects you intend. Geoff discusses brush choices and color palettes, encourages letting the water lead, and demonstrates approaches that simplify complex scenes while elevating design, expression, and atmosphere. One day is devoted to classroom instruction, followed by two days painting on location. Throughout, participants build a foundation around four key skills—values, major shapes, visual dynamics, and calligraphic marks. Individual follow ups reinforce concepts like judging value, separating light and shadow, making confident single-pass strokes, and softening edges to produce an expressive, impressionistic watercolor.

Friends and Neighbors: A Musical Address in Old Vienna

At St. Augustine's in the Woods Episcopal Church, this concert traces a musical path to 18th-century Vienna through the story of one remarkable residence, the Grosses Michaelerhaus. Under a single roof, neighbors shaped one another's art, and the program reflects that exchange with music linked to Nicola Porpora, the renowned Italian teacher, a young Joseph Haydn who worked and played for Porpora in return for instruction, Marianna Martines, a gifted composer and keyboard player who lived in the building and studied with both, and W. A. Mozart, a frequent guest and friend. The performance honors how proximity, mentorship, and friendship can spark cultural change, placing the often overlooked Martines alongside her celebrated contemporaries to reveal the breadth of the Viennese spirit. Inspired by a house once filled with salons and corridors of sound, this gathering offers chamber music that blends elegance with storytelling and a sense of connection, echoing the creative community found on Whidbey Island.

Artist Richard Kochenash leads a hands-on workshop devoted to painting flowers with freshness and clarity. The focus moves beyond basic drawing, values, and edges, encouraging loose gesture, energetic marks, quick yet intentional decisions, and the challenge of portraying light as it glows through petals and softens shadows. Color is approached through layered applications that visually blend into a radiant result. The workshop opens with a demonstration in which Richard shares his process, explaining choices in composition, how to structure a workflow, and how to choose suitable paints. He also shows how specialized tools and materials can shape floral forms through techniques like lifting, scraping, painting, and wiping.
