Antiques Appraisal

The Rhinelander District Library hosts an antiques and collectibles appraisal led by author and antiques expert Mark F. Moran in the library meeting room. Appraisals are free, and pre-registration is required for anyone bringing items. Spectators are welcome to listen as Moran discusses each piece. To reserve a spot, call the library at 715-365-1070 ext. 2. Moran brings extensive experience, including work as a former senior editor for Antiques and Collectibles Books at Krause Publications and as a contributor to Antique Trader. He has edited Antique Review East, produced the Atlantique City antique show in Atlantic City, and served as editorial director for F+W Media’s Antiques Group. He appeared as a guest expert on PBS’s Antiques Roadshow for nine seasons and has written or co-written more than 25 books, including multiple editions of Warman’s Antiques & Collectibles. He has bought and sold antiques for more than three decades with a focus on vintage folk art, Americana, and fine art, and has appraised antiques and fine art for over 20 years. Items commonly evaluated include Americana, fine art, small furniture, ceramics, glass, vintage photographs, advertising pieces, folk art, toys, metalware, costume jewelry, musical instruments, antique and vintage lighting, books, and sports memorabilia. Some items are not accepted, including weapons such as swords and knives, traps, Nazi memorabilia, coins and paper currency, fine jewelry with precious gemstones, and Beanie Babies. Folding knives that feature advertising may be considered. If an object category is not listed, advance questions can help determine suitability. Examples include Asian and tribal works, ancient artifacts, fossils and minerals, automotive items, nautical and military pieces, records, and older tools or technology such as typewriters, cameras, machinery, or scientific instruments like sextants, telescopes, and microscopes. When in doubt, an email inquiry can often clarify. Opinions of value provided at this event are informal and are not valid for insurance or charitable donation purposes, which require a certified appraisal. For additional questions, contact Mark F. Moran at 715-281-5060 or moranm1953@gmail.com.

Benefit LOD Potluck

This benefit supports Jess as she faces serious health challenges. After a period of managing anemia, a sudden decline led to an ER visit where she was found to be in shock from significant blood and fluid loss and received two units of blood. Follow-up care has outlined multiple procedures, including a hysterectomy, and an ultrasound identified a 6 cm mass, which may keep her out of work for several months. Plans for the day include a dart tournament with a $15 entry fee, with a portion of each entry going to the benefit and additional contributions from the bar. Raffles and a 50/50 drawing are also part of the event, along with a potluck. Anyone wishing to bring a dish can add their name to the sign-up sheet at Moonlighting.

A Survey of Natural History Wood Engravings

Part of ArtStart’s summer series celebrating wood engraving, this public lecture features Sarah Finn, Special Collections Librarian at Milwaukee Public Library. Under the title A Survey of Natural History Wood Engravings, Finn explores the longstanding relationship between the medium and the natural world. She follows the thread from Thomas Bewick’s influential late eighteenth century volumes A General History of Quadrupeds and A History of British Birds to the nineteenth century flourishing of illustrated print culture, when wood engraving became the leading method for image reproduction. The talk offers an approachable, visually engaging look at how this craft shaped the way generations encountered nature on the printed page. The lecture takes place at The Hilgermann Center in downtown Rhinelander. Finn holds an MLIS with an archival focus and a History MA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and she curates the Instagram account @romanceofbooks, followed by over 137,000 people for its celebration of natural history imagery in historic books. Admission is free and open to the public.

2026 Long Lake 4th of July Boat Parade

A beloved Long Lake tradition fills the water with color as festively decorated boats cruise by to celebrate creativity, music, flags, lake life, and American pride. The parade stages on the north side of the lake near HoneyRock Camp, then moves counter clockwise along the west side, rounds the point, and officially concludes at the channel to Planting Ground. After the finish, boats are encouraged to continue a full lap to keep the festivities alive around the shoreline. The Most Patriotically Decorated Boat Award invites big ideas and bold displays, from flags and inflatables to costumes, patriotic music, and playful Northwoods energy. Larger and more imaginative designs are encouraged. A candy tossing tradition adds to the fun. If handing out treats, use items that float rather than sink. Past approaches have included sealing candy in air-filled zipper bags, using long buckets on poles, floating tosses, or carefully managed slingshots. Spectators can watch from docks or enjoy the view from the water. Because public shoreline viewing on Long Lake is limited, visitors from nearby lakes are encouraged to anchor their boats and take in the show from the lake. No sign up is required, and participants can meet at the staging area on the north side of the lake to take part. It is all about boats, bald eagles, and lake life, wrapped in red, white, and blue spirit.

Downtown Minocqua celebrates Independence Day with classic small-town fun. The festivities begin with a kiddie parade with no pre-registration required, and children can gather near Redman Realty to take part. Bikes, trikes, wagons and strollers are welcome when decorated in patriotic colors, and motorized vehicles are not allowed in this parade. The main procession then heads out from the visitors center and travels north on Hwy 51 through the heart of downtown. Later, the Min-Aqua Bats present a special water ski show at the Aqua Bowl on Lake Minocqua, continuing a tradition of free summer performances that spans more than fifty years. Once darkness falls, a fireworks display caps the celebration. Anyone who can see Minocqua’s blue water tower will have a view of the show. CULTURE TALKS: The Principles and Science of an Urban Food Forest

Part of Culture Talks’ spring and summer series exploring the world around us, this program looks at how edible forest gardens can flourish in urban settings. Hosted at The Hilgermann Center, it features Rhinelander’s City Forester, Tom Jerow, who will begin with an overview of the city’s urban forestry program, then delve into the design and ecology of an urban food forest, a permaculture approach that mirrors a natural woodland while producing food. He will also share how the city is establishing a public food forest with support from a USDA Forest Service grant administered through the Wisconsin DNR, along with ideas for adapting these principles to a small backyard. Jerow brings 34 years of experience with the Wisconsin DNR and holds a degree in soil science from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The talk is free and open to the public and includes a Q&A. The Driftless Revelers at the Town Pump, Rhinelander

Town Pump hosts the return of The Driftless Revelers for a lively night of offbeat string-band roots and freak folk. Formed during the second spring of the 21st century’s first global pandemic, this Eau Claire, Wisconsin group blends a love for early 20th century shellac-era sounds with the exploratory spirit of 1960s and 1970s American freak-folk. Since their 2021 debut tour, they have traveled widely across the Upper Midwest and West Coast, sharing stages with figures like Tim O’Brien, the Gibson Brothers, and Larry Stephenson, alongside artists including Big Richard, The Stillhouse Junkies, Willy Tea Taylor, The Pine Box Boys, The Montvales, Joseph Huber, Davey Allen and the Midnights, and Dig Deep, with spotlight sets at gatherings such as The Good Luck Campout, The Sol Grass Music Festival, Flatrock Bluegrass Jamboree, Mile of Music in Appleton, and The Midsummer in the Northwoods Bluegrass Festival. Known for irreverent humor, original songs, and a Midwest twist on American roots, their onstage banter and spirited sets have drawn comparisons to Ween, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, They Might Be Giants, Tenacious D, Cheech and Chong, and the Holy Modal Rounders. The band’s recordings include American Fork Standards from 2022, Live at the Slowpoke Lounge and Cabaret from 2024, and In the Kitchen with the Driftless Revelers from 2025, the first album they toured nationally. At Town Pump, expect original songwriting from Ben Nelson, Matthew R. Sayles, and Jerod Kaszynski, wah-inflected banjo, resonator steel guitar, and upright bass pulsing through early blues and jazz roots, hillbilly string-band shouts, and a sound that lives somewhere between folk and psychedelia. The night builds with joy, keeps feet moving to a cosmic rhythm, and lingers long after the final note fades.

Snowshoe Baseball: Lake Tomahawk Snowhawks vs. Dazzle's Demons

Experience a one-of-a-kind matchup as the Lake Tomahawk Snowhawks take on their longtime rivals, Dazzle’s Demons from Rhinelander, in a free, family-friendly game played the local way… 16-inch softball, no gloves, snowshoes on every player, and a field covered in wood shavings. This showdown is Game 6 of 11 in the Snowhawks’ 65th season, adding another chapter to a rivalry that has stretched for more than two decades. Expect a big crowd, with bleachers filling quickly; lawn chairs are welcome along the first and third base lines and behind the right field fence. The 7th Annual Home Run Derby features talent from across the league, and before the final round two fans will get a chance to swing in snowshoes. Concessions include brats, burgers, drinks, and their signature homemade pies, which can sell out quickly. Proceeds from this game support a club and cause listed as TBD, and popcorn sales benefit the Lake Tomahawk Volunteer Fire Department. A 50/50 winner is announced after the third inning, with additional raffle prizes in the seventh thanks to local sponsors. Team gear will be available, with Snowhawks merchandise behind home plate to support fan-experience and seating improvements. Dazzle’s Demons apparel is slated for pre-order with pickup before the game, benefiting three causes tied to their 2026 fundraising initiative. An After Glow gathering is planned at a nearby bar noted as TBD, offering a chance to mingle with players and fans. Games are rarely called off and typically proceed unless the field is unplayable or there is persistent heavy rain or lightning.
