📰 In the news
Behind the new byline: Atticus Hempel has joined the Juneau Empire staff, bringing East Coast roots and Swarthmore studies to cover Juneau news, after studying at Tidelines Institute in Gustavus — get to know Atticus Hempel.
Arctic operations gearing up: The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Waesche made a logistics stop in Juneau as it prepares for a Bering Sea patrol focused on fisheries enforcement, with search and rescue if needed — get all the details.
Carrying a legacy forward: Following Alaska’s celebration of Elizabeth Peratrovich Day, Juneau author Ernestine Hayes says the civil rights icon’s work remains unfinished and urges continued action and greater recognition of Alaska Native leadership — read why the work continues.
Seasonal highlights and happenings: Across Alaska, the Legendary Ice Park has opened with world class carving, UAS held its Polar Plunge in Juneau, Soldotna is offering grants, and Alaska Children’s Trust named Tory Houser — check out the full roundup.
Gold & silver are hot: Coming off gold’s best year since 1979, the momentum is carrying well into 2026 with silver remaining one of the most talked-about assets. Curious why precious metals are back in focus? American Hartford Gold has a free guide that explains what’s happening and how people are approaching it today. It’s free – and definitely worth a read.
Compare rates for free: The national average for car insurance is around $175 per month. Paying more than that? Same, so I did some shopping around and ended up cutting my premium in half. If you haven’t checked in a while, you’re probably overpaying too — here’s the comparison tool I used.
Nothing prepares you for a pet emergency: I learned that the hard way after charging $10k to a credit card for life-saving surgery on my cat, Miss Stache. As soon as we got home, I signed up for Spot. It’s super affordable – and reimburses up to 90% of the bill.

Highlights this week:

🫶 We got your back
Maritime EV safety upgrades: After Alaska Marine Lines stopped shipping electric vehicles last year over battery fire risks, AML and Alaska Marine Highway System officials discussed safer options at a Renewable Juneau panel. AML has hired a vessel firefighter and added thermal cameras and powerful sprayers. More cameras and in-transit battery temperature monitoring are planned. Get all the safety details.
What it means for hikers: Earlier this month, the US Forest Service canceled plans for a new public-use cabin near Herbert Glacier, citing the tough site and limited staffing. The move was not tied to mining. Instead, the agency will reroute part of Herbert Glacier Trail and add a scenic overlook. See what’s planned now.
Alaskan flavors, Italian soul: In Bocca Al Lupo celebrates Juneau’s seasons with handmade pasta, wood-fired pies, and smart rotating plates that highlight the day’s catch and produce. Easy for a Tuesday, lively for date night, it lets local ingredients do the talking while you relax with something comforting and bright.
Upgrade your kitchen game: BUNKHAUS stocks a tight pantry lineup: bar tools, cookbooks, and actually useful kitchen accessories, plus locally made end-grain cutting boards from Stonefist Woodworks. It’s the kind of place where a casual browse becomes a quiet “how did I live without this?” moment.
What do people see when they search your name? Search results can surface past mistakes or outdated information that no longer reflects who you are. BetterReputation helps remove and clean up unwanted content so your online presence matches your real life today. Not worried about yourself? Doesn’t hurt to mention it to family or friends who might be.
Take control of your credit card debt: High interest can keep you stuck paying more than you need to. A balance transfer card with 0% intro APR until 2027 and no annual fee gives you time to pay down what you owe without interest working against you. By transferring your balance, more of your payment goes toward the principal so you can actually make a dent in what you owe.
