A touch rugby gathering organized by Juneau Rugby Club focuses on fitness, teamwork, discipline, family, boldness, and fun. Play is noncontact, avoiding tackles and heavy hits, which keeps the action quick and competitive while emphasizing a welcoming community vibe. Beginners and experienced players alike can learn the game easily, stay active, and connect with others. The aim is to build something enjoyable, competitive, and positive for Juneau. At the Juneau Arts and Culture Center, pianist Dr. Matthew Odell presents a recital that brings together classical favorites and contemporary works. The program includes Haydn’s Sonata No. 61 in D major, Hob. XVI:51 with movements Andante and Finale, Presto; Ravel’s Jeux d’eau; Nadia Boulanger’s Vers la vie nouvelle; and Chris Rogerson’s Til it was dark from 2010 with the movements Break, "Three more minutes!", and Important Things. It concludes with Brahms’s Sonata No. 1 in C major, Op. 1, comprising Allegro, Andante, Scherzo, Allegro molto e con fuoco with piu mosso, and Finale, Allegro con fuoco. Odell has appeared as a soloist, with orchestra, and in chamber settings, with performances at Carnegie Hall’s Weill and Zankel halls, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, the 92nd Street Y, the Kennedy Center, and St Martin-in-the-Fields, as well as at festivals in the United States, Europe, and Asia. He often premieres new music and has worked with composers including Pierre Boulez, John Corigliano, Ned Rorem, Mark Adamo, Michel Merlet, and Robert Aldridge. His recordings include Connections: The Piano Music of Olivier Messiaen and His Students on Albany Records and chamber releases on Centaur and MSR. He teaches at The Juilliard School and frequently leads master classes and lectures, following doctoral studies at Juilliard and additional training at the Peabody Conservatory, Bob Jones University, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and the Aspen Music School.

Celebrate the solstice with a 5k or 1 mile fun run centered at Centennial Hall Convention Center, created for families, friends, and running partners who want a lively night of movement. Creativity is encouraged with prizes for standout costumes, both for groups and for individuals. Check-in and in-person registration take place inside Centennial Hall, followed by a costume contest, and registration wraps up before the start of the race. The 1 mile route is an out-and-back from Centennial Hall along Glacier Hwy. The 5k begins at Centennial Hall, passes Cope Park, continues through the Behrends, turns onto Glacier Hwy, then heads back along Glacier Hwy to finish at Centennial Hall. A small supply of event shirts is available for $20. Entry fees range from $15 to $40, and there is no JTRR member discount for this fundraiser. Meet at Sunny Drive’s west end facing the airport rather than downtown. Use Old Glacier Highway to reach Sunny Drive, as it is not accessible from Egan Drive. The outing explores Sunny Point on the SE AK Land Trust, also known as SEALTrust, parcel at the end of Sunny Drive. Rubber boots are suggested. This event is free. Western End of Sunny DriveCOED SUPER DRAFT TOURNAMENT
In this coed super draft tournament, players register as individual free agents and are placed onto teams through a snake style draft. In this format, team managers draw draft positions, then alternate selections in a serpentine order until all players are chosen. Team managers are needed, and scouting and strategy matter when balancing top picks with positional and offensive needs. Participants should be available for the full weekend. A registration deadline applies, and a waitlist may be used if demand exceeds available spots after registration closes. The player draft will be held at a location to be announced. The event blends competition with camaraderie, welcoming those chasing a championship as well as anyone hoping to make new friends.
Dimond ParkDouglas Lawson Creek Community Volunteers Restoration Day
A community workday at the historic Douglas Island Lawson Creek Cemeteries focuses on thoughtful care and access improvements ahead of the Fourth of July. Organized with the Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 2 Juneau, this ongoing volunteer effort began in 2021 and enters its fifth year of stewardship. Participants will help trim vegetation, cut back overgrowth, clear fallen branches, gather brush into piles for removal, and reopen pathways to historic graves so markers once hidden by plants can be seen and visited more easily. Volunteers can also photograph graves and upload them to the Find a Grave website to support historical records for families and researchers. Donations of small American flags are requested for placement throughout the grounds in advance of the holiday. With roughly 500 resting places, contributions of any amount are appreciated, and flags will be placed first in the Native section, where work traditionally begins. For safety, parking is requested near the retaining wall to keep traffic moving. Dress for the weather and bring water and a snack. A limited number of tools will be available, and bringing weed whackers, rakes, loppers, or other garden tools is helpful. Individuals, families, youth groups, church groups, and anyone interested in caring for these historic resting places are welcome.

The next Walk Southeast group hike, sponsored by Undisclosed Excursions, offers a chance to log a few miles toward the trek to Ketchikan. This free program welcomes Patrick Bringley to Juneau for a talk rooted in All the Beauty in the World, his New York Times bestselling account of a decade spent safeguarding the galleries of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He will share insights from that time and how daily encounters with masterpieces shaped his life, the same story that inspired the City Museum exhibition Slow Beauty. The book was named among the year’s best by the New York Public Library, the Financial Times, Audible, the Sunday Times of London, and others, and it has reached readers around the world with translations from Brazil to Ukraine to South Korea, where it rose to number one nationally. Take on 26.2 or 13.1 miles at the USATF-certified Juneau Marathon and Half Marathon on a sea-level out and back course along the two-lane Douglas Highway in Juneau, Alaska. Runners pass mountains, glaciers, forest, and ocean scenery along the way. The start and finish are near the picnic shelter at Sandy Beach in Douglas. Marathoners cover 13.1 miles out and the same distance back, while half marathoners run 6.55 miles out before turning around. The program charts a musical journey that spans the Sahara and Mongolian steppes, the mountains of the Balkans and the Caucasus, and the shores of the Pacific and the Mediterranean. With the help of a loop pedal and other electronics, he transforms the sound of a single cello into a richly layered ensemble that unifies a wide range of global traditions. Alongside original instrumental pieces, Maksin draws from a repertoire of more than 300 songs in 43 languages, including French, Italian, Navajo, Farsi, Bosnian, Turkish, Arabic, Ukrainian, Yiddish, Ladino, Spanish, Catalan, Greek, Georgian, Armenian, Hindi, and Nepali. Admission is 35 dollars for adults, 20 dollars for students with ID, and 15 dollars for children ages 8 to 17. Recommended for ages 8 and up.

Three days of live tattooing come to Elizabeth Peratrovich Hall for the 4th annual Juneau Tattoo Expo, presented by Ink Masters Tattoo Show. As many as 50 award-winning artists will be tattooing on site, offering styles that span realism, traditional, new school, black and gray, and vibrant color. Tickets are sold only at the door, with single-day admission at $15 and a weekend pass covering all three days for $20. Throughout the event, free raffle giveaways will total $1,200 in tattoo work, with two free tattoos awarded each day and redeemable with participating artists of your choice. Winners must be present, and anyone receiving tattoos or entering the raffle must be 18 or older with a valid ID. The expo welcomes attendees of every age, and minors must attend with an adult. Admission is free for ages 15 and under.
