The Great Downtown Book Move

Downtown Dothan partners with Downtown Books on a community effort to move the bookstore into its new home. People will line the sidewalks to form a human chain, passing books from the current shop to the space across the street. The occasion includes pizza for volunteers, music from a live DJ, prize drawings, and games and activities at Waddlington Park. Participation is open to teens, families, civic groups, and community members of all ages, whether for a short time or the whole event. High school students can earn up to three hours of community service credit, with two hours for volunteering and an extra hour when a parent or guardian helps alongside them. The move celebrates literacy, supports a local business, and highlights the community spirit that makes downtown special as the bookstore begins a new chapter.

Summer Junior Golf Clinics (June 22-24, 2026)

Young golfers ages 6 to 18 can build skills with PGA-certified instructors at Highland Oaks in Dothan, Alabama. This three day clinic begins with an introduction to the coaches and the game’s foundations, including etiquette, sportsmanship, keeping score, and the mechanics of a full swing. The second day reinforces those fundamentals and adds friendly competitions so participants can put new knowledge into action. The final day features three holes on the course alongside coaches, with players divided into two evenly matched teams for a head-to-head contest and a prize for the winners announced during the clinic. The fee is $200 and includes daily instruction, snacks, and lunch each day.

Aspiring cartoonists ages 12 to 15 can immerse themselves in a week-long camp focused on sequential storytelling. Drawing inspiration from professional comic artists and writers, campers create small planning sketches, build original characters, and shape engaging plots that lead to completed pieces. Everyone at a table must use the same year’s card, so groups should share the provided set or bring matching cards of their own. Monthly Puzzle Swap

A monthly jigsaw puzzle swap takes place at the Main Library on the last Friday of each month. Participants may bring any number of puzzles to exchange, and they are welcome to trade one, two, three, or more. Puzzles of many sizes are accepted, including 100, 200, 300, 500, and 1000 pieces or larger. Items can be previously used but should be in good condition with every piece accounted for. Downtown Dothan is preparing a large scale America 250 celebration with musical performances, a range of food options from vendors, family friendly activities and games, and a nighttime drone display that will illuminate the sky. It is billed as one of the biggest gatherings the downtown area has ever hosted. Further information will be announced soon. The festivities salute 250 years of freedom, pride, and community.

Yoga in the Garden

Now in its fifth year, Yoga in the Garden offers a six-week foundations series led by Val with a focus on supporting the nervous system. Participants receive resources to continue the work between sessions, including videos, guided meditations, breathwork practices, and meal plan guidance to help define a personal approach to health. Sessions take place at Dothan Nurseries Greenhouse, Gardens, and Gifts in the back pavilion, which is reached by turning right at the entrance. Dog Man-ia!

A Dog Man themed celebration filled with silly fun and lots of laughs for children and their grown-ups. This program is designed for children ages 6 to 12. Advance registration is required. Register each child in the child’s own name to participate and enter the program room, and a parent or caregiver must remain in the room throughout. A valid DHCLS library card is needed to sign up; have the card number that begins with 21744 and the associated four-digit PIN ready. You may register two children with a single adult card, or use the child’s own card. Please arrive on time, as unclaimed spots may be released to the waitlist. If your plans change, cancel your reservation in advance so another family can take the spot.

Step into the concert fans never saw. Trial By Fire, a tribute to Journey, brings to life the 1996 Trial by Fire tour that was planned but never realized. That year, Journey reunited with Steve Perry and released Trial by Fire, their first album together in a decade. Plans for a worldwide run ended when Perry was injured, leaving a missing chapter in rock history. This show imagines how that tour could have looked and sounded, capturing the setlist, energy, and spectacle with songs from the Trial by Fire album alongside beloved classics from the Steve Perry era.

Summer Junior Golf Clinics (July 13-15, 2026)

Young golfers ages 6 to 18 can develop skills at summer junior golf clinics led by PGA-certified professionals at Highland Oaks in Dothan, Alabama. Each clinic spans three days, beginning with an introduction to on-course manners, sportsmanship, how to keep score, and a welcoming chance to meet the coaching team, along with fundamentals of a full swing. The second day builds on swing technique with a brief review and adds friendly contests so participants can apply what they have learned. The final day takes everyone onto the course for three holes alongside their coaches, with two balanced teams facing off in a short match and a prize for the winners announced during the clinic. The Circle Sessions

Back at the historic Dothan Opera House, this showcase blends original songs, personal stories, and a friendly contest that spotlights singer-songwriters from across the country. Presented by Mitchell Automotive with support from Visit Dothan, Durden Outdoors, Wiregrass Wealth and Management, Tixr, and Adventureland, it has grown into a leading platform for emerging talent in the Wiregrass. Participation is limited to solo acts and duos, with no more than two performers on stage. From the applicant pool, six artists will advance to the finals before a live audience, competing for career-boosting awards that include $2,000 for first place, $1,000 for second, professional development opportunities, and performance slots at the Porter Park Amphitheater. Applications are open, and the intimate setting in Downtown Dothan creates a close connection between performers and listeners.
