Hillbillies Everywhere: The Evolution of the Ozarker Image

Explore how the Ozarks came to be associated with labels like hillbillies and moonshiners, and consider how people from the region have understood themselves across generations. Historian Jared Phillips of the University of Arkansas leads a conversation that traces the roots of these portrayals, asks what they mean in the age of Walmart and Netflix, and looks at how Ozarkers have shaped meaning for their communities and the nation over time. The discussion considers how the hillbilly image emerged, the role of folklorists and storytellers in defining it, and what it means to be an Ozarker in the 21st century. Phillips is a writer and farmer with deep roots in the Arkansas hill country. He and his wife work a farm above the Muddy Fork of the Illinois River using draft horses. As a historian, he teaches Ozark and rural history and is the author of Hipbillies: Deep Revolution in the Arkansas Ozarks. He is finishing Harvesting Hope: How Organic Farming Tried to Save the Ozarks, a history of the Ozark Organic Growers Association and the development of the USDA Organic program. His writing has also appeared in Gravy, Farming Magazine, Front Porch Republic, and Skipjack Review.

The Bowling Baddie Throwdown Women’s Singles

This women’s singles tournament welcomes female bowlers ages 16 and up. Competition is on a modified house shot with a handicap of 70 percent of 210, capped at 28 pins per game. The format features seven qualifying games with at least one in six participants cashing, then a cut to finalists for a round robin where every finalist bowls one game against each opponent. Each match win earns 30 bonus pins, and ties award 15 bonus pins to each player. The top qualifier receives a refund of the $200 entry fee because pinfall resets for the finals. The champion takes home a trophy and a guaranteed $3,000. Brackets and high game pots will be offered, along with raffles and giveaways. The highest league average from 2024 to 2025 will be used, averages will be verified, and players may be re-rated at any time. The 10 pin rule is in effect, meaning if a current league average is 10 pins higher than last season after 21 or more games, that must be disclosed. Deposits to reserve a spot can be made via Cash App at kateyf123 or Venmo at kmf123, and deposits are non-refundable. If the full entry fee is paid and the bowler later cannot attend, $150 will be returned. All payouts are issued the same day.

Reading and Book Signing

Author and psychiatrist Glenn Siegel presents a reading from Abducted by Lichen: An Interspecies Journey of Love, Healing and Wisdom, with a signing. His book blends essays, letters, and reflections to depict a relationship with lichen that models reciprocity, symbiosis, and quiet presence in contrast to the fractures of modern life. A key moment centers on a spiritual crisis at a desert monastery, where the steady presence of lichen helps him move through a difficult period. By recognizing lichen as a partnership of fungi and algae, he shows how interconnection can open paths to psychological and spiritual awakening. Siegel practiced psychiatry for more than three decades and later turned toward writing on wholeness and self-healing in closer conversation with the living world. He is also the author of the poetry collection Howling With Gratitude and Grief.

Presented by Buzzed Bards, Crowd Control Hamlet is a playful take on Shakespeare that supports Canopy NWA. Staged at The Medium in Springdale, Arkansas, the performance invites the audience to steer the action for a good cause. The cast first presents a straightforward version of a scene, then the crowd votes on how to shake it up. Choices can include swapping in outlandish props, trying a garbled translation, or attempting the moment blindfolded. Donations of any amount to the partner charity serve as votes, and the winning twist is applied as the actors run the scene again.
