Discovery: The Who, What, and Where of the Ozarks

Historian Jared Phillips from the University of Arkansas leads a thoughtful exploration of how the Ozarks has been portrayed by outsiders and understood by the people who live there. The conversation looks at why stereotypes such as hillbilly and moonshiner took hold, what those labels suggest in an era shaped by Walmart and Netflix, and how communities in the region have made sense of their place in the nation over time. Topics include the region’s geography, major historical currents from Indigenous beginnings through the rise of Walmart, and changes in the Ozarks’ population. Phillips is a writer and farmer with longstanding ties to the Arkansas hill country. He and his wife work a farm above the Muddy Fork of the Illinois River, using draft horses for their fieldwork. He teaches Ozark and rural history at the University of Arkansas, authored Hipbillies: Deep Revolution in the Arkansas Ozarks, and is completing Harvesting Hope: How Organic Farming Tried to Save the Ozarks, a history of the Ozark Organic Growers Association and the development of the USDA Organic program. His writing has appeared in Gravy, Farming Magazine, Front Porch Republic, Skipjack Review, and other publications.

What Your Asana Practice is Missing

Many yoga routines favor the same shapes hour after hour, whether on the mat or at a desk, which can leave important movement patterns underused. This workshop offers a reset by broadening how you move. Through three thoughtfully sequenced flows you will experience the contrast between flexion, extension, and balance, then take time to notice how each lands in your body and how your daily habits play a role. Expect clear guidance on posture and repetitive movement, along with an exploration of moving in more than one plane so you can recognize what typical classes may overlook. A simple daily reset, created by a Doctor of Physical Therapy, is included to support your practice at home. It is designed for yoga practitioners, active individuals, and anyone curious about how routine positions shape the body. Instruction is led by Ashtyn Madden, PT, DPT, a Doctor of Physical Therapy and 500 hour yoga teacher with training in yoga therapy, who brings a practical clinical perspective through Whole Health Physical Therapy. Hosted at Trailside Yoga. Cost is $20.

Flexing Down 49 Tour - Northshore

The Flexing Down 49 Tour brings a PDGA-sanctioned Flex Start C-Tier stop to Northshore Disc Golf Course, where a single rated round earns points toward the series and a chance to compete for major payouts at the finale. The official leaderboard and complete rules will be announced. All participants need to check in with the Tournament Director before teeing off. Cards are formed at check-in and course guidelines are covered. Beginning play without TD approval can result in disqualification without a refund. Registration is available online or on site, and early online signup qualifies players for Closest-To-The-Pin challenges. On-site payments are accepted by cash, card, or Venmo. The entry fee is $30, allocated as $17 to the event purse, $8 to fees, and $5 reserved for the Tour Finale payout. Players may also enter an optional $5 ace pot. Ace pot participants are eligible for a payout if they record a hole-in-one during competition. If no aces are made, the pot rolls to the next Arkansas Flex Start event. If multiple aces are hit, the pot is split evenly among those players. Payouts are funded by $17 from each entry and awarded to the top 45 percent of each division based on the PDGA payout scale. Pro divisions are paid in cash or digitally. Amateur divisions receive merchandise credit redeemable with the on-site Disc Golf Dojo pro shop. Results and payouts will be posted to Disc Golf Scene once all rounds are complete. Credit may be used the same day or at a future Disc Golf Dojo event, and amateur credit expires two years from the award date. A concurrent Flex Start Doubles option is also offered, unsanctioned, with Pro and Am divisions. Register the team with a single entry and list both players under the name field. Doubles has a separate ace pot, scoring is kept in a UDisc event, and the top third of each division receives payout, with cash for pros and store credit for amateurs.

The Bowling Baddie Throwdown Women’s Singles

This women’s singles tournament welcomes female bowlers ages 16 and up. Competition is on a modified house shot with a handicap of 70 percent of 210, capped at 28 pins per game. The format features seven qualifying games with at least one in six participants cashing, then a cut to finalists for a round robin where every finalist bowls one game against each opponent. Each match win earns 30 bonus pins, and ties award 15 bonus pins to each player. The top qualifier receives a refund of the $200 entry fee because pinfall resets for the finals. The champion takes home a trophy and a guaranteed $3,000. Brackets and high game pots will be offered, along with raffles and giveaways. The highest league average from 2024 to 2025 will be used, averages will be verified, and players may be re-rated at any time. The 10 pin rule is in effect, meaning if a current league average is 10 pins higher than last season after 21 or more games, that must be disclosed. Deposits to reserve a spot can be made via Cash App at kateyf123 or Venmo at kmf123, and deposits are non-refundable. If the full entry fee is paid and the bowler later cannot attend, $150 will be returned. All payouts are issued the same day.

Crowd Control Hamlet

Presented by Buzzed Bards, Crowd Control Hamlet is a playful take on Shakespeare that supports Canopy NWA. Staged at The Medium in Springdale, Arkansas, the performance invites the audience to steer the action for a good cause. The cast first presents a straightforward version of a scene, then the crowd votes on how to shake it up. Choices can include swapping in outlandish props, trying a garbled translation, or attempting the moment blindfolded. Donations of any amount to the partner charity serve as votes, and the winning twist is applied as the actors run the scene again. Fresh options follow, and the cycle continues until the tale concludes. This event is part of The Medium’s InnerSpace program, which offers free space to pilot new creative or community-building ideas in a supportive setting and reflects a commitment to accessible space.
