At Jacob’s Mission Community Center, ASA Now offers a monthly food distribution for kinship, foster, and adoptive families. The effort helps caregivers stretch their grocery budgets while creating a sense of safety and care for the children in their homes. For children who have faced food insecurity or trauma, reliable access to nourishing foods can help ease worries around eating and encourage healthier patterns. Caregivers eligible for support include those currently caring for children in foster care and those who have adopted children with prior involvement in the child welfare system. Each Mission Box includes perishable items such as bread, milk, meat, fresh produce, frozen foods, and baked goods, with contributions from Trader Joes, Safeway, Midwest Food Bank, and Panera Bread. Canning Series - Start Date

At Classic Cooking, this opening session starts a six week, hands on exploration of home canning for beginners and curious cooks, focusing on building confidence and learning core safety practices. Across the series, participants progress from using liquid and powdered pectins to long boil methods, while understanding the distinctions between jams, jellies, preserves, and marmalades. The recipe lineup features both sweet and savory options, including lemon ginger marmalade, smoky barbecue sauce, rich tomato pasta sauces, and a bright lemon caponata. Later classes emphasize a well stocked pantry and gift ready jars, with items such as a cranberry orange chutney suited to the holidays and a hot and sweet chili sauce that pairs well with seafood and dishes with Asian flavors. Each week centers on two proven recipes tied to that session’s goals and typically yields about six half pint jars per person, so everyone heads home with something they made in class. The series wraps up by celebrating vegetables with fresh salsas and relishes that are versatile for many meals, leaving participants with the skills and inspiration to keep canning.
