Dark Oxygen Performance

dArK oXyGen unfolds as a sound-centered dance that traces the pathways of breath and reflects on recent findings about oxygen forming in the deep ocean without sunlight or photosynthesis. Drawing on ocean cosmologies from the Global South, it interweaves mayfield brooks’s roots as a Black gospel child singer with movement practices where breath drives both body and voice. The piece treats darkness as a place of creation, while confronting the extractive forces that distance people from their inner depths and echo in the technologies that exploit deep sea ecosystems.

A Trip to South America

This concert spotlights the foundations of Latin jazz through the vibrant traditions of Afro-Cuban and Afro-Brazilian styles, two subgenres that were especially popular in the 1960s and 1970s. The program features tightly syncopated grooves shaped by Latin and African influences, delivered with the straight eighth feel that sets Latin jazz apart from swing. Percussionist and vocalist Miguel “Mambo” DeLeon leads the music, known in the Midwest salsa and Latin jazz community as The Pioneer, El Pionero, since the mid-1980s. His background includes many opening appearances for well known Latin jazz groups, including Santana. The performance takes place in Crystal Hall.
