In this production of Waiting for Godot, the ease of seeing what others should do collides with the uncertainty people feel in their own predicaments, when they fall silent or simply wait for change. The play holds up a mirror to that impulse and asks where action ends and inaction begins. Counted among the great works of theatre, it was written by Samuel Beckett, who received the Nobel Prize yet kept his distance from the fame that followed. He did not attend the ceremony in Stockholm, and his wife described the award as a catastrophe. True to its author’s reserve, this is not a show that clamors for attention, yet its challenge is direct and personal.
