Free Kids Activities at the Farmers' Market - POP Club 🌱
The POP Club at the Downtown San Leandro Farmers' Market offers free, hands-on activities that help children discover where food originates, how it is cultivated, and the benefits of choosing fresh, locally grown ingredients. Each week introduces a new theme, from exploring the colorful variety and nutrients of fruits and vegetables and assembling a vibrant plate, to tracing how food travels from farms to the market. Participants can compare fresh and dried produce while learning about preservation methods, and they will explore practical ways to reduce food waste while appreciating the value of imperfect fruits and veggies. This program is designed for families with children 12 and younger, and a parent or guardian must supervise.
Tango dance classes with Anahí at La Bruja: beginning and intermediate
Anahí Carballo, visiting from Buenos Aires, brings expert Argentine tango instruction to Berkeley. A professor at the National University of the Arts and a seasoned teacher, choreographer, and director, she founded Estudio Tango Cuir and previously directed the historic all-female company Compañia Tango Entre Mujeres. Her credentials include a Provincial Malambo championship and a semifinal placement at the World Tango Championship, along with creating the shows Vinculadas and Otro modo and co-creating Nuestra historia. These sessions offer a beginning class and an intermediate class, with an emphasis on social-dance figures and clear, responsive communication between partners. The beginner class welcomes those with no prior experience. The intermediate class is designed for dancers who have taken about a dozen tango classes, and beginners are welcome to observe that session. Practice time is included with the classes. All levels share an initial practica, and there is additional practice after the intermediate class for dancing, refinement, and questions. Instruction uses the language of leaders and followers and is intentionally inclusive of queer, trans, and non-binary dancers. Everyone is encouraged to explore both roles. All sessions are planned for the ballroom, although the room may change. Pricing is $25 for a single class at the general rate, $15 for students with ID for a single class, or $40 for one person to take both classes in the same evening. Karaoke Night
Frank’s Sports Bar hosts a lively karaoke night with a live DJ providing tracks and keeping the energy high. Karaoke runs throughout the evening, with drinks available and a friendly, upbeat atmosphere. Whether you are a confident performer or trying the mic for the first time, participants can sing solo or team up with friends for a fun, low-pressure night out.
FloLab - $300 Weekly Rap Contest and Cypher
At Club Cali, FloLab holds space for real Hip Hop in the Bay by resisting the forces that have watered down and priced out the culture. Artists, writers, listeners, and neighbors come together for a $300 rap writing contest with cypher and open mic energy, all built around substance, style, and truth. You do not need to rap to take part, and listeners are welcome to soak in a room where MCs sharpen their craft, the crowd’s voice matters, and the culture stays with the people. Contest guidelines include following @HipHopForTheFutureSPC on Instagram and checking posts for the current topic and beats. Participants can register in advance to reserve a spot and are encouraged to read all rules online. Write one verse per beat, with hooks or choruses allowed, and memorizing verses can help your performance. Win over the room to win the money. The prize pool totals $300, awarded as $150 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third. People come for authentic Hip Hop culture, a growing Bay Area community, weekly topics that reflect real life, and a space where MCs can build, test, sharpen, and perform in front of an engaged crowd. Organizers are also working toward expansion into San Francisco and San Jose.
