Beginner Swing Classes with Mercedes Moore
Instructor Mercedes Moore leads beginner-friendly swing lessons that focus on the essentials of 6-count Lindy, also known as East Coast Swing. Each session begins with a refresher on core steps and then builds into new combinations. No partner or prior dance experience is required, and partners rotate to encourage social dancing and connection. Mercedes has been active in swing since the mid-1990s and became involved with a vibrant Houston scene in 1999. She went on to teach and perform with a team dedicated to community outreach through demonstrations and competitions. Her teaching centers on connection, the element that makes partner dancing engaging and enjoyable. Classes take place in Studio 4 at the CCAE Studios, not in the Concert Hall or Center Theater. The most reliable entry is from the Center’s main parking lot near the James A. Stone swimming pool, then across the footbridge that links to Grape Day Park. Enter through the green gate. The studio buildings will be on the right, numbered from 4 down to 1, and Studio 4 is the first door on the right. Pricing is $20 per class, with an option to purchase four classes for $60.
