Before Route 66: Early Road Travel and the Birth of Highway Signage
Presented by The Gamble House and Pasadena Museum of History, this program explores the uncertainty and adventure of early road travel before Route 66, when cars were new and standardized signs were rare. Morgan Yates, Corporate Archivist and Historian for the Automobile Club of Southern California, will deliver an illustrated talk on the Club’s work from 1914 to 1915 to post signs along the National Old Trails Road, a precursor to Route 66. Across the program they devote 15 hours to hands-on learning that grows creativity, confidence, and a sense of community. Side Street Projects aims to equip artists of all ages with the support to sustain their creative practice, focusing on community-centered artists through community-led programming that nurtures creativity, well-being, and collective growth.
