Free Kids Activities at the Farmers' Market - POP Club 🌱
At the Downtown San Leandro Farmers' Market, the POP Club offers free, hands-on activities that help children learn where their food comes from, how it is grown, and why choosing fresh, local options matters. Each week brings a new focus, from celebrating the vibrant colors of fruits and vegetables and creating a colorful plate, to tracing food’s journey from farm to market, tasting seasonal produce while comparing fresh and dried varieties, and practicing ways to cut food waste by appreciating imperfect produce. Families with children 12 and under are welcome, and a parent or guardian must be present.
Tango dance classes with Anahí at La Bruja: beginning and intermediate
Visiting from Buenos Aires, Anahí leads beginning and intermediate tango classes in Berkeley. Her sessions are lively and rigorous, drawing on her experience as a professor at the National University of the Arts and her extensive understanding of tango dance and culture. Instruction centers on social dance figures and clear communication between partners. The classes use the terms leaders and followers and are welcoming to queer, trans, and non-binary dancers, with encouragement for everyone to explore both roles. The format includes a beginner lesson with no prior experience required, a shared practica where both levels dance together, an intermediate lesson designed for those with at least three months of dancing or about twelve classes, and a final practica. Practice time is included with class admission and offers space to dance, ask questions, and get feedback. Beginners are welcome to observe the intermediate class. Classes are planned for the ballroom, although the room assignment may change. Pricing is $25 general for a single class, $15 for students with ID for a single class, or $40 to take both classes in one visit for one person. Payment is accepted in cash or via Venmo upon arrival. Anahí Carballo is an Argentine Tango and Folklore master teacher, choreographer, and director with more than two decades of international experience. She founded Estudio Tango Cuir, led the all-female company Compañía Tango Entre Mujeres for ten years, and is a current professor at the National University of the Arts. Her accolades include a provincial Malambo championship and a semifinalist placement at the World Tango Championship. She created the shows Vinculadas and Otro modo and co-created Nuestra historia. FloLab - $300 Weekly Rap Contest and Cypher
FloLab pushes back against the gentrification of Hip Hop in the Bay Area by offering a weekly home for the culture where MCs sharpen their pens, the crowd has a voice, and the people keep the spirit alive. Each week, artists, writers, listeners, and the wider community gather for a $300 rap writing contest, cypher energy, and a room built around substance, style, and truth. Spectators are welcome, so there is no need to rap to be part of the vibe. Prizes total $300, with $150 for first place, $100 for second, and $50 for third, and crowd response decides who wins. Contestants can prepare by following @HipHopForTheFutureSPC on Instagram and checking posts for the current topic and beats. Register in advance to reserve a spot and review the full rules and regulations. Write one verse for each beat, hooks and choruses are allowed, and memorizing verses strengthens your chances. Arriving early helps secure a place. Weekly topics speak to real life in the Bay, creating space for MCs to build, test, sharpen, and perform in front of a crowd that truly cares. Known for a sound grounded in purity and uplift, the group broke through with the signature single In A Dis Ya Time more than three decades ago and has stayed true to the approach that first defined them. Their second album, Give Me Power, reached number one on the CMJ reggae charts in 1980, and Rasta Philosophy, the final release featuring all original members, received a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album. The band has toured across Europe, Canada, and the United States, and a new album titled Let Them Talk is planned for release later this year. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the show. Students can purchase $20 tickets at the door with a valid student ID. Ashkenaz welcomes all ages, and children 12 and under are admitted free unless otherwise noted.

Hands-On Fix-a-Flat Workshop
Learn the essentials of diagnosing and repairing a flat tire in an interactive, hands-on workshop led by Bike East Bay. The session covers removing and replacing or patching an inner tube and shares practical tips to reduce the chance of future flats. Participants may bring a wheel with a flat to practice on, or use a demo wheel provided in class. Beginners are welcome, and no prior repair experience is required. Because of limited time and added mechanical complexity, removing wheels with hub motors or internal gear hubs will not be covered, so attendees with those systems should plan to practice on demo equipment. This workshop is funded by the City of Hayward’s Active Transportation Education and Promotion Program, supported by California Climate Investments.

An hour of group mat Pilates with props led by Keri at Spire Church focuses on mobility, stability, strengthening and release work. All levels and all bodies are welcome, with personalized modifications or extra challenges offered as needed. Props are used to support or intensify the work depending on the goal, building proprioception, encouraging closed chain movements and adding controlled instability to recruit deep stabilizing muscles rather than just the big movers. The aim is to help participants understand their bodies, deepen their movement practice, identify imbalances and retrain patterns for more efficient, mobile movement. Keri is a comprehensively trained Balanced Body instructor with experience across mat, springboard, chair, arc, reformer and foot and gait and motor sensory training, and she continues advanced study under the mentorship of Nancy Myers. Wear tennis shoes and comfortable workout clothes or any attire that allows easy movement, and consider bringing a hat and sunblock. Activities take place outdoors in an unshaded section of the park, with nearby trees available for shade if needed. Relive themes from Dumas’s tale as the crew shares local history and literary connections while the voyage takes in classic bay views. Typical sights can include the city waterfront, Alcatraz and its echoes of Château d’If, Angel Island and the Golden Gate Bridge, with possibilities that range to Tiburon and Sausalito or a scenic pass by Aquatic Park and the Palace of Fine Arts before sweeping past Alcatraz again. Captains tailor each outing to guest preferences, whether seeking warm sunshine east of Angel Island or a livelier run through the slot for brisk ocean breeze and sea spray. The route depends on wind, tides, currents and fog, so no specific course is guaranteed. A Mediterranean buffet is served in Gas Light’s cozy cabin, with unlimited non-alcoholic beverages included. Menu highlights include chicken shawarma and steak shawarma, falafel, turmeric rice, pita, hummus, wild arugula, tomato cucumber mix, quinoa tabbouleh, sumac cauliflower, garbanzo beans and tahini sauce. Alcoholic beverages are available for purchase at a cashless bar offering beer, wine and cocktails, typically priced between $7 and $14. Payment methods include Visa, MasterCard, American Express, PayPal and Venmo. Outside alcohol is not permitted, and bar service runs during the cruise with last call before returning to the dock. Bay weather can feel cool, so dress in layers such as long pants, long sleeves, a sweatshirt and a jacket. Sunscreen, a hat and flat shoes are recommended, athletic footwear is ideal and stilettos are discouraged. Consider seasickness remedies if needed. Period attire is welcome. Late Regency to early Romantic era looks from 1815 to the 1830s suit the theme, from bold gigot sleeves to fanciful hairstyles. For comfort and safety on deck, avoid large hoop skirts, choose smaller corded petticoats, secure hats and hair ornaments and bring a shawl or cloak for extra warmth.
