Nat Bolden and the State of Mind Band

Nat Bolden and The State of Mind Band bring the storied sound of Oakland blues to the stage, led by a performer whose roots trace to Pine Bluff and the 7th Street entertainment district. After relocating to California in 1950, Bolden worked as a welder and businessman, became part of the Bay Area blues scene, and later took ownership of the Til Two Lounge on 66th Street as the old district declined during urban renewal. Known for playful humor, a smooth voice, and polished moves, he has entertained audiences of all ages across the Bay Area and beyond. Now 96, he stands among the few remaining musicians from the influential Oakland blues era of the 1950s and 60s, sharing decades of history through his music. Expect the distinctive Oakland flavor that has resonated for years in Northern California nightclubs and festivals. Advance reservations are encouraged, and entertainment tickets are required, with purchase available in person or online.

Oil Painting with Marilyn Eger - July Session 2

Instructor Marilyn Eger leads an oil painting workshop that serves as the second part of a two session series. Participants create a painting from a personal photograph while receiving individualized guidance in composition, color theory, and color mixing. Prepare by toning your canvas with a warm color in advance so it is dry before class begins. Bring two prints of your chosen image, one in black and white and one in color, each the same size as your canvas, and the image will be transferred to the canvas using carbon paper. The subject is entirely your choice. Open to high school students and adults, this small group of about six to nine painters welcomes every experience level. Payment is required in advance, with refunds available only when at least one week of notice is given. Members pay 100 dollars for both sessions and non members pay 145 dollars for both sessions. If you plan to use the instructor’s materials, add 25 dollars to the fee and still bring a pre toned canvas. To register, submit payment by PayPal or Venmo, then text Marilyn at 209.327.8518 to confirm. Questions can be directed to Marilyn at 209.327.8518 or to the Lodi Community Art Center at 209.333.3855. Please bring oil colors such as Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Red Light, Cadmium Yellow, Naples Yellow, Thalo Blue, Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Viridian Green, and Yellow Ochre. Required colors include Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Sienna, Naples Yellow, Thalo Blue, Titanium White, and Ultramarine Blue. Filbert brushes in sizes 1, 2, 3, and 6 are suggested, the instructor uses Utrecht Series 209, and Utrecht 239 B Mixed Synthetic size 4 is helpful for softening edges, though you may bring the filberts you already own. Choose a canvas size that suits your image. Also pack Liquin Original, turpenoid with a metal cup, rags or paper towels, a large palette, and a French easel or your own setup. If you prefer to sit, easels are available at the art center.

The Evolution of the Flamingo’s Smile

Christopher Torres, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of the Pacific, presents a talk on how the flamingo’s distinctive smile and beak evolved, why these birds became so highly specialized, and how their history intersects with broader changes in Earth’s past. He will trace the puzzles that still surround flamingo origins and fossils, then explain how recent work clarified that grebes are their closest living relatives after centuries of uncertainty. The presentation explores what came before flamingos and grebes despite a remarkably complete fossil from that pivotal moment, the rise and disappearance of unusual straight beaked flamingos that once ranged nearly worldwide, and how the ancestors of today’s curved beak species nearly vanished before spreading again across the globe. It also looks at a time when flamingos filled habitats along California and the West Coast only tens of thousands of years ago, and highlights the remarkable changes in beak form that chicks undergo after hatching, a window into the earliest stages of flamingo life. This event takes place at Central United Methodist Church.
