La Plata County Fairgrounds - Exhibit HallFamily Concert: The Harmony Games!
San Juan Symphony presents a family concert that connects music with mathematics through The Harmony Games, a 2018 work by composer Yaniv Segal. The tale follows the beginnings of an orchestra in a distant place as four musical families learn to play together, brought to life by narrator Drea Pressley, conductor Thomas Heuser, and a chamber orchestra at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. Young listeners discover ideas such as counting, meter, phrasing, pulse, harmony, polyphony, and chromatics, and the audience takes part by tackling brief math prompts and sharing a few laughs. The program is designed for all ages and offers a welcoming introduction to the instrument families. An instrument petting zoo is available in the lobby before the performance, with San Juan Symphony musicians guiding hands-on exploration of the orchestra’s instruments. Tickets are $5. Support is provided by the Zimmer Community Fund, the City of Farmington, and the City of Durango Lodger’s Tax Arts and Culture Grant program.
