The 22nd annual Cortez Rendezvous Balloon Rally brings its signature evening glow to Parque de Vida in Cortez, filling the park and sky with illuminated hot air balloons. Hosted by the Cortez Retail Enhancement Association and the City of Cortez Parks and Recreation Department, this weather-dependent celebration highlights the beauty of ballooning and the spirit of community. This year also debuts Summer Send-Off, which blends the long-loved rally with an expanded evening of music, culture, and end-of-summer fun. Festivities feature a special reading of the Cortez 140 Proclamation, performances by local groups, community interviews, and live entertainment. Cultural and historical exhibitors will be on site, along with a limited selection of food and beverage vendors. Tethered balloon rides in the south field are offered free on a first-come, first-served basis with a $5 per person donation to the local nonprofit Our Own Lives. For safety, riders must be at least 7 years old and will need to sign a waiver. Additional restrictions may apply at the event. Attendees can watch balloons being prepared for the glow, meet ground crews, talk with pilots, and see the inflation process up close. Collectible balloon cards add to the fun, and remote control model balloons provide a fascinating look at scaled aerostats. As twilight settles in, the park comes alive with a radiant balloon glow, followed by a 15 minute drone show honoring the Cortez 140, Colorado 150, and USA 250 anniversaries. This daylong program with Rachel Turiel and Alison Cohen explores how Buddhist wisdom and Nonviolent Communication come together to support both inner clarity and compassionate connection. Participants will turn toward their immediate feelings and needs, gently questioning the idea of a fixed identity and practicing ways to meet experience as fluid and alive. From there, the focus shifts outward to relationships, strengthening the ability to listen for what matters to another person, remain present during difficulty, take responsibility for impact without sinking into shame, and treat challenging conversations as openings for learning and care. The schedule blends teachings, guided meditation, reflection and writing, small group dialogue, and time for questions and responses. No prior experience with meditation or NVC is required, and all are welcome. Offered at the Durango Dharma Center, the event follows a gift-economy model with a two-part sliding scale. A contribution made at registration supports the center’s operating costs, with options of $50, $70, $89, or $108, and scholarship options of $25 or $0. In the spirit of dana, teachers offer the day freely and are not paid through fees, and participants may choose to make a separate donation for the teachers in any amount. Generosity is entirely optional.

A multi-day backpacking outing in the Weminuche Wilderness accesses Chicago Basin by train with a drop-off at Needleton, followed by a hike into the basin to establish a base camp. The middle days focus on day hikes and exploration, with the possibility of attempting a 14er if conditions allow. Options in the area include Twin Lakes, Columbine Pass, and other nearby trails. The final segment is a hike back to the tracks to meet the return train to Durango. The round-trip train fare, including a backpack fee, is $143, and parking is $10 per day. Plan ahead and prepare by reviewing regulations and area-specific guidance for Chicago Basin and the Weminuche Wilderness. Bring a water filter, as water sources are plentiful, and use proper food storage such as a hangable bear sack or a bear canister. Each person is responsible for their own transportation, navigation, water, food, and safety.

Durango High SchoolFollowing your Passion: A Woman’s Fly-fishing Journey
In the CSWS Lyceum, Room 120, librarian and lifelong angler Shelley Walchak shares the next chapter of her fly-fishing story. In 2012 she stepped away from the Colorado State Library to pursue a personal quest to fish one river each week for a year, a journey that spanned seven Rocky Mountain states and 52 rivers and culminated in her 2014 book, 52 RIVERS. More than a decade later, she returns with an epilogue that explores pursuing dreams, welcoming uncertainty, and discovering joy along the way. Walchak retired after four decades in librarianship, including service as director of the Pine River Library District in Bayfield, Colorado and as a senior consultant with the Colorado State Library in Denver. She currently serves as board secretary of Maria’s Literary Foundation and as board president of the Southwest Colorado Humanities Roundtable History Live! event series, and she continues to travel and fish whenever possible. Admission is free and open to all.

National Outdoor Book Award winner Scott Graham presents an inside look at a decade of crafting his National Park Mystery Series, published by Torrey House Press, a nonprofit dedicated to environmental and social justice. The talk explores the newest tenth installment, Great Sand Dunes Massacre, set in southern Colorado’s San Luis Valley, and revisits book nine, Death Valley Duel, a finalist for the 2025 Colorado Book Award that features a villainous ultra-trail race across the Mojave Desert inspired in part by Silverton’s Hardrock 100. Based in Durango, Graham is an avid outdoorsman and advocate for public lands. He is also the author of five nonfiction books, including Extreme Kids, and has worked as a newspaper reporter, magazine editor, radio disk jockey, and coal-shoveling fireman on the steam-powered Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. This free, open-to-all program will be held in the CSWS Lyceum, Room 120, at the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College and is a featured event of the 2026 Southwest Colorado Humanities Roundtable History Live!

After a full day of art, music, and community at the Silverton Creates Art Festival, the evening brings a free outdoor concert under the stars at Memorial Park. Set a short walk from downtown Silverton and surrounded by peak fall color and cool mountain air at 9,318 feet, it offers one more night of live music to close out summer. ATOMGA leads the bill, a nine member Denver afrobeat collective that blends the style’s roots with rock, jazz, hip hop, reggae, and funk. Interlocking, multilayered rhythms fuel the groove, a bold horn section amplifies the sound, and vocalist CalySol delivers expressive words and melody for a tightly honed, high energy performance that keeps the dance floor moving from start to finish. Food vendors will be on site, and local wine, cider, and brews will be available. The concert takes place rain or shine, so dress for the weather. Picnic blankets and camp chairs are welcome. No dogs or outside alcohol. Memorial Park is a smoke, vape, and drug free zone.

Enjoy a free, open-to-all presentation in the CSWS Lyceum, Room 120, featuring Diné/Navajo artist Darby Raymond-Overstreet. She will share how historic weaving informs her digital practice, honoring the resilience of her ancestors and the homelands central to her work. The talk explores themes of identity and belonging, and the intertwined relationship among land, art, and people. A featured artist in the Center of Southwest Studies exhibition Constellations of Place, Darby works in digital collage and printmaking to create portraits, landscapes, and abstract forms inspired by traditional Diné textiles, with a special focus on works from the late 1800s through the 1950s. Born in Tuba City and raised in Flagstaff, she is an award-winning artist whose work has appeared in publications, art markets, and exhibitions including Horizons: Weaving Between the Lines with Dine Textiles at the Museum of Indian arts and Crafts in Santa Fe, The Force is With Our People at the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, and The Return of the Force at the Center of Southwest Studies. She holds bachelor’s degrees in Psychology and Studio Art with honors from Dartmouth College and resides in Chimayó, New Mexico. Constellations of Place is supported by the Belonging Colorado initiative of The Denver Foundation and the Greater Good Science Center, in partnership with the America 250-Colorado 150 Southwest regional Power of Place initiative.

Presentation & Film Screening: Weaving a Partnership
The Center of Southwest Studies will host a presentation and documentary screening in the CSWS Lyceum, Room 120, spotlighting the Cedar Mesa Perishables Project. Since 2011, this collaborative effort has worked with Pueblo fiber artists to document around 4,000 ancient textiles, basketry, wooden implements, and other organic cultural items recovered from dry caves in the greater Cedar Mesa region of southeastern Utah. Anthropologist, textile consultant, and project director Dr. Laurie Webster, together with Zuni fiber artist and project team member Christopher Lewis, a member of the Badger Clan and a child of the Corn Clan, will share the story of this partnership and how it has advanced archaeological understanding of ancestral Pueblo perishable technologies while supporting the preservation and renewal of Pueblo fiber arts. The program also features a screening of Languages of the Landscape: The Cedar Mesa Perishables Project, a 30-minute documentary produced by Cloudy Ridge Productions. This event is free and open to all, and it is presented as part of the Southwest Colorado Humanities Roundtable History Live!

Hosted by The ASH Foundation and sponsored by Rider Justice, this family-friendly ride welcomes everyone, whether arriving on a motorcycle or in a car. The route departs from Durango Harley-Davidson with a police escort and heads to Bar D Chuckwagon Ranch. At the destination, participants can enjoy a chili lunch, a silent auction, prize drawings, a bar, a DJ, and photos with Santa, along with additional festivities. Entry is $15 or a new toy valued at $15 or more. Every contribution helps The ASH Foundation support organizations throughout the Four Corners region, including Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, Boys and Girls Club of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, Big Brothers Big Sisters of SW Colorado, Mercy Health Foundation Pediatric Oncology Unit, Women’s Resource Center of Durango, and Volunteers of America Durango. Members of the Herstory Printmaking Collective present an artist talk in the CSWS Lyceum, Room 120, highlighting their collaborative practice of creating portrait murals that honor women who have shaped how we understand the world. Based in Albuquerque, the group works with an approachable relief printmaking process to produce bold newsprint images for wheat pasting, and has shared this work through workshops, live demonstrations, and installations around the Southwest at places such as the Santa Fe Railyard, the Beehive Building in Mancos, the University of New Mexico’s Masley Art Gallery, the Southwest Printmaking Fiesta in Silver City, and the mobile Axle Contemporary Gallery. The talk introduces the idea of herstory, a feminist perspective on history that centers women’s experiences. Admission is free and open to all. The Center of Southwest Studies is also partnering with the collective on a printmaking workshop for Fort Lewis College Art & Design students inspired by women represented in the Center’s archives and museum collections, with resulting portraits to be installed for an ongoing exhibition celebrating women of the Southwest.
