Canine Good Citizen Class

Help your dog build real-world manners with a four-week Canine Good Citizen class. Based on the American Kennel Club CGC program, training focuses on polite behavior at home and in the community, leading to the official 10-step CGC evaluation. Dogs that pass the test are eligible for a certificate and may earn the AKC CGC title. The test will be administered at the end of the course. Tuition for the four-week series is $150.

Summer Solstice Window Viewing & Sunrise Cyanotypes

At the CSWS Gallery & Courtyard, this annual celebration of the summer solstice is free and open to all. Baked goods are provided by @sweet_n_cakey25, and parking on campus is free during the summer. As the sun rises on the solstice, a spiral of sunlight from the Center’s solstice window traces a path across the gallery walls. Installed in the upper northeast corner of the exhibition gallery by Denver artist Scott Parsons through Colorado’s Art in Public Places Program, the window integrates with the building’s architecture as a tribute to the solstice markers of the Ancestral Puebloans of Southwest Colorado. The spiral can be seen for several weeks around the solstice and is sharpest on solstice morning. Moving with the rotation of the Earth, the light journeys across the wall and fades as the sun climbs higher. After the viewing, a hands-on cyanotype activity takes place in the Center’s courtyard. All supplies are provided, and participants are encouraged to bring small objects or knickknacks to personalize their prints. The spiral holds deep significance in Puebloan culture, reflecting an understanding of astronomy, seasonal cycles, and the interconnectedness of all things. During solstices and equinoxes, sunlight interacted with spiral markers to indicate the time of year, guiding planting, harvesting, and important communal and religious activities. These alignments reflect a spiritual connection to the cosmos, with the sun’s cycles symbolizing renewal and the balance between earth and sky.

Designed for dogs 5 months and older, this five-week training class builds core, real-world skills while helping dogs get comfortable in unfamiliar places, around new people, and near other dogs. This introductory workshop on Jungian dreamwork at The Durango Collective explores Carl Jung’s view of dreams as meaningful messages from the unconscious that can illuminate emotions, relationships, patterns, and inner life. After the Town of Bayfield festivities, the celebration continues at historic LePlatt's Pond on L-J Ranch, marking America’s 250th birthday and Colorado’s 150th anniversary with an easygoing afternoon by the water. Guests can relax with family and friends, enjoy live music from Starry Starry Night featuring Lisa Blue and Derek Smith, and cast a line in a recently stocked pond. Fishing is included, and several tagged trophy trout have been added with support from Rainbow Springs Trout Farm, offering a special prize to anyone who catches one. Hawaii Street Food, visiting from Grand Junction, will be serving favorites, and Sammies Sodas will pour handcrafted specialty sodas and other refreshing drinks. Admission is $20 for adults, with free entry for ages 17 and under. Silent Sundays: Tribute to Buster Keaton

Settle in for a silent film showcase celebrating Buster Keaton, brought to life with live accompaniment from professional pianist Adam Swanson. He will perform authentic period music on the DAC 9-foot grand piano throughout the program. The lineup includes Sherlock Jr. (Joseph M. Schenck Productions, 1924), in which a movie projectionist dreams of detective work, then must clear his name after being framed for stealing his girlfriend’s father’s pocket watch. Joe Keaton appears as the father and Kathryn McGuire plays the girlfriend, and the film features a pioneering dream sequence that turns the story into a film within a film. The program also features The Boat (Joseph M. Schenck Productions, 1921), a beloved short where Keaton launches a homemade vessel called the Damfino and comic chaos follows when he takes his family out on the water. Animal Soul takes the stage with original songs that blend the grit of classic rock with the charm and polish of modern indie pop. This alternative rock group from Durango, Colorado moves easily across styles, threading americana, glam, power pop, and soul into a sound that feels uniquely their own. Live, they lean into inventiveness and eccentric flair, serving a high energy mix of fresh sonic ideas. The project began in 2012 when founder Anthony Braun first performed in New York City under the Animal Soul name. The current lineup, which started coming together in Durango in 2024, brings that vision into sharp focus with lead singer and keyboardist Abi Nicholas’s lively vocals and songwriting, lead guitarist Alex Read’s keen harmonic sense, bassist Guy Ewing’s melodic foundation, Ian Boletchek shifting from delicate to fierce on keys and sax, and Drew Greene powering the groove on drums, all tied together by Braun’s distinctive writing, arrangement, and production.

Deadly Fun Learning: Mysteries that Champion Our National Parks

National Outdoor Book Award winner Scott Graham presents an inside look at a decade of crafting his National Park Mystery Series, published by Torrey House Press, a nonprofit dedicated to environmental and social justice. The talk explores the newest tenth installment, Great Sand Dunes Massacre, set in southern Colorado’s San Luis Valley, and revisits book nine, Death Valley Duel, a finalist for the 2025 Colorado Book Award that features a villainous ultra-trail race across the Mojave Desert inspired in part by Silverton’s Hardrock 100. Based in Durango, Graham is an avid outdoorsman and advocate for public lands. He is also the author of five nonfiction books, including Extreme Kids, and has worked as a newspaper reporter, magazine editor, radio disk jockey, and coal-shoveling fireman on the steam-powered Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. This free, open-to-all program will be held in the CSWS Lyceum, Room 120, at the Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College and is a featured event of the 2026 Southwest Colorado Humanities Roundtable History Live!
