Known for bridging vintage swing and jazz with their punk and ska origins, the band crafts elegant arrangements from the Great American Songbook, drawing on icons like Cole Porter and Frank Sinatra. In recent years they have created seated, era-focused shows that celebrate different chapters of swing, from a 1920s and Cotton Club inspired program to a Rat Pack style tribute and a World War II holiday set that nods to Tiki flavors and Benny Goodman while echoing the feel of a 1940s radio broadcast. Alongside these productions, they write original material rooted in American popular music. Their 1997 release Zoot Suit Riot became a defining moment of the neo swing wave. They also completed a 14 song recording titled Bigger Life, designed to reconnect with their punk and ska audience, with intentions to occasionally spotlight high energy ska punk sets at select tours and festivals.

Ratboys take the stage at Aggie Theatre, presenting the Chicago four-piece’s vivid blend of twang, bright hooks, and candid storytelling. Created with co-producer Chris Walla, the album began at a quiet cabin in Wisconsin, then continued at Steve Albini’s Electrical Audio in Chicago and later at Rosebud Studio in Evanston. It moves from buoyant power pop on “Anywhere” to post-country textures on “Penny in the Lake,” pauses for tender moments like “Just Want You to Know the Truth,” and blasts into the expansive “Light Night Mountains All That.” Written after Steiner began therapy, the collection travels from reaching into silence to a calm resolution, folding in honesty, humor, and a touch of chaos along the way.
