In honor of PRIDE Month, History Fort Lauderdale presents Coming Out of the Shadows, a free photo exhibition at Galleria Fort Lauderdale. Through photographs and ephemera, it explores the charged political atmosphere in Fort Lauderdale during the 1960s, before the Stonewall era. Created in collaboration with Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library and Florida International University, the exhibition is curated by Fred Fejes, professor emeritus of multimedia studies at Florida Atlantic University, and Julio Capo, Jr., an author and associate professor of history at Florida International University. Visitors can also learn about this year’s Take PRIDE! honorees who have made meaningful contributions to the South Florida community. The exhibition is located near H & M and is open to the public during mall hours. The Bango Bango’s bring a fast-paced salute to Women in Rock to Galuppi’s, showcasing decades of anthems performed by an all-woman cover band from South Florida. Led by powerhouse vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Astrid Voxx, the show honors their namesake inspirations The Go-Go’s and The Bangles while stretching far beyond. The set features fiery takes on hits tied to Tina Turner, Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks, Heart, Blondie, Pat Benatar, and Joan Jett, alongside 90s and 2000s favorites from Alanis Morissette, The Cranberries, 4 Non Blondes, Republica, and Paramore. They also put a distinctive spin on songs by Elle King, Adele, Evanescence, and more. With tight musicianship, big vocals, and an energetic stage presence, this tribute to trailblazing artists blends nostalgia with a fresh edge. Admission is free.
